The Minneapolis Star Tribune has an interesting story about the new field turf being installed at TCF Stadium -- the home of the University of Minnesota and, for the past two years, the Minnesota Vikings who will now move to their new stadium this fall. Rather than have all of the football markings etched into the playing surface, the hashmarks and other lines will be painted on for Gopher football games. This "minimalist" approach also omits the traditional wide stripe that outlines the Gopher football field, substituting a narrow line which surrounds the playing surface which can be easily painted over so there is less visual "interference" with the wider soccer field. The endzone lettering and the center "M" will be permanent, but the transition to soccer and other uses should be much easier. The article mentions that they are talking with Minnesota United. http://www.startribune.com/tcf-bank...-specific-no-football-markings-yet/377999721/ I think we effectively have our answer -- the signs point to Minnesota United playing at TCF Bank stadium. I'd bet in 2017.
its only a done deal when MLS, led by don garber, announce the awarding of a franchise- and that wont happen until the SSS issue is signed, sealed and delivered- lets all hope that is very, very soon- all this drama for a 3 letter word 'mistake'
I am under the impression he awarded the franchise last March and we are waiting for the year the franchise starts play. Minnesota United awarded MLS expansion team
FiftyFive. One all over it as usual... http://fiftyfive.one/2016/07/news-no-news-no-mls-announcement-minnesota-expected-star-game/
I find this part very interesting: "in 2017 it is all but assured that Minnesota United FC will enter Major League Soccer under a new name (likely Minnesota FC) and play at TCF Bank Stadium." If true, pretty crappy for Minnesota United fans that MLS let Atlanta create a new team and use the United name but won't let an established team use the name. All I know is their logo is one of the best in the world and I surely hope they don't have to change it. I have been planning on buying Minnesota United gear just because of how sweet their logo and colors are.
I will always root against Atlanta for stealing the name. I know I should be angry at MLS as well for allowing it, and in a way I am, but how do you get angry with a league? Atlanta can go to hell. I hope they always come in last and replace Chicago as the new league joke. I hope all the players get rug burn.
great- soccer thrives on hated rivalries- like the red bulls and NYCFC- adds lots of spice as long as the hate doesnt go over the top and get ugly and violent the first game should be a WOW!! book it at atlanta's new stadium and sell it out at + 70 000- hopefully the opening of the 2017 season
"Fate" seems a bit overdramatic, and unfortunately, Atlanta will be keeping "United" in their name...
"Minnesota and Atlanta likely would end up with new names as well, since MLS already has a D.C. United franchise." What? So the article is saying Atlanta United who has never played a game and just announced their name not long ago will likely be changing their name?
Ha ha. If DC United stepped in and made Atlanta change their name too after Atlanta's NFL owner was a jerk about Minnesota United keeping its name, I would laugh hysterically. Minnesota has done the absolute best job of branding of any team in the US and to lose even a part of it is a travesty. Their logo and jerseys are perfect.
Well to be fair, MNU could pretty much keep the same branding with a new name. It's not they had a "United" bird or anything. In fact, how many of their fans regularly refer to them as United instead of Loons?
I'm a US Bank Stadium hater, but that is a much better final product than what Santa Clara got for much less cost. I'm still trying to figure out how Levi's cost $1.3B
