I wish Giroud wouldn't get that kind of reaction from the crowd. It's not his fault Deschamps overrates him.

Deschamps is terrible at his job. He should be extremely embarrassed

    Thank god for Griezmann

Anyway, regardless of the result, this was a bad performance from us.

I'm not even happy at being vindicated, I'm just happy for Griezmann regaining his confidence by scoring after being unfairly put on the bench and I'm happy we managed to win despite DD's gross incompetence.

I agree with you over the match but Giroud isn't so bad as described, for France he had scored 8 goals in the last 6 matches before this; today he missed few headers but they weren't easy and if, like today, the team doesn't play well the forward can't do anything.

I don't think that he's a bad player at all. I just think we have better players (at home and on the bench) and so it's frustrating for us. But like I said, none of that is his fault. I think there are a few people who overrate him, like Deschamps, and even more people who underrate him and think he's complete garbage. I think he's a good player, with many limitations, so I'm in the middle of that.

It's frustrating to see Griezmann, one of the best players in Europe right now, be placed on the wing to accommodate Giroud. I just don't understand why not play Griezmann where he is most effective.

I had to follow today's game on my work computer. The boys deserve credit for this win -- they dug deep and persevered. It was a true show of character. Past French teams would have thrown in the towel. A lot of these so-called lesser sides are making a habit of making life hard for the big boys. Eastern European nations are always tough. I never thought this game would be a walk in the park. Having to fight hard for wins in these first two matches may prove to be blessings in disguise when all is said and done. Breezing through the group stages of a major tournament can breed overconfidence and a false sense of security. This team will be ready for the battles which lie ahead. It sure is nice to be the first nation to qualify for the round of 16.

I'm glad Griezmann got on the scoresheet -- it will help his confidence moving forward. I expect Pogba to come good at some point. Gignac needs to start ahead of Giroud. I'm glad I will be able to see Sunday's match. Another goalfest against the Swiss would do very nicely. Allez les Bleus!

    Hi everyone,

I just signed up, so i'm writing my first post.

Regarding yours, I think that you're too harsh on him (I mean Giroud). I mean, he's not a wonderful player, but he's the only real striker of the team. Griezmann used to play as winger or secondary striker (even if this is less true for few months) and Coman/Martial are better near the touchlines because they can get past a lot of opponents thanks to their speed.

To me, Giroud is not good enough to win that kind of competition but he deserves to be on the pitch by now, we've no one to replace him at the moment. That's just my point of view.

Hey, Sawlo. Welcome to the forum! I've been on here for about twelve years. It's s great place to discuss the beautiful game. I hope we see you here often.

Don't forget Gignac -- he is a striker too. In fact, I think he is better than Giroud and would put away a lot of those chances that the Arsenal man has been missing.

    Hi welcome.

As for your points, Benzema and Lacazette are both better strikers who we left at home. We also have APG (not that I think he should be starting). As for Griezmann, what do you mean? His role for Atletico is SS and that's where he excels.

I'm not being harsh on Giroud, I said he is a good player. That's a very fair description. He is not world class.

Recorded the game and finally got a chance to watch and somehow managed to not hear the result beforehand. DD got the starting lineup wrong. Who knows what he was thinking but he realized it was a mistake and went back to a 4-3-3 with Pogba replacing Martial. I like Martial a lot and think he has something to add to this squad but he seemed very nervous and needed to be taken out. Griezmann scored his usual goal coming off the bench (right @Pandore ? ;) )

DD needs to motivate this team better going forward and encourage them to play quicker with more urgency. They showed good spirit to finally break the deadlock but not a good performance today.

Playing well is quite secondary. I hate to sound like a broken record, but results are all that matters. There are plenty of teams who would give anything for this ability to pick up wins when not playing particularly well.

This team's finishing is wayward, but if Payet keeps pulling the strings the way he has been doing lately, it's only of matter of time before the goals start flying in. I can't wait for Sunday!

I also feel that the game against the Swiss could be a turning point for the team. The game against them during the WC was a goal fest so why not again this time? I always thought those defensive eastern european teams would be a hard nut to crack.

He is quite the super sub! I feel bad for him not being nearly good enough to start a game for France or for Atletico. Poor guy. :D

i knew tinkering with the system was not the problem, it damages the self esteem of players rather than make them stronger , once pogba and greizeman came in , the rhythm of the players game jumped up..

motivation , making players believe in themselves and their abilities, tactical changes

yeah sure, but honestly almost none of those headers were easy except the one that he hit off the post. Its not like Benzema would have scored on any of the other harder attempts. Gignac...maybe.

Although if you're going to tinker, might as well do it in the group stage against a weaker team when you're pretty much assured to go through to the next round. Maybe DD figured he would blood Martial and see if a Kante-Matuidi holding midfield duo would protect the defense better. Who knows. But it didnt produce any free-flowing football thats for sure and he probably wont be using that exact line-up again any time soon. Had Martial been awesome on the left wing and we'd been up 3-0 at the half maybe he would have subbed Griezmann on for Giroud and see how that looked. Too bad.

I agree and I would add also Martial, he couldn't finish a dribbling or shoot, really frustrating!

I'm sicknened by the "anti-Pogba" campaign that has been going on in the press these past few weeks. They got what they asked for : Coman and Martial to start over Griezmann and Pogba and it did not work at all. :whistling: The only people to care about his gesture are the journalists.

DD should rest most of his starters, with the exception of Pogba and Griezmann. I'd love to see Gignac at centre-forward, Digne at left-back, Schneiderlin as the holding midfielder, and Mandanda in goal. This team has a lot of depth. I think what separates France from other European nations is that their best players play for some of the biggest clubs around the continent. The net result is that the national team is a reflection of different styles and characteristics.
