So DCFC had their home opener yesterday. By looking at their supporters' Twitter feeds, you'd never know a soccer game was played. I really think a smoke bomb party was what really happened Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Not sure how long you followed the Fire, but upon their inception, every group who occupied Section 8 were utterly convinced that they were, in fact, God's gift to the world of Soccer and nobody had ever seen their like before. Except of course for all the teams who had....
Since 1998 | And here I thought we were just uncreative clods who could only sing Hey Fire Gooooooooooooo Thank God we had everyone elses' tall shoulders to stand on... Or maybe what everyone one else thought never really mattered to us
But hey, DCFC has the completely empty gesture of "support" from the Timbers Army... whatever the hell that means?
FU***CK MODERN FOOTBALL! Dumb Americans calling it soccer again, bloody hell! True lads, fish & chips at the pub, just like the hardcore hooligans of NYCFC. edit: I felt for these guys a couple of weeks ago, but they're just cringey euro-poseurs. I take my post back. I think I posted in the MLS expansion thread.
Ugh. Indeed. In DC, the District Ultras, who are actually a fun group of guys. (I see/speak/drink with several of them almost every DC home game) made a small print run of a t-shirt that reads: "Defend RFK Stadium from Modern Football". Cringe. Wince. The fact that there is NOTHING in the sports world that represents "Modern Football" more than MLS either hasn't occurred to the t-shirt designer or doesn't matter to the t-shirt designer. They like the slogan, so who cares if it's total nonsense for an MLS team's supporter to have on their back. I happen to be friends with a Celtic supporter in his 40's who lived through the sectarian days of the Old Firm and a Bundesliga supporter in his 50's who was there for the political right vs. political left violence of the 1980's and 1990's. Neither one of them are longing for a return to the days before "modern football". The fact that I can travel to an away game in both Germany and the United States and am in no danger of say, being stabbed is actually a good thing.
All that being said, I stand by the fact that Detroit City FC itself is a FANTASTIC story of what some folks can accomplish when they put their minds to it. The NG (a separate entity) just needs to grow up a bit.
Their idealism is great, but if they want to torpedo attempt to make sure that pro soccer still exists in the city a decade or more from now, then grow up and f-ck off. The problem with the Northern Guard is that most of them are total newbies to following American soccer and don't have a clue how unstable everything below MLS really is despite the sometimes valiant efforts of supporters. ..... or to put it another way, they're having fun now. Most of us have been there, but in a few years they'll need to update their stylish calf tattoo to say: "CITY 'TIL I move to Macomb Twp because I need to put my kids in a decent public school system, and my sitter can only do one night this week and we have parent teacher conferences, OR TIL I DIE, WHICHEVER COMES FIRST !"
Well. wasn't one of the founders of one of those groups in Section 8 originally from Seattle? Just saying...
I can go you one further and say that many of the NG aren't even really soccer fans at all. That's coming from two Keyworth investors who also happened to be two of my oldest buddies and were at the DCU vs. RBNY match two weeks ago. When they join in the "******** MLS" chants, many aren't even really quite sure what they're chanting.

To the NG's credit, they appear to have removed/ignored this post. To support a specific candidate would be against everything I know about supporters groups. Plus, isn't it funny that he isn't even a rep for Detroit? ("City" 'till I die", indeed) A primary rule for all three supporters groups I ever knew was absolutely zero specific political candidates or parties will be supported or endorsed. We support the team. Political statements are another thing. FCK MLS is fine. (Dumb, but fine.) Printing a rainbow version of your crest as a statement of support for your gay members or a camo crest as a message of support for your military members is fine. Printing an official SG scarf that says "Vote for candidate X" would be totally out of line.
Great point. Of the MLS Original 8, only 3 have stadiums in the city of their namesake, and none of those stadiums are in what would be called "downtown proper", though San Jose's Avaya Stadium would be the closest to "downtown proper" at roughly 2.5 miles northwest. In the future, DCU's upcoming stadium may even be closer to its downtown proper than SJ. Just to be fair, I'm not much of a "downtown or bust" guy. As far as I'm concerned, as long as the stadium is in the city proper and has decent public transit, then it's a good place. And pretty much all the new MLS stadiums coming up meet my requirements just fine No more Frisco, no more Commerce City, no more Carson bullshit.
