We have to be careful with these extensions, look at what happened with Ramos after he got a lengthy extension. I don't see why we would renew a player who has a contract till 2019. You never know how they will handle going into the 30s. I'd rather wait a year before giving him an extension.
The biggest indicator of this renewal is the club showing faith in the player and helping him. It's also good because he knows he'll be part of the plans next season and not having to spend another summer (hopefully) being the subject of transfer speculation.
The contract extension has nothing to do with that. His current contract runs till 2019, he's having a good season. That's enough insurance that we aren't going to sell him, unless he's found guilty. We will (at least should) sign another striker to compete with him and give us alternatives/options.
Great so the club will give him a new fat contract and sign no other competition for him again so he will have a easy ride like hes had hes whole career here .. not saying the club shouldnt keep him either ...but if we dont buy another striker this summer and just keep benz we are idiots .
If you believe that nonsense then you believe we'll give Benzema a contract extension one year removed from his previous contract extension.
Since we did the same to Negredo in '09. That said, I believe if we do exercise the buyout its to keep him here.
Negredo's situation was different. No way we bring him back to get a profit off of him. Florentino cares about prestige too much to do that. Anyway, i don't put too much stock in these reports of a re-up for Benzema. Surely we will wait to see how his legal issues unfold.
Has Morata actually significantly improved since we sold him to Juve? Isn't he like the 3rd choice striker there?
He is third choice behind Mandzukic and Dybala. Half of his matches this season have been substitute appearances. He has only 6 league goals this season.
Juve has a clause in our agreement that we can't really do that, and neither would the player agree to return to Madrid for a scenario like that. The decision is Morata's to make. If he doesn't want to come back, he doesn't have to.
He was the best Juve player when it mattered in the CL. Without him, the Bayern tie would've been put to bed early. Scored as many goals as Madzukic did and has one more than Dybala in the tournament. He's arguably the best striker Juve have in the CL. He pasted us, and put the fear into Barca in a final that they had practically won.
Morata might not be scoring goals every game but he is scoring goals when its needed, he's scoring important goals and making very important assist as well. I think he could be very helpful.
Well, you're right. Thought the extension would tie him up for 4 seasons instead 5 seasons. I'd done the math wrong in my head cos I was browsing through rather quickly yesterday. Oh well, I think Benzema can be our starting #9 for a good 3 years, after which he can play a substitute role in the last year or two. It would be nice to have one or two senior players backing up the next generation. Even if this were true, ain't nothing wrong with that. Madrid isn't a charity to be giving up millions on a transfer for no reason, and I don't think Perez cares about being a charity either.
So what does Morata really offer us day to day in La Liga when we have trouble against a team like Las Palmas again? We need to consolidate our shit against small teams too, because that's where La Liga is won or lost. I just don't know what Morata would add, qualitatively, that someone like Jese (on form) or Mayoral (future) cannot do. Scoring 6 goals in like 12 CL games doesn't justify all this fanfare and discussion. Is he really someone we need? Someone explain this to me please. As for Benzema, this is just another part of the cycle. Watch, early next season he'll have a slump or some injury or something and then people will complain and others will defend and we will just have this conversation all over again.
For me Morata is the type of player who can come off the bench and get a much needed goal or provide a much needed assist. He's done it time after time for Juventus and I'd be very happy if he could do it here too.
Depending on his form after his 30s, i don't mind him staying. But i would be very careful with these long extensions. There's a lot that can go wrong.
A big, strong and fast player can certainly help in those games you mentioned. Him and Benzema would be perfect strikers for us, both offering something different. I think they can play together, and Morata is still 23 and showed signs that he can really really step it up in big games. He's also one of our guys, that matters to me too. We lost the last 2 La Ligas because we sucked vs the bigger teams, not small teams. With Atletico now being a contender too, we need a strong bench that gives us a lot of options.
I really don't see what Morata offers vs. your above average, €20m, striker. I'm not big on this Spanish golden boy BS, because in modern football, more often it counts for diddly squat (please don't mention Barca's canteros, they are a huge exception). In terms of him being genuine competition for Benzema!? Pfft...b!tch please...
Those who are saying they don't rate Morata, put your money where you mouth is. Give me your list of backup strikers who are better than Morata; also consider cost. If anyone posts some stupid shit like "Ohh Lewandoski!" or "Dybalazaaz!"? @Horsehead ban them permanently.
