My first knowledge of Johann was from watching a replay of the 1976 World Cup final against Germany on PBS 'Soccer made in Germany' show. Even though they lost, the Dutch Orange Macine / total soccer team played a more entertaining game with more individual skill.

I was a teenager and had only been playing for a year or two and I went to a NASL game and saw him play.

He was at the end of his career but he carried him self with a cultured imperiousness and intelligence that only a great player could pull off.

During the game, I saw him take a ball down the left sideline before midfield after getting behind the first line of pressure when he looked up and (without slowing down) struck the ball with the outside of his right boot in a long, arching diagonal cross downfield. The ball sailed over the top of everyone and landed precisely at the feet of the streaking right forward who was just a foot inside the right corner of the opponents penalty area.

I had just enough experience in playing to know how hard that is to do with the outside of the right foot for such a long distance in the air.

At that moment, I fell more in love with this sport.

    RIP

Heft, thanks for starting the thread. You're the first notice I got of this sad passing. I am of an era that, well, I remember as a youngster sitting in a completely dark space in my grandparents' house in deep deep deep East Texas listening to a scratch AM play-by-play of Dallas Tornado games on a radio with no one else in the room, remembering Cruyff's presence in the NASL. I was an NASL baby. I grew into soccer wth Pele, Beckenbauer, Cruyff, Rote Jr., and many more. Johann's passing is a truly sobering, sad moment for me, for what's been important to me for so many decades. It's a time I fear--no--I know, will not be remembered here by many in the USA, and that saddens me. But I see Cruyff as one of those building blocks to what eventually became MLS, what became the US national team that qualifies for every World Cup now (but pisses most of us off these days), but could just as easily have been as irrelevant as Bahamas or Venezuela or Luxembourg without that subtle history and influence of the NASL. Further, Cruyff is one of the main protagonists of making soccer fun to watch, and fun to win with.

R.I.P. Johan. All I can say is you meant a lot to me.

as a 30 year barcelona fan, i am sad to see this passing of both a legend and class act. his brain matched his athleticism and he truly was the greatest european footballer of the 20th century.
