Yeah, one of the Nike partners was big into music. Thus the Chicago Rhythm thing. But nerdy reg'lar guy Peter Wilt personally stood up against that name/idea. It takes characters like Peter, with authentic connection to the sport and grass roots, with some passion and integrity, to see the kind of progress I like. Much as I'm annoyed by Beckham, he could have a really positive influence as an owner. I doubt he would put up a three sided stadium or lay down turf. He's gonna care about the right things.
This is true. Most of the names and certainly the jerseys were crap. I think they included a bunch of skate rats in their focus groups. But scorpion could have worked well as a logo. Team names should be plural: Earthquakes, Timbers, Whitecaps, Sounders (yuck), even MetroStars and Rapids were pretty decent. Burn? Clash? Wiz?! (what were they thinking?!) Still, I'm really glad that we have a league, warts and all. The early years were pretty ugly, but we're a decent league now. And I get that early on, MLS didn't want to reach back to NASL days, but that was a wrong choice, as history has shown. I bought a jersey at that inaugural game. Still have it, but damn it's ugly. My favorite jersey from those years, and yes I still have a bunch of Clash and old Quakes jerseys (all MLS era). Go Quakes!! - Mark
Re: the A's and the elephant. In the early 1900s, the manager of the NY Giants, John McGraw, sarcastically referred to the Philadelphia A's (Connie Mack was either the manager or the owner or both at the time) as the "white elephants" of the American League. The A's and CM began to wear the elephant logo as kind of an act of defiance and it's been with the club ever since (Phil-KC-Oak).
Aha - like Led Zeppelin. See, it's hard to make that kind of thing up! Though I'm not sure it's more relevant/less obscure to Oakland than Scorpions or Ray Harryhausen movies to San Jose. Visually, Scorpions take well to kiddie treatment or more "mature" graphic treatment. Nike went back to a scorpion motif to sell soccer shoes recently.
I was there. Wish I still had the t-shirt with the original MLS logo (they changed the colors after the first season). ... Was at 5-4 also.
Sampson had named Harkes captain for life and that was the title of John Harkes book. Sampson stated he will not have dropped Harkes had he not crossed over the line. Because he was sleeping with his teammates wife, was the reason for the drop not because of his form. Former USA Coach Admits Dropping John Harkes In '98 Over John Harkes Affair? Oh wow that must have sucked....My sister actually got the hood of her car stolen while she parked outside attending a game. It was not at the inaugural match but a few home games later....

My wife and I attended the game (sat on the West side about 10 rows behind the team bench) with my parents baby sitting our 2 yr old at the time. The red shirts and other stuff are packed up in storage, but I found our Founders Club Shirts and will wear them to the April 2 game. As far as the game, it was great to have soccer back in San Jose after the NASL had folded. The atmosphere was electric, but the game itself, not so much. Some 0-0 or 1-0 games can be exciting, but this wasn't one of them. Obviously, everyone went home happy with a win.
Little known fact: I had ordered a Carlos Ruiz pinata from the lady on Ebay, but then Landon jumped ship and we just had to change it. The logos were all authentic because the Quakes media department gave me the disc with the MLS graphics. The photo that ran with Dylan's story in the Merc was taken in my backyard... BTW, I was at the inaugural game. Picked up a ticket at the Sunnyvale Wherehouse (I'm old) that afternoon when they released some last minute. I can't recall if it was Meola or Lalas that took off their cleats after the intros and handed them to kids in the front row.

I took seven people I think. We sat on the east side, because it was cheaper. My pals were impressed by the size of the crowd and the enthusiasm. A lot of people managed to sneak in without tickets (or with forged tickets?), but there was no room for them, so they got kicked out. My pals were starting to think the game was boring, and then Waldo scored. Good times. Go Clash!! - Mark

You know, I remember Cindy Wynalda. I am not condoning what either her what Harkes did especially as public figures but from what I heard, Eric was far from a saint... Good for Wilt for standing up to the league! Some of those team names and color schemes were horrible. He use to post on BS but I think he is involved with the Indy Eleven so I don't think he wants to post on the forum anymore. I can't stand him either but even the worst press might be good for MLS.
