As much as I would like to see the team stay in the area, there is always the possibility they could end up in the West if NYCFC isn't ready.
I don't see purchasing/relocation as a distinct possibility here. I'm not sure exactly what the economics of NWSL is, but whether it's viable or not, my guess is that most interested groups would rather start from scratch than purchase an existing team.
Maybe they would, but historically expansion teams don't usually fare that well (The 2010 Independence and 2011 Flash being the lone exceptions I can think of, but in most sports, especially when they are more established, that doesn't happen). And especially if there's one team folding while one team is expanding (a dispersal draft and expansion draft in the same offseason is just silly). Better to just move that team's roster to the other team. Sure there will be some players that don't want to move if the relocation is far away, but the same thing happens to players taken in the expansion draft.
Right now I don't see the league allowing the team to fold up. Would be an image problem for them, however, how long the league and/or US Soccer would be willing to pay the bills, if it were to come to that, is hard to say, but I am sure, for the sake of expediency, would more then welcome a MLS team to step in, finding some creative ways to make it worthwhile for them.
I wish someone had decided that NYFC should not take the field until they had something better than the travesty they are currently calling a field.
Clear your schedule for 3:00 PM ET tomorrow... We have a MASSIVE player signing to announce! #GetYourPopcornReady pic.twitter.com/5rRgygqYtW— NJ/NY Gotham FC (@GothamFC) February 10, 2016
At this point just announcing that they will no longer be losing any of their players will be a massive announcement. Though all signs have to point to them signing Ridriguez right? Though I'm not sure how massive that is. Yes drafting a player doesn't mean they will automatically play for you but it is still not a massive player signing
It is massive because u have to figure RR is sitting in there with her head in her hands wondering what she is getting herself into. The European option is still there til they get her signed. After this the next big event for SkyBlue is a group prayer session that Australia doesnt make the Olympics.
Sky Blue needs to go the WNY route and trade O'Hara, Kerr and Foord and whoever else to contenders for picks in next years draft. Build around Rodriguez, Killion and whoever they get in the 2017 draft.
I can see moving O'Hara for a pick if that's the way u want to go but what do u gain by replacing Foord and Kerr who have three years in the league plus international experience for two college players the same age with no experience?
She's a former fan favorite so I can see some people excited about her return. But its not like she's been an active player the last few years so who knows how well this will actually work out in the end.
She was one of my favorite players and I'm glad to see her back in the game. The last thing I remember her doing was working a soccer camp in Hawaii.
For a while she did, yeah, but I don't think she had staying power with the NT or anything like that.
Yes, played on the national sevens rugby union team a few years ago I think. PS- Rugby will be played at the Olympics this year for the first time in years.
I know bagging on SBFC is the cool thing right now, but Tasha Kai is a good signing, IMHO. Even if she can't play at the level she used to, she's still had USWNT experience. Will be a good veteran presence to have around for someone like Maya Hayes.
I would think Rampone have enough veteran presence for everyone on that team. Also, I doubt we see Hayes up top again especially after this signing. And to be serious for a minute, I still like Tasha, heck I still have a picture of her and myself displayed prominently in my house. The problem is, Sky Blue little lost their hands down 3 best players (Nadim, Freels, and Cameron) this off season. So if they spend the last 36 hours hyping a massive player signing, one would hope that it is someone who has a good chance of making an impact on the pitch. I'll grant them that this signing at the very least does generate some excitement for their fans. Problem is most of us haven't seen Kai play in a while now so yeah, it is underwhelming.
