I seem to remember from my brief foray into the comments section on the NPR story that the bottom of the internet even figured out how to blame a black guy for the situation: the person Snyder put in charge of Flint when the city went under state control

If we did, there would be no reason for posting on P&CE.

I'm not surprised they exist, I've been largely successful in avoiding media comments sections so I will not be taking your suggestion.

The problem is, it's inaccurate. A corporation (I presume he's referring to GM) didn't poison the water of 300k people. It poisoned water nobody was drinking out of. The Governor, much later, made everyone drink out of it.

Why are you not demonizing the black woman running the city that had actual authority for making the switch? Does that not fit your narrative?

I'm trying to figure out whether this post is a brilliant bit of irony, or the dumbest thing I've read so far this month.

And to add, there's several problems with the Detroit Public School districts.

To put it this way: Michigan's infrastructure is a mess. And then they wonder why people leave the state.

I had the same confusion so I didn't answer. The optimist take on this. You went 2/3rds into the month before finding a good candidate for dumbest writing of the month. :)

Interestingly, I just read an article the other day about how gentrification is getting legs in Detroit, with 20-somethings moving in and hip restaurants opening and all that. If any jobs at all are available for young folks, it's inevitably going to happen: the mucked-up schools don't matter to 20-somethings, and the massive population shift away has meant real estate there is insanely cheap.

I've been trying to find an excuse to go to Detroit sometime in the summer: there's a musician there I'd like to study with for a little while if he'd put up with me, and John's Carpet House sounds as far up my alley as anything could possibly be.

It's only two or three areas that have seen some radical shifts. 5-6 years ago, nobody would even think of going to those areas except downtown for Red Wings, Lions, and Tigers games. The rest of the city is still in awful shape and there's areas I wouldn't (nor would lifelong Detroiters) dare step into.

Funny enough, I've been looking to get out of Detroit/Michigan for a while.

EDIT: Once those 20-somethings start families, they will get concerned. I already know a few families who ended up moving back to the suburbs once kids got involved. Schools was one of the reasons.

Oh, I have no doubt of it. Even in DC, which is not as bad off, tons of young people move into the city because they want to live in the city; and then they move across the river to Virginia or out to Montgomery/Prince Georges as soon as the kids are born, because they want better schools.

But in the meantime, while those folks *are* in Detroit, they're paying taxes. And correct me if I'm wrong, but my sense has been that one of the many problems Detroit faces right now is that it's hard to fix the problems it has when the tax base has been cratered.

Meanwhile, Snyder finally decides to say something. All this to save a few million dollars and now we've got this. And coincidentally, we have more fresh water than anyone.

Oh, no doubt there. In the past, most Detroiters/Michiganders left Detroit, now I've met several people from Ohio, Washington State, Oregon, and Arkansas for examples that are moving here. But sooner or later they will end up in the suburbs.

There's a whole issue of problems Detroit has that need to be fixed, but the biggest cause of it IMO was just the managing of money.

Is this an actual response .. I hope everyone responsible is held accountable ..if you wish to refer to that as "demonizing" that is your call .. And if the word erase annoys you perhaps redact fits better , from the 2014-2015 documents the Snyder administration has made "public"... However , as mentioned in TRMS last night ; most of the key decisions that led to this crisis were made (and shown in documentation as well, hopefully) in 2013 .: and that has YET to be released .. How many months do they need to come out clean?

The last time I robbed a bank, I got off because it was the Fed's fault for not properly enforcing the laws against bank robberies.
