I'm trying to find some information about the San Jose Oaks and the California Jaguars who faced each other in the 1996 U.S. Open Cup.

I'm working on giving usopencup.com a bit of a makeover, and I'm double-checking a lot of our historical information and I'm trying to find the following info:

U.S. Open Cup - First Round
    June 28th, 1996 (I'm pretty sure that's correct)
San Jose Oaks vs. California Jaguars (Oaks won 3-2)

    Information I need:
    (1) WHO HOSTED?
    (2) WHAT WAS THE NAME AND LOCATION OF THE STADIUM?

    BONUS: Goalscorers/Lineups ?

Does anyone know anyone who might have this information, or was affiliated with those clubs?

Thanks in advance for your help...

I believe that the owner of the California Jaguars was Robert Alderete but I'm not sure where he is now because I believe he moved out of the area.

Britania Arms is a British Pub in the South Bay Area, There is one in Curpertino, 2 in San Jose and now also in the Santa Cruz area. Andy is a partner who was involved with the soccer team (the SJ Oaks) which was owned by the Pub. He should give you all the answers!

No problem anytime! I think former Earthquakes players were the coaches of those teams. Chris Dangerfield coached the San Jose Oaks & Joe Silveira coached the California Jaguares.

My brother-in-law and Robert had their kids playing in AYSO at one point so they knew each other very well. I told my brother-in-law about this and he'll try getting the phone number for Robert who was one of the owners of the California Jaguars if that's still ok with you, when I get that info. I'll forward it to you.

    I really appreciate the help.

The soccer world is a small place, but trying to find teams that folded a long time ago has been extra tough. The basic info (score, stadium, date etc.) isn't so bad...but finding lineups, goalscorers etc. -- that'll be a different story.

If you think you might know quite a few people in the soccer world...check out my thread in the US Open Cup section where I list ALL of the info that I'm looking for.

Just wanted to let you know that Andy Hewitt was a gold mine of information. He told me that the First Round game vs. the Jaguars was hosted by the Jags, but they didn't play at their usual home field, so they played at West Valley College.

Andy is also going to provide a TON of info about the 1992 Open Cup where the Oaks won the whole thing...and seems to have stories galore when it comes to the Oaks experiences in the USOC (look for a story or two to pop up on the site down the road).

    Thanks a ton!

I knew Andy would know everything. I used to hang out at the Britania Arms in Almaden where he was owner/mgr. Laurie Calloway worked there for a while during the late 80's and was coach of the Oaks. Andy told me the whole story of how the Oaks brought up a law suite against the San Francisco Bay Balckhawks & Dan VanVoorhis for trying to block a Concacaf open cup match at Spartan against I believe it was Morelia. I was there the Oaks lost 4-1 I believe with Simon Ireland scoring the loan goal. Supposedly, during one of those years in an away match the Oaks went to Mexico and held their own down there before losing in the last 15 minutes. Andy told me that Oaks all purpose man Frank Vanden Brand Horning started kicking all the Mexican forwards in the legs coming down the wings.

He told me something about that. Monterray (sp?) was the Mexican club and there was all sorts of drama surrounding that Champions Cup matchup. (He didn't mention the lawsuit, but he did mention that they had a hard time shelling out the money to rent Spartan Stadium).

I'm sure we'll have a story about the Oaks' experiences up on the site somewhere down the road. Right now, I have enough on my plate with this history project....one thing at a time.

(This is why I've been looking around for people to help out with the site...if anyone is interested - PM me)

I was able to confirm the following:

    1996 US Open Cup
    Round 1
    June 28th, 1996
San Jose Oaks at California Jaguars (Oaks won 3-2)
    West Valley College

Now, I'm trying to find match reports from early Open Cup games. Check back in the Open Cup section of Big Soccer for a list that I'll be putting together.

    Thanks!

It's nice to see that someone out there still cares about these games. The Oaks was a great team that has a rich tradition along with many teams from the CA Super League like the SF Greek Americans, Fresno International, Concordia, SFIAC, Santa Clara Sporting, El Farolito, Glens, PAC, etc. Many players from this league went into the MLS those first couple of years from this league. In many ways the USL helped to disassemble these clubs with these rich traditions.

Anyways, I played in this game and we did win 3-2. David Santesteban scored two goals and had one assist. The other score for the Oaks came from Dzung Tran; one of the finest players that I've ever played with. The goals from the Jags were from Ryshiem Henderson and Richie Lewis.

We went on to play the Sounders and lost 1-0. Later reports showed that the Sounders used a cup-tied player from a men's league team in Seattle which should have given the game to the Oaks. I found out that Andy had known afterward, but the costs associated with playing the Galaxy in the next round was pretty steep. He was already flying in about four different players for games. I think he knew that this was the end of the line for the old US Open Cup as once was. Actually we had won the equivalent of the old regional final before the game against the Jags which should have qualified us for the national championship final four phase, but USSF was making way for the MLS and grandfathered them into the competition and stated that those games that we played were merely preliminary rounds.

In the end it was a great run and a fantastic team that had accomplished players such as Simon & Gary Ireland, Jeff Baicher, Erik Yamamoto, Frank Van den Branhorninge, Dave Palic, David Santesteban, Dzung Tran, Steve Robertson, Steve Corpening, Vince Martinez, John Cairel, Paul Holocher among others, and player-coach Chris Dangerfield.

Well I hope this helps you with your project.

I remember Laurie Calloway wanting Simon Ireland to sign a contract badly for the Clash in 1996. Rumor was he was not at all happy with what they offered and was making more with his regular job & getting paid under the table playing for the Oaks on Sunday at Watson Bowl.

Indeed that was the case with Simon. At that point in time the league had already signed the bulk of their players (USMNT, A-league, & indoor players)and were offering the league minimum of a whopping 24K to either young players with promise or to older experienced players that still wanted to play.

I distinctly remember Simon scoffing at the offer....he was doing very well with his soccer camp business and I believe it is still going strong to this day.

It was a shame and still is today, as many quality players don't get a chance to play in such a small league and/or can't continue to play in lower leagues due to lack of a professional salary.

Sounds like what I heard from a player I knew who the Clash was interested in. He was playing for the USL Sounders at the time and making more, including them picking up the tab on his round trip flights from the Bay Area to all their games.

If anyone is in touch with or knows where to find any of the California Jaguar players, please let me know ...

I think I'm all set with the San Jose Oaks.
