I like it less than the '96 logo, and maybe slightly more than the current logo, excepting the removal of the gold star.
It's O.K. - if not an improvement over the classic shield, it's no worse. On a black jersey, I think it will fade in too much. Maybe if the line around the lower portion of the shield was thicker or if it had an inner red line with an outer white line it would jump out at you more.
I could go on at length about the flaws of the new badge, but it's all been covered here already, and I've done so on Facebook anyway. I will say that I actually do like the new typeface. I didn't mind Onyx, but whatever the new one is, it's a lot better.
I was looking forward to the refresh, but I'm not feeling the new logo on many levels. The wings popping out of the badge just doesn't work for me. Same with the corset-like figure - did the maker of Barbie design this? When you see something like the Minnesota United logo, which incorporates the loon really well and combines a traditional crest with modern design elements, this just looks dull by comparison. Just my $0.02.
I'm always amazed how little professional graphic designers ever hit the mark compared to people that do it as a hobby. If you combine the previous logo and ideas from this logo (font/eagle/distict flag) you could have a classical crest that would probably not have to be touched again for decades. This looks like a very good North American sports logo is all I can say. But IMO the previous crest was better, all things considered. Columbus and San Jose have better crests after their update. San Jose only by default and Columbus' could have been better if the inner portion focussed on one design element (the checkered box pattern for me) Colorado for me has the best update to date until Portland fully embraces their game worn crest as their official logo.
Look at the sizes of "D.C. UNITED" on the old and new crests and compare both to the sizes of their respective crests. The previous Onyx text was a lot bigger % of the overall height of the old crest. In other words, IMHO, the FO chose a new and better font and then effed-up by making the writing too small on the new crest. Good grief, that's pretty obvious after only a few seconds. How did the FO not figure *that* one out after months of effort?
All the time and money spent on developing this new symbol of mediocrity could have been better spent on improving the product on the field. If you really want to sell more shirts, build a team whose shirt people would want to wear.
I like the new logo. Was worried they would go the route of many original MLS teams and completely change things.
Right. This element will certainly be gone when new ownership decides to "update" the crest in 5 - 10 years. What should be classic and immutable is now rendered disposable. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.
