Supposed to be be rainy here in DC tomorrow, which should impact both the crowd and obviously the field at Georgetown. Curious if the sloppy field benefits Hoyas or BC more.
Creighton @ UNC tonight at 7 EST on EPSN3. Chapel Hill weather: This Afternoon Mostly sunny, with a high near 70. Light southwest wind. Tonight Mostly cloudy, with a low around 50. Calm wind.
UNC-Creighton preview in the Omaha paper. Odd that there's no reference to the coaching connections at the two schools. http://www.omaha.com/creighton/blue...cle_b5b3aea6-17ad-513d-b1de-470e76172d55.html EDIT: They did that story yesterday. Kudos to them and my apologies. http://www.omaha.com/creighton/crei...cle_557a8a51-f9c6-517c-9fcf-863e222b95a3.html ONE MORE EDIT: With UNC playing State today in football, not much ink this week for the soccer team. There's a few graphs in the Raleigh paper after an opening about the Duke women's team. http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/college/acc/article46467725.html
Creighton goes up 1-0 late in the first half on a Timo Pitter goal. Well kind of. It probably won't be ruled an own goal as the shot was on target, but it really wasn't going in without the defender toe poking it past his own keeper. UNC seems to have had a little bit better of the game so far to me. But will only have 7 minutes to get an equalizer before the half.
Th Heels seem to have no idea where the goal actually is. Sorely lacking in precision in both passing an shooting accuracy and as such they are wasting possession and, likely, their season. Also seem unable to find anyone who can cross or hit a free kick to take advantage of Hume's considerable size advantage.
Ends 1-0. Full credit to Creighton. They got the goal they needed then bunkered but UNC didn't deserve to advance. Couldn't pass or shoot straight and a team that doesn't do that shouldn't be in the Elite Eight.
Exactly my thoughts. Creighton showed some great discipline to keep their defensive shape that second half and never gave the Tar Heels a good look at goal even though they conceded all kinds of space and time on the ball to UNC. And UNC obliged that tactic by making some very questionable decisions and terrible touches in the final third.
This is the seventh time in eighth seasons that Elmar Bolowich has been to the Elite Eight. He took UNC to the final in 2008 and the College Cup in 09 and 10 then made the Cup with Creighton in 11 and 12 and made the QFs last year and, now, this season, too. (They were upset by Seattle in 13, in case you were wondering what happened that year.) And, of course, he won a national title in 2001. Hard to argue with all that.
UNC lost too much firepower last year to be as exquisite (IMO) as they were last year as to when they went against UCLA out there in La La land and lost a tough one in the College cup series against the Bruins. That game was the best game I've seen in 4 years.. Not is all lost for UNC though as their recruiting class is one of the very best coming in as they've loaded up on the Chicago Fire prospects Notre Dame still stained NC 2013 Champs Tman
Halftime of the 1:00 games. Wake and IU are scoreless. Pretty even but the Hoosiers look a little sharper and more organized. Syracuse 2, Seattle 0. Presumably because of the RPI, one of the best teams in the West is losing to an ACC team on goals in the 2nd and 20th minutes, both assisted by Liam Callahan. And an upset is brewing in DC as Boston College leads Georgetown 1-0 courtesy of a goal by Fr. Trevor Davock.
Seattle gets one back - from Soph. David Olsen, his 16th, which ties for the national lead - in the 66th but Syracuse restored their two goal lead four minutes later and it's 3-1 with in the 74th. Meanwhile, Keegan Rosenberry. assisted by Chris Lema, has tied the game for Georgetown. It's 1-1 in the 69th. Wake-IU still scoreless.
Terps up 2-0 (after just hitting the crossbar). To clarify, scored early on a header from a free kick, then hit the crossbar on a free kick, ND cleared and MD came right back down and scored.
ND scores on its first SOG, 2-1 with about 4 minutes left in first half. Deflected off a defender, but I don't think it will be an OG.
Goal Wake! Really nice play Ian Harkes after IU didn't clear the ball well and Harkes makes a pass Dad would have been proud of and found sub Ricky Greensfelder, who finished very well.
wake wins 1-0. i'm too hungover from oaken bucket yesterday to start drinking again today. major bummer.
Wake wins 1-0. IU fans should be proud, they are a good team and played very well and in other years they win this game. Femi will be a solid pro and the Hoosiers bring a lot back. Wake will need to be sharper in attack going forward.
And Syracuse advances 3-1. Seattle had a great year and should be proud. Pete Fewing has that program going places. I believe this is the furthest 'Cuse has ever gone in the NCAA Tournament. G'town-BC headed to OT 1-1. Winner gets 'Cuse.
G'town-BC headed to PKs after zero SOG in OT. A lot of brackets - including mine - hanging in the balance here as I don't think many people picked BC to make the QFs. A year ago the Hoyas were eliminated in PKs in the QFs by UVa. In 2012 they beat Maryland in the SFs in PKs.
There goes my bracket. BC edges Georgetown 5-4 in PKs as senior Keegan Rosenerry was the only shooter to not convert. The Eagles advance to face Syracuse, meaning the ACC is guaranteed at least one College Cup team for the 15th straight year and that we'll have at least one first-time team at the final four.
