Or teams could spend smartly and be rewarded for being good organizations and not being Toronto. *shrug*

yes. let's rig the league so that MLS Cup finalists are set from the beginning of the season. because that makes the league so much more fun!

LA was in the final last year and has won, what, 3 of the last 4 MLS cups? You can't blame Dallas for the fact that your NYCFCs can't get their act together. Dallas is a better team than than a lot of these clubs that try to shoehorn a bunch of multimillionaires into a clubhouse full of upper-middle-class guys. Plus what good does it do the league if people tune in to see Lampard and Pirlo and end up watching horrible soccer?

Yeah, because the Galaxy winning MLS Cup 3 of the last 4 years wasn't enough of a reward.

Also, the "cheapskates" this year (NYRB and DAL) both challenged for the Supporter's Shield. There's no reason why the high-spending teams couldn't also challenge for that, but both of those teams made the most out of the resources they had and didn't recklessly spend, like Toronto did with no eye to building a cohesive team. There's no reason to reward Toronto or others for incompetence.

And we could go back to the pre-Beckham days and take a huge pay cut in TV contract revenue.

Too bad they took Francesca off TV. I'd like to watch his show tomorrow.

Definitely streaming me some WFAN tomorrow later today.

The only reason that they have to watch horrible soccer is because there's a salary cap there that keeps teams like NYCFC that want to spend from surrounding those guys with better players.

You might be more convincing if the Galaxy hadn't won 3 of the last 4 MLS Cups.

For the record, the highest-rated English-language MLS Cup final was in 2006 between New England and Houston. Beckham signed in 2007.

That same salary cap also keeps the league from spending far in excess of revenues like its predecessor the NASL.

The league right now is rigged so that low-spending teams can compete with teams that would spend more to win if they could.

Meh ... a final is a singular event. Next year it'll be different teams, and the year after that it'll be different teams. But a career like Fabian Castillo or Pareja's coaching career can leave a lasting impact for many years in ways that are more meaningful than a 10-20% variation is ratings for just one game. I thought the whole point of soccer is to see who wins on the field. Last I checked MLS kind of has the same rules for everyone. If those "big spenders" can't figure out how to win then they have only themselves to blame. I have one message for those teams : stop whining and be better!

That statement is completely accurate. There are teams in this league that would spend more if they could in order to win if the cap were not there.

That doesn't mean it has any benefit for the greater good. MLS has already made it clear that some level of parity is part of their overall vision. If you don't like it, there's several other leagues around the world where cups are for sale. Go enjoy ...
