    Here's what the rules say:

Associations wishing to call up a player who is playing abroad must notify the player in writing at least 15 days before the day of the match for which he is required... The player’s club shall also be informed in writing at the same time. The club must confirm the release of the player within the following six days.

    http://resources.fifa.com/mm/docume.../64/30/regulationsstatusandtransfer2010_e.pdf

I don't know the mechanics of the process... e.g., email or fax, but I do know that the NT may include a number of players who won't actually be called up, serving as a stand-by list of sorts. So a player may be on the initial 15 day release list, but not ended up being called in on the squad (or he could decline the call-up). Sometimes a club mentions a player is being called up, but he isn't on the final list because he was an alternate. I would assume the FA notifies the player of his status (primary squad or alternate) at the time of the notification.

More than 7 years after this post...

Always makes me smile when it happens.

And, @bshredder, good story. Loved the detail on his Va. high school.

Also, I think this is officially the first bad Wooten YA pun, via @Gorky, circa 2011.

Looks like Wooten has two assists so far today. Sandhausen lead 2-0 at St. Pauli

First one was because Wooten stole the ball from St Pauli as they were moving it out of the back. The second one, Wooten took on 3 players on the left wing and sent a cross in. The header was pretty unbelievable, but a great cross.

He has always been a streaky scorer. He will catch fire again.

I mean, he scored 8 goals in 31 games last season. Has scored 6 in 16 this season. He is still above pace, and the overall goal:minute ratio has been modest over the 2 year split.

    Buddle - 1 goal every 167 minutes
    Wood - 1 goal every 250 minutes
    Wooten - 1 goal every 278 minutes

He's in somewhat of a lull and will likely pick it back up, but still hasn't been a good scorer for an American striker in the 2. BL in the longer view either.

Could Wooten be called up for at least part of Camp Cupcake?

After his hot start, Wooten hasn't scored since the second week of September. He's still starting regularly, though.

They were playing a more conservative 4-2-3-1 with Wooten as the RM. Wooten wasn't scoring nor assisting from there. They've switched back to their more successful 4-3-3 with Wooten as the RF. Still nothing, but I expect him to start scoring/assisting again.
