Fletcher gets a lot of stick from Sunderland fans, but he's actually quite good most of the time.

cattermole may be the worst player I have seen in the EPL in a long time. Might as well make him captain.

I'd get Cattermole out of there. He could have multiple yellow cards at this point and is too much of a risk in a game like this. He's having a terrible game any way you look at it.

Newcastle still offering more dangerous passes and combinations going forward.

Eh, Cattermole is playing the destroyer role against a superior team. Was never going to be pretty.

I don't think Yedlin is playing well. He dives in but doesn't get the ball. The player he is defending is usually able to get their pass/cross away without problem.

Newcastle not bothering with attacking on Yedlin's side.

Sunderland keep giving Billy Jones the ball in the Newcastle half, so they're not opposed to giving the fullback the ball there. So I wonder if the reason Yedlin doesn't get it is because they don't trust him yet, or if it's a tactical decision against Newcastle.

Sunderland hate Americans (and ESPN hates soccer). Both well-known facts.

SEriously, kaboul may be the best defender and passer on the team. What a run out and touch there. well done.

Sunderland scores a third. Actually not a bad cross from a center back.

Fletcher, 5th goal in 3 years at home. Poor Jozy, he was terrible at sunderland, but by those standards, terrible is not so bad.

What I like about that Kaboul counter was he assessed the situation immediately, took the lead out wide, kept his composure and kept it simple on the cross.

    players make plays.

  18. Yedlin has stoned Perez on that side of the field.

So Sunderland proves they can beat a bad team when they're up a man. It's a start, I suppose.

Yedlin's game was pretty quiet aside from that one chance his man had in the box. For a fullback I guess it's not the worst thing you can say.

God.....................that was hard to watch. Two terrible teams.

Yedlin did well, but after the red card this wasn't really a game.

He hasn't done anything to lose his spot in the team. It's a shame Sunderland's style doesn't let him shine offensively but at the same time, defending against EPL attackers game-in and out will strengthen that side of his game.

The slide in the box was a piece of a more aggressive defensive outing. It seemed like Yedlin had been told to be quick to step up quickly to attackers on the ball, the key is not to overcommit, that's harder when trying to block a shot in the box. Other notable negative leaning incidents were the lean away (anticipating the ball to sail over?) on the Colochinni header and the 1-2.

Offensively his biggest contributions were a tackle kind of central in midfield were he faked going wide and cut it to a CM to start a break and then long outlets/throws.

    1st half Yedlin:

Love in the first 10 seconds he was bombing down the right. Hasn't made many of those since.

Tight defensively, lots of blocks, and jumped a pass showing great quickness. That was nice.

With ball at his feet he is hoofing it up to Fletcher, seemingly by design.

The one ball in a dangerous spot but put in pretty bad cross that went for goal kick.

Overall ok, no major mistakes but nothing special. He is looking for then to switch fields, he has tons of space.

I'm still a bit staggered by his 35m run from his own midfield to the penalty area. If he could just think of what to do once he arrived.

He simply blew by both teams. They didnt even have time to turn around. Put a shot at the end of that or a sliding pass to teammate, something.
