The final score is: 1 - 1 GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G P.S. = Please don't post results of other soccer (including MLS) games and other sports' games in this thread until at least 24 hours after they've ended.
i don't understand how if that referee were to watch that match again on replay, how he could ever pick up a whistle again. I don't understand the psyche it takes to embarrass one's self so completely and want to do it ever again.
I fell asleep again as the game was very sloppy and boring. I saw Wondo's goal and Bingham's saves. Not sure if I missed anything else.
At least I'm not going to bed depressed as I usually do after a Quakes game. Thanks to the tie, and the Portland loss, I'm only going to bed disappointed. Yay.
Back from the game. Not much to say other than that I'm glad we preserved our home field record against Vancouver. And I think Shea Salinas deserves a little more love on these boards than he gets. Oh and it turns out an Earthquakes beer stein is indistinguishable from a cheap transparent-plastic cup.
Really surprised that happened. I thought SKC would be toast after their 120 minute USOC final on Wednesday. Takes the sting out of the dropped points. Quakes still have a chance but probably need to win their last 2.
Not that JJ was as awful as feared, but you could also say that we were one goal celebration away from winning the game tonight
If someone told me at the beginning of the season we'd be in the discussion for the play-offs with two games to go I'd have taken in heart beat. The true frustration are the points we've thrown away. If H-Town beat Dallas tomorrow it's gonna be an interesting three weeks in our household.
Sorry, fans, tonight's game looked like a huge step down in quality from last week's. I guess that's what you'd expect, missing three starters, but we didn't look world class last week either. Why do we want to go to the playoffs? So we can sneak in one more game? Watch ourselves be humiliated by possibly the Gals? Ugh.
I was going to post the same thing. Forget about backing into the playoffs because we will exit as soon as we get in.
I wouldn't say it affected the outcome, but that has to be the worst officiated game I've ever seen in my life. And considering how much MLS I've watched, that's saying something. Just a stunning display of how NOT to run a match.
Salinas has turned into a solid offensive weapon with his new freedom to roam in the offensive third. The guy looks eager to get ball and is consistently beating defenders.
As usual, some good things, some not so good, but you can never fault him for not being earnest anyway. He was kinda beaten twice on Vancouver's goal. Near the end there was a long cross that wound up right in his lap like 6 yards from goal and would have liked to have seen him one-touch it. But he brought it down, and the window of opportunity closed pretty quickly after that.
I laughed out loud when he blew his whistle to restart play, while the Vancouver keeper's goal kick was already about to land near midfield. For most of this game, our strategy when in possession of the ball seemed to be: "kick it forward". Seemed like a fair percentage of our passes were just blindly sent forward, some of them gently lofted directly to a white shirt (or group of white shirts) as though we were returning the ball to them intentionally. On defense, the first half was chaotic, with Goodson and Koval (or Bingham and Bernardez) having mini shouting matches. We booted the ball out of bounds frantically at times, as though we were protecting a one goal lead against Barcelona. Gradual improvement in organization and energy in the second half, with Cato and Salinas providing some spark. Kudos to Cordell for following his shot and distracting the keeper into allowing a rebound for Wondo. Overall, though, a pretty lousy exhibition of soccer. If not for that nice save by Bingham near the end, I probably wouldn't have even bothered to log on and comment on this stinker.
With the results tonight, San Jose goes above the red line, but its playoff probability decreased. Bingham was MOTM. His best game, including saving the season in stoppage time. Someone should introduce Tommy Thompson to Barry Bonds and/or Victor Conte. He could use the clear. Still alive.
From about minute 70-90, the team was hustling and kept bringing the ball up for more chances. So there was reason to hope that something good would happen in stoppage. Instead, a lot of calls went against us, more timewasting, including by the referee, who was endlessly chatting up the guys or micromanaging the site of the throw-in/kick. Really, when you are 50 yards or more from goal, is it going to matter if the player is a few feet off? If you're going to be so strict about following the letter of the law, then follow the whole law, not just the paragraphs that you like.
Does anyone else notice Cato's horrible attempts to challenge for balls in the air? He doesn't even look up half the time.
Vancouver was ripe for the picking, too bad we couldn't field a stronger midfield. I was bummed to see JJ get the start. I usually don't complain about the ref, but he was incredibly poor. He wasted so much time on a lot of insignificant bullshit...really intrusive...a complete momentum killer. The good news...We got really lucky KC beat Portland...we still have a pulse. The bad news...Pelosi took a really hard whack on the shin had to leave the game against Cuba...his tourney is over. Read somewhere that it isn't broken, deep bruise and laceration... don't know how long he'll be out. The poor guy has no luck, there were only a couple minutes left in the game. He was playing LB and had an excellent game...so bummed.
I agree with everyone who has said that the referee was shit, or words to that effect. He looked like someone who had just been pulled off the street and given a 15-minute lecture in refereeing.
