Looked like he unluckily mistimed his jump. Did well though escaping the offside trap and being in the right position. I've been in the camp that Depay eventually better off in the center. He doesn't have that speed and trickery to be successful playing in the wing in the long run. Even in his short tenure with M.U, opposing players and coaches "figure him out" already. He gets crowded the second he touches the ball. He is not quick enough to get out off the trouble and ends up losing possession. Kind of like young Van Persie in many ways... RVP had a short spell playing as a winger early on, but he was/is way too slow and was ineffective. RVP worked hard improving his scoring conversion (and he is already smart enough in his link-up plays) that make him suitable playing as a CF. I am guessing this what will be the make-or-break for Depay. If he improves his finishing, there will always be place for him, otherwise he will have an uphill battle in front of him.

Are we talking about the Feyenoord (europa cup) van Persie? because at that point he was plenty fast. I don't really see a lot of parelels between van Persie and Memphis. van Persie was way more technical and more creative with the ball at 21.

Now that I think about it.. I don't then we ever had a winger like Memphis.

I was thinking RVP circa 2004/2005 when he first burst the scene with Arsenal... he was deployed as a back-up forward, playing second fiddle to the like of Henry, Bergkamp, Pires, Reyes, etc. Also with the the Netherlands national in 2006. He was a winger, with Robben at the other flank and RVN/Kuijt at center. RVP as a wide player had varying degree of success, my recollection is that he didn't make a powerful impact until after he switched to central forward.

BTW, my point was not to compare RVP and Memphis on skill or technical level. I was just saying that, like RVP, Memphis' future will not be as a wide player because of his lack of speed and ball control. I like a winger who glues himself to the ball like Robben or Overmars. Memphis is sloppy. Methinks Memphis will be better off playing in the central, be it a striker or a no. 10.

Except Depay has been even worse when playing central

But who is the competition ? PSV has Maher and Propper, Ajax plays with Klaassen and Gudelj, Feyenoord with Veijnovic and Toornstra. I like some of these players but none is very good. So yeah, as sad as it sounds, he might be the best Eredivisie AM.

Now if you compare him with the other NT options we have, I would still pick Afellay and even De Guzman above him if talking about pure attributes. Ziyech is a player people enjoy to watch because he got that Ozil vista, looks easy with the ball, has some magic, but there is nothing solid behind. No great speed, no power, no grint...He doesn't really score important goals, doesn't have a big volume on the field. His shooting, passing and dribbling ability are good, but not that great, I don't see what he can bring to NT.

Or he would do well for the NT. Can't know if he isn't tried out can we? ;)

His control of the ball is horrible, but he did something clutch again. His action lead to a goal by Mata and that goal was needed as later on it became 2-3. Memphis is both an amateur and clutch in one player. He might be the first of this type we ever produced that is like this. Normally we would have produced a Januzaj, who has better ball control. Not unimportant, he does score in Europe.

  8. Yep, I think and am sure JPBoëtius will outshine him in the longer run on the wings. JPB is technically also far more gifted than Memphis. Memphis doesnot like for a reason to be called Depay, so I accommodate to that.

In very interesting quality of his is the incredible upper body strength. we have seen that from other wingers, but never from a Dutch wingers.

Also in in the last game, I didn't think he was that bad. He still got past the Southhampton defence a couple of times. He still stand on his own compared to other Dutch wingers who can't get past anyone from 90 minutes, with the exception of Promes maybe.

The Ziyech situation is getting quit interesting. According to FIFA he can't just go to Morocco and play for the Moroccan national team. because he already has the Dutch football nationality. So for him to actually play for Marokko he'll have to do the necessary paperwork and ask FIFA permission to change his football nationality permanently.

I find this quit interesting. The FIFA law (as always) is a ********ing mess, but it looks like they have made it a little harder for players to just switch nationality after playing for U21. This will make thing a little harder for countries that leech off of other countries.

Rekik is in a good form, probably the best dutch CB of this season start. Should be called for the next NT games, would also call Van Dijk even if he suffered against Martial.

Memphis will have to be a central player eventually if he is to succeed at United.

    Hmm disagree there.

I believe in due course once/if he develops more and kicks on he could give a 30 + goals and assists output from out wide actually.

Sort of similar to Bale and Ronaldo from out wide he has that clutch as mentioned above. Don't think he has those instincts from central though.

Hakim is a magnificent player . Dutch football needs this kind of creative player who can decide the outcome of a match. We will not die , however .

I still hope that the blind Blind will have the good idea to call El Ghazi in the next matches. The loss of this player would be more dramatic IMHO

Now that Ziyech has made his decision, let's look at or our next big talent. Who is going to be our future playmaker? ..Sinkgraven? Maher?

Bart Ramselaar, Abdelhak Nouri (even a scenario comparable to Ziyech is not to exclude), Jeremy Helmer, Gustavo Hamer......

I think many of you will not agree, but I think Blind must offer a chance to Yassin Ayoub . Spain has called Mounir just to prevent possible selection of Morocco. Holland must move in this direction . Sometimes you have to ignore ethics.

    That's a sad outlook.. (I'm excluding Nouri)

Ayoub needs to perform better than he is doing right now. yes the potential is there, but we shouldn't call up players based solely on that.. Let's stick to our principles.

Nice play by Memphis to use his strength to get inside the defender and make the run to the goal mouth for the easy put in.
