My point and I would think it's a pretty obvious one, is the fact that he's not used in his proper position, therefore we shouldn't be surprised in the least if he's going to be poor. As to your rebuttal that he's not a midfielder, he may not have the attributes that you necessarily care about but it still doesn't change the fact as well that he is in actual fact, a mid. What would you consider him, putting your obvious hatred for him aside?
Given the options we have in midfield, he ought to be a backup to these guys, but I'll say it again, based on whatever "definition" you have for the position, the bottom line is that he is a midfielder. Good, bad or middle of the road is irrelevant to the fact that it's position of choice...
I'm fine with him starting a League Cup tie against a Championship side, this is where he should be playing. Not in the league or important CL games.
The issue with MF is that even though he is a Everton/Stoke/West Ham (from a few years back) player, he is needed to fill out the squad. The problem is that he has been (and might still be) used in a more prominent role. In a squad that is being properly managed, these are the games he should be playing in, so I have no issue with him being there in theory. But our squad is not being managed properly and so his involvement in this instance is what I have issues with.
So if I list down our midfielders, we have Carrick,Herrera,Basti, Schneiderlin who are all miles better than Fellaini. Rooney as well can play in the midfield better than Fellaini, so that would make Fellaini 6th choice. What?
This is the issue to be honest. We don't need to have a luxury squad player. Instead I would prefer if we gave a chance to someone like Sean Goss or Ben Pearson (before he went out on loan). This is what we used to do before, and that is what we should be doing going forward as well. I don't see why we need to have a squad player who is on big wages.

of course, fellaini is a midielder. he's useful in only one system and one role: as the LCM in a 4-3-3. that's why he looks good for belgium and is a central player for a loaded nt. his ability to come late in the box for headers and tap ins is very disruptive for the defense but he has to start from a deeper position to maximize that skill. in short, he's useless as a 9 or 10.
