I can only go back to Sorensen, but I'd say it would be 1. Freidel 2. Guzan 3. Sorensen Guzan can pass Freidel though, but it'll take time. Guzan's 12-13 season was better than any season Freidel had for Villa, but Freidel was consistent for years.
What was so great about his performances that season? That season had that 8-0 loss to Chelsea right?
Defense was completely awful and midfield was complete crap. Offense was alright because Benteke, Weimann, and Agbonlahor had a good thing going between those three, but it was the goal keeping that kept Villa in matches. Guzan made so many highlight real saves that season and was rightfully voted player of the season despite Benteke scoring 20+ goals.
Guzan actually received praise for that game - he had a ton of great saves, including a penalty save.
Richards needed to hit a mid table club years ago. I think he'll do well for you guys. You're 100% correct. Gotta replace Benteke. Sherwood wants the Tottenham guy (confusing with Agbonlahor right now). I'd be wary of giving him too long of a deal. He has been able to get the best out of him though. He needs to be loved. He needs to be the man, and know he's the man. If Andy Carroll could stay healthy, he'd be one I could see being available. When healthy he's a one man wrecking crew.....for all of 5 games. I'd ask Juve about Llorente just to test the waters.
Villa's first game is against newly promoted Bournemouth this Saturday. It's away against a team with great confidence. I'd love to see Villa squash that. I wonder if Guzan will get the start. He is back with the club, but hasn't played 1 minute for Sherwood since that City game and I am including preseason games. Bunn has played every preseason game so far, so I wonder if Sherwood will stick with him.
the vast majority of posters on the AV fan sites say it's Guzan, but who knows? Tough position for big Brad, but he can overcome.
Wickham to Palace opens the door back up for Jozy!! Here's a little AV prediction/analysis piece I stumbled across http://www.astonvillanewsandviews.co.uk/what-has-pre-season-taught-us/
He was a backup for Blackburn and Norwich. Guzan got a vote of confidence from Sherwood after his attempts to sign a new keeper failed, so I don't think anyone on the current squad is a big threat to Brad. I'll be surprised if he doesn't start this weekend.
Ordinarily, it would be a surprise. But after all the confident predictions that Guzan would return as the #1 at the end of last season or for the FA Cup turned out to be dead wrong, I've come to expect that he won't be starting.
Apparently Sherwood said Guzan only asked for a week off, and has been back with the club for a little while now. Sherwood also said Guzan is almost season ready, so I wonder if that means he will go with Brad or just stick with Bunn? Villa has been having multiple practice scrimmages this week to get the team back to full fitness and so Sherwood could get a final evaluation. Have to think Guzan should be ready to go Saturday.
It has also been reported that Guzan was in the running for team captain (Micah Richards was chosen). Definitely time for the silly season to end and games to get back underway.
Can't complain about a clean sheet to start the season. Guzan was solid, other than his kicking, which was atrocious...
Sums up the game very well. Guzan is a fantastic keeper, but his distribution is literally hit or miss. If he can fix his distribution issues, Guzan would be one of the best in the league. He had a great play where he came out and grabbed a cross amidst a lot of players, then quickly threw it out, and a few seconds later Villa were in Bournemouth's penalty box.

Gonna be crickets on the Gameday thread unless Jozy gets shipped back to Sunderland or Adu signs with a top side in Andorra
Villa really held their own against United. United really don't have many chances at all. Their only goal was a bit of luck cause Januzaj's shot actually deflected perfectly into the corner. Without the deflection, it looked like it was going to hit Guzan dead center. Problem was Villa didn't create anything either. Really missing Benteke.
