Bayern are, without a doubt, the premier team in the league. I just think the characterization of the league as being so much less competitive than the other major European leagues is inaccurate. The gap between Real and Barca and the rest of La Liga was 12 and 14 points, respectively. Chelsea finished 17 points ahead of 4th place Man Utd, Bayern was 18 ahead of 4th place Leverkusen. Yes, Bayern historically wins the league about half the time over the past forty years or so, but,top to bottom the league is really no less competitive than the other major leagues.
This season will be good. Wolfsburg Leverkusen Schalke and Dortmund have improved. Bayern have gotten healthier.
Sadly, I no longer have to worry about what happens at the top of the table. Anyway, Green really should have been advocating for a loan. Sure, playing for Bayern is prestigious, but playing for their reserves, you're in the fourth tier of German football. In the Regionalliga, he will be playing against other teams' reserves, or much smaller semi-pro teams. I don't think getting to train with the big boys really makes up for that lack of competition.
Lemme see if I have this right; Last year Green was a spoiled, self-indulgent, unambitious chump for NOT playing in the reserves This year he is a spoiled, self-indulgent, unambitious chump FOR playing in the reserves He's called out as (more or less) cowardly here because of a perceived discomfort at leaving Munich, whereas when Landon Donovan signs with Bayer at 17, spends a bunch of time training in Florida, calls it quits in Germany to return to his home state at 19 in what, at the time, was a vastly inferior league, gives Germany another shot at 23, and bailing once again to return to his home state...how would we characterize that for LD?
Ive mentioned it a several times in the discussions here in this thread: When 19, Marco Reus played for a 2nd Buli relegation candidate but at least he played a whole 2nd Buli season for them. He didnt consider himself as "too good" for that. He played continuously through all his younger years. As for Greens development, these are two lost years.
Loan to a 2.Bundesliga club would have been ideal, but who knows maybe he has received some assurances from Pep and the coaching staff which we aren't aware of.
Boy, am I glad that you included this phrase. Some posters on here - not you - are making a habit of talking as though they know everything that goes on behind the scenes. Do they not realize that press leaks tend to be woefully incomplete, self-serving narratives?
Or maybe no one else had any real interest to have him. Of course the situation now is not the same as last season: back then he had to do what he was told to do, stick to the reserves. Now, he may have had other choices. But then, maybe he hadn't. PS: If you were a scout, and watched his last games for the USA, would you line up to loan the guy? Be honest.
Saw him in todays derby between 1860 II and Bayern II. Bayern got outplayed and was down to 10 after 40 minutes. End: 0:0. Green best player in a team that had like one chance in the whole game. Announcer said he has talked to Bayern's II coach Vogel quoting him: "Yes it is not an ideal situation. I can understand the argument that a loan to 2nd Buli club would be good."
Technically, isn't the third league not administered by the Bundesliga, but by the DFB, hence it's the3. Liga rather than 3. Bundesliga?
Green not to be seen in these highlights but they give a indication of the playing quality of 4th league football in Regionalliga Bayern. Bayern II is considered to have the 2nd best and 1860 II as the 3rd best squad. Bayern have only played 2 games and two points while Regensburg have right away won 4 of the first 4 games.
