So, so many posters are assuming the guarantee goes through 2018. But unless you've seen the contract, you don't know that. I wouldn't be surprised if the guarantee goes through 2015 or 2016, with the last 2 year's a USSF option.
Given Sunil's statements currently, and the history of the years long courtship, I 'd be shocked if the sly fox in the box didn't wangle a prenup with a clause guaranteeing he gets paid through 2018.
Think about what Sunil did with the extension. He made him the technical director too. Technical director is a longterm project. You don't make someone that with an eye to firing them 2-3 years in. Therefore, barring a collapse and not qualifying for 2018, it is hard to see why Gulati would pull the plug on the longterm project he has wanted to institute with the men's side since he took over.
We're definitely dealing with two different topics. What the fans feel should be done with Klinsmann as opposed to what Gulati will actually do. As a fan, I think it's time to move on. As a realist, I know that he's not going anywhere until July 2018 at the earliest, and even then it will most likely just be going higher up the food chain while resigning his managerial post.
When Brian Strauss did it, a large percentage of fans around these parts thought he fabricated the entire story. Ignorance is bliss.
There should have been meetings along these lines when Martin Vasquez was fired I bet. Or around the pre-World Cup camp. I heard for days that Landon might get cut... though the shock and inanity and disgrace of it actually happening took time to take hold. Sunil should have been very concerned and very involved at that point - and I think he froze. Now he's whistling in the graveyard. Klinnsman's World Cup squad was a travesty. We would have been better off, IMO, to give him some ultimatums then. If he walked, so be it. We have a lot of coaches who could have got a better US squad past the deeply flawed and flat Ghana and Portugal teams, and played better soccer. Funny thing, after this Gold Cup debacle... people suddenly appreciate chemistry and continuity in a soccer team? Not Jeurgen, mind you. Never shown any interest in it for our national team. Understandable perhaps from a narcissist.
JK talks too much then, when he doesnt follow through with what he says he contradicts himself, and everyone is confused and unhappy because he is not doing what he said the Donovan omission from the WC and how JK even treated/acted about that situation Wondo, keeps getting added playing players out of position (anyone can play L.FB) not trying a handful of players bad mouthing the MLS whatever JKs issue with Besler is -and issues with others losing to Jamaica losing to Panama not Winning / Runner up in the Gold Cup if we dont lose those last 2 games, then we can kind of forgive the other stuff how much blame goes to JK ? and how much to the players ? does a different HC change the performance of the players ?
I've been asking myself the same question. He obviously started a very unpopular team with the team. He obviously neglected some things all the players had been thinking and feeling during training. He clearly disregarded his veterans and their opinions. But he also lacks significant improvements along any lines. Besler/Gonzo, Yedlin / FJ as RB/RM combo? Cameron back to DM, Jozy in shape, which leaves the LB / LM. Bedoya as LM and Chandler at LB? NO. Break Shea as LB? NO. So LB remains the position we can't fill. Castillo, Shea, Garza...Ream did a good enough job, but we also seem to lose everytime he is on the pitch just about. Evans? No. I don't know any MLS LB, but it's time to find one with 1. recovery speed, 2. left cross. 3. can cover man on set piece. That's about it.
THere is rumor that Sunil will make Klinsmann Coach, Technical Director and hand over his own job of as President of USSF and partner up with Martin Vazques and become chief scout of Asia Minor.
Very true. Brian put all his meat on the grill and well, he lost the battle but won the war. He's doing some good work at SI opposite the original milk toast reporter, GW. Doyle at MLS soccer has been very critical of JK for not playing his weekly MLS man crush, but he is probably the closest to openly criticize JK for what turned out to be an absolutely terrible tournament for the US.
Klinsmann's issue with Besler is that Besler was the only player ballsy enough to speak up with Klinsmann was bashing MLS during the January camp and calling all the MLS guys lazy and out of shape. Vermes backed up Besler, which in my opinion, is the single solitary reason why Feilhaber can't get a sniff with the national team despite being in better form than pretty much every other US center mid in the pool the past two years. Note that Zusi only got 1 game at the Gold Cup. Fabian Johnson is the LB, end of discussion. The real issue has been trying to find the heir apparent to Steve Cherundolo on the right side. Chandler has been terrible. Evans is too pedestrian. Yedlin is too tactically naive to play there at the international level. Cameron is probably our best option at RB, but Klinsmann can't figure out where to play the on the rare occasions that he actually gets called into camp. The biggest issue though is that Klinsmann can't decide on a formation or style of play, meaning there is a revolving door in midfield (particularly wide midfield) that is hampering the development of the entire pool.
agree with most of this i wouldnt even mind a L.FB that just stays back allowing the R.FB to make runs up im fine with Garza or Shea, even tho Shea does make attacking runs then Fabian as the R.FB and no Chandler, ever id take Evans over Chandler every time
I guess/fear Mikey B. did us a noble disservice at this juncture, rallying the troops around the coach and against the media. Like the good soldier he was raised to be.
I'm not so sure that Bradley rallied the troops per se. He just wasn't reaching for the knife to stab Caesar with.
Klinsmann has a bigger bias against Benny F. I suspect he's just the kind of player who respects his own brain and opinion and such. Like Landon. Many fans don't recall or don't know that team Juergen has had their eye on Feilhaber since way back in his Euro club days. They just don't like him now and aren't interested in giving him a fair chance no matter how well he plays, and Benny knows it. ******** Klinnsman. Forgive my bolding of your quote, but this is exactly the opposite of the type of program and system Arena and Bradley used to get players comfortable in their roles and system, accustomed to each other, to develop confidence and chemistry and esprit de corps...and raise our game. Be unafraid to play teams better than us, and beat them. Yes, it could be too predictable, but over time and having earned success, the Arena and Bradley teams show evolution to a better style of play. People criminalize Bradley for losing that Gold Cup final in front of a hugely pro Mexican crowd, when we'd lost Cherundolo etc. They forget we played attacking soccer, went up a couple goals against a team that was WAY better than us that day, with a line-up that was largely faked. Bradley was trying to incorporate youth and get us to play better soccer, and that's partly why he paid the price. No one should forget he successfully deployed Freddy freakin' Adu in that game for crying out loud. Because the hand he had to play was so meager on the day.
According to JK and others, FJ was the best right back at the world cup. He was certainly very good. I don't know that we get the width with him at LB as he is always going central forcing Dempsey into either going outside or laterally or combo one touch play that is generally killed by Jozy/MB horrific first touch miscues. The Yedline/FB right side was extremely effective. I don't know why it was not continued. Bedoya is good enough at LM. Which leaves LB.
Garza is too slow. He is just not good enough. I can't believe in the entire lexicon of MSL defensive mediocrity there is not one less mediocre LB than all the rest? Lichaj is serviceable, but he's a far better RB.
The sum of the whole is greater than the individual parts. Meaning that even though Fabian might be the best right back in the pool, the lack of a serviceable option at the LB spot in his absence is an overall net loss. Geoff Cameron at RB and Fabian at LB is better than Fabian at RB and (insert anyone) at LB. Its worth it to sacrifice a little bit of FJ's effectiveness to maintain balance and strength at other spots on the field.
I suspect his issue with Feilhaber is probably his shitty attitude and work ethic in the past. Those are common knowledge and he's called him up to two camp cupcakes, yeah?
That's a whole other problem. Cameron at stoke is a very good RB. For the USMNT, he is not. The FB/Yed combo on the right is a top 5 right side for speed and finishing and crossing. We just need to have a left side that can keep the other team honest.
even better would be to find FBs (not chandler) so we can use Fabian as a mid id prefer garza/shea at L.FB and Fabian at R.FB over Fabian at L.FB and someone else at R.FB basically, 1 of the FB spots will be our weakest spot garza/shea evans/parkhurst so, to make this post on topic Jurgen is to blame hes had plenty of time to test ALL of the FBs that are available to find someone that works better
Gonna suck when we realize that no one works better. Hopefully Fabian at LB and Payne at RB in 2 years.
