I don't understand why Lebron James won this award over Carli Lloyd. She probably had one of the greatest performances in US History and she gets snubbed by a man who lost the NBA Championship?
Keep in mind that ESPN is a network which often times prefers to show Poker tournament reruns instead of Women's World Cup qualifying games. Let's face it: Even on the International level, women's sports still take a back seat to tiddly-winks in the public consciousness. You might as well have nominated the best Curling olympic performance ever.
Cool down. The USWNT won the best team award. That's hardly a back seat. Lloyd's game was the greatest game in a finals that any man or woman has ever played. But, give LeBron some credit. He had stats for a final against the eventual champion over six games that nearly led to him getting the MVP on a losing team. Do you know how rare that is? Bobby Richardson (Yankees 1960), Jerry West (Lakers 1969), Chuck Howley (Cowboys 1971), Ron Hextall (Flyers 1987) and Sun Wen (1999) are the only ones I can recall.
http://www.3news.co.nz/sport/video-...onal-speech-at-espys-2015071614#axzz3g45e40GA Welp, looks like Lloyd got a ton of backlash for being on her phone during the time that football man shed tears over his daughter's cancer. sponsors are already leaving her.....
I'll give her the benefit of doubt but Lloyd needs to realize she's under microscope for a while at least. The public can turn on a dime with you. One minute you are an "America's Sweetheart", next minute you are an arrogant b****. Sitting in the front row next to Steph Curry, you are going to be shown.
Maybe she was texting someone that the speech was emotional and she had empathy for the speaker. If so, she should tweet the text.
It could have been almost anything. It could have been a text to her agent/accountant : "Make sure you get that check mailed out to the Cincinnati Children's Hospital first thing in the morning!" People are getting their panties in a knot about almost nothing here.
Carli got a World Cup gold medal, a golden ball, a sliver boot. LeBron got an award from a tv station, after not winning the mvp for the nba finals. I think carli is probably ok with that.
Especially if she makes the eight figures in endorsements that I saw one publication speculate she might earn. She and LeBron should do a next-generation "anything you can do I can do better" Gatorade ad like the one Jordan and Hamm did in '99. Can LeBron handle being taken down like Jordan was?
Nominations came out June 24, a little early to include Carli. Of course, the WWC will be an afterthought this time next year.
With all respect to Carli and her effort -- there were other players on that team that could have carried the load in the knockout rounds. If you look at the Cavaliers line-up -- after the other star on the team broke his leg -- there was nobody else to get points and shoulder the team. What LeBron James did in the NBA finals was stuff you only see in high school, where one guy is able to score all the points and still lead his team to victory no matter the other four players on his team shoot. The offense was designed to use all 24 seconds on the clock so the game would slow down to a crawl... and it worked. Golden State had to work their butts off to defeat a one man team. This is something that can happen for one game or another during a regular season... but there is no way it can work in a 4 of 7 NBA Finals. LeBron was the team...it was the most incredible performance you will ever see in basketball. I'm a bigger fan of women's soccer than the NBA -- but truth is truth.
Carli's knockout rounds and final were absolutely spectacular. Lebron's Finals performance without Kyrie and Love was nearly superhuman.
Cthulhu, thanks for naming the Cav's players who got hurt so Lebron had to go Fantastic Four style. It's not like I care about the NBA to know the supporting players (anymore).
With all due respect, the NBA Finals are at least on par in the US and are bigger globally than the WWC. Regardless, that's not the only metric. Regardless, part II: her performance didn't begin until after the nominating process had closed, so this is 10000% moot.
10000% right. The USWNT overall performance had, however, which is why I assume they were able to win the team award.
The ESPY's is all about promoting ESPN and the exposure. The awards are not to be taken seriously at all. Example ... Mo'ne Davis winning breakout athlete of the year over Odel Beckham and Jordan Spieth. She also won female athlete of the year last year over Serena Williams. Who can take a vote like that seriously and with any credibility at all. That is not even diving into the odd choice of Jenner bartering ... I mean "winning" the Arthur Ashe Courage award.
The leaked reports that Jenner's reps wanted the award in return for promotion of ESPN on the new show and also for the exclusive Dianne Sawyer interview. That report doesn't even address the shameless attention grab of ESPN to give the award to someone who hasn't been in an athletic competition since 1976. Expect a big drop in the standards of ESPN ... they are losing a lot of talent to other networks.
I see. Yeah, ESPN is turning into a weird beast, though their 30 for 30 series remains ridiculously good. Maybe they'll end up going back to their roots, when you could see AFL Premiership Footy on a regular basis along with the Brazilian Paulista League.
