But arent Dempsey and Torres from the same place in Texas or grow up together or something?

After spending seven months on the sidelines, Jose Torres made his way back to the field for Tigres UANL on Wednesday.

Playing in his first game since Dec. 15, 2014 and since having surgery for a herniated disk a month later, Torres started in the Liga MX side's 2-1 loss to Brazil's Internacional in the first leg of their Copa Libertadores semifinals series. The 27-year-old Torres was deployed at left back in the match, and he went the distance at Estadio Beira-Rio in Porto Alegre.

ballsy move by the coach to play a guy who hasn't played in so long in a position that isn't his preferred...in a semi-final!

On the road too. Hopefully he's becoming a veteran in the squad now and even transition into a Brad Evans role that now exists at Seattle.

I would like to see Torres integrated back into the U.S. Squad if he plays consistently this year. I for one think he is much better then Corona. Same goes for Castillo over Garza for that matter.

it's interesting, i see castillo as undersized, light weight, and extremely quick. he's a terror going forward and a decent defender. garza, on the other hand, is undersized but sturdy, strong but not blessed with elite (or even great) speed, but above average in the back and average going forward. you sort of have to pick your poison with the two.

i honestly can't see torres with much of a career at left back. he's as small or smaller than those two, slower than garza. his touch and passing are pretty good, but can anyone vouch for his defending? he has a hell of a left foot, but it won't do much if he's on his heels constantly, or huffing and puffing up the touchline all game.

2011-12 it was Jose Torres on the teamsheet for the US, one of the first names.

Klinnsmann has picked more athletic players who can run and cover the park. Torres coming back would mean another tactical shift.

Impressive that his career has him in the midfield for such an important club.

It is more about how the game is played in MX vs. for the NT. Tigres doesn't expose his flaws because they play a very tight, controlled/short passing game, that fits him perfectly. For the NT though, he gets the opposite.

I still think he may have a chance...but he would have to come bac kwith a bang. He would be looked at as Mix's sub/replacement if he's not doing well. Do I think he's better than mix? I dunno... especially after this GC so far...

Does it? He's been out for a long time. Was Tigres as big a deal when he was playing in midfield for them?

Tigres has always been a big deal. The fact that he was out for 6 months and Tigres brought so many new good players and still mange to go 90 minutes in probably one of the biggest games Tigres has ever played is impressive. Now, he was pretty terrible the first half, maybe the worse player for Tigres so I was expecting Tuca to take him out at half time. However, he did much better in the second half.

    1. Tigres is up 2-0 at halftime
    2. Torres is playing on the left (I think LWB)
    3. It says 'Gringo' on the back of Torres's jersey

    Right on both aspects.

The Gringo is SICK. Makes me want that jersey.

    AMAZING feat by Tigres.

He indeed does have the ability to make history here. Keep in mind though, he would not be the first american to win the libertadores if it happens (Renato Corsi did it with Arg. Juniors in 1985).

And because they are NOT a CONMEBOL side, even if Tigres win overall, River Plate will go on to represent CONMEBOL in the WC of clubs.

The way it's going to work is because Tigres is from Mexico, the first game will be there. Second game will be in Argentina so the cup can be presented to the champion in South America.

I will be rooting for them!! I see River getting help from the refs though....

Great trivia question -- never heard of him

    &

That's nuts, MX could make up half the semi finalists at the WCC. What a shame it'd be for conmebol. Always assumed the higher ranking South American side took the spot.

Great for gringo torres, but unfortunately will go to the bench once torres nilo returns from international duty. If he impresses enough in these next few games, perhaps he can keep the starting role

Gringo Torres went the full 90 yesterday in a loss by Tigres to Toluca. I am sure it's due to the bigger match during midweek vs River Plate.
