Congratulations west coast, you are the lucky winners in this year's NUFC pre-season tour! July 14th: Newcastle United v Club Atlas Milwaukee, Wisconsin July 18th: Sacramento Republic v Newcastle United Sacramento, California July 21st: Portland Timbers v Newcastle United Portland, Oregon Now this is a pleasant surprise! NUFC Pre-season Tour
Portland is an MLS squad. They're not top of the table, but they have one of the best crowds in MLS. Probably will sell out the friendly. Thx, Jay! Edit: I just saw on the NUFC.com website that it's the Portland Timbers 2 squad. Nevermind. They are like division three here.
To paraphrase Uncle Clint, 'A club's got to know their limitations.' Perhaps we'll find our level in that game. Perhaps not?
Possibly. The last tour here they lost 1-0 to Orlando and then went on to reach 5th in the league. I will take that again.
You can get tickets today for Sacramento - one day before sale to the general public. The Newcastle supporters section is Endzone-D. Buy tickets via Sac Republic website. The promo code is: NUFC
Supposedly Portland will put a mix of senior and reserve players, a la a typical MLS friendly. I'm taking my two older sons to that game. Oh, and hello again fellas.
Hers the match report from a Sac Republic FC supporter: Yes, you got the 0-1 win but Sacramento kept Newcastle keepers far busier than our keeper. Krul had to make maybe 5-6 full stretch saves and whoever your backup keeper is had work to do as well, while our own keepers only had to deal with handling a few tricky crosses. An own goal gave you your own only serious chance on goal. An unlucky red card put you down to 10 men. Both sides handled the incident very well. Newcastle had the vast edge in athleticism, but your front line was strangely held in check by far less athletic Sacramento defenders. Our attacking play was superior. I'm sure going into the game Newcastle must have been thinking wtf? We've got a tiny "stadium" of only 12,000 and the facility housed within the confines of a campy state fair, which is going on right now. Ferris wheels turning, people milling about everywhere with their cotton candy and churros and fireworks going off during the game. And of course the indignity of playing an American third division club that didn't even exist two years ago, albeit now the reigning national champion. Surely they had heard we soundly beat Sunderland earlier in the week, but it had to be a freak result, right? Wrong. Anyway, it was a good workout for both clubs, but Sacramento played better football and can feel a bit cheated by luck.
If it's anything like the previous matches, Portland will be more than ready. I think I only saw two shots that were almost full strength during the Sacramento game, and both directly at their keeper. It was more exciting to see Krul make a couple of great saves. It was a fantastic experience, though. I will go again, if I get the chance.
So, now that it's over. How many of us got to the games? I was in Sacramento myself. I may have met you - probably not, though.
I really wanted to but was unable as I have been in England. My good friend flew out for the Sacramento game though. If you saw a small bald Geordie running around, that was him.
