Catching up: May 31st, 2015 Honduras 2-0 El Salvador RFK Stadium, Washington, DC Attendance: ----- nevermind, that was the 2012 match.
I didn't hear anything about this match leading up to it outside of a brief mention on the Soccer Insider and of course these threads (I'm not sure if maybe promoters were busy with something else or something). Sadly, I'm used to these games not receiving even a single mention from English language mainstream local media. (The only time I recall Steve Goff going to an ES match was when they played Argentina at FedEx Field. Every report leading up to the game was complaints as was everything after especially when Messi didn't play). I didn't even hear promotions on Spanish language radio or television. I normally see a bunch of updates and tweets during the game at the very least. I occasionally go and then get the ******** out before anything goes down. I drove by RFK Sunday afternoon and had no idea there was a game. It was really telling when a coworker of mine (family from El Salvador) who is married to another coworker (family from Honduras) asked me about the game days later since he hadn't heard anything. I'm writing all of this because...
UGH! For someone that has been trying to get people to go to MLS games since 96, this is a dagger in the back! I went to a friendly like this a few years back, NEVER AGAIN!!! It was Real Madrid vs LA Galaxy at the Coliseum, where 90% of the crowd was going for Real! It was an ugly reminder of how artificial people can be. 92,000! DAMN! That's crazy!?! Too bad that won't translate into any sustained popularity for MLS. These friendlies are nothing more than a cash grab to fleece euro fans.
How is rooting for Madrid artificial? There's no rule that says you have to like inferior soccer just because it's local
The one thing I learned that day is that there are no rules whatsoever, except that Americans want to cheer for the best. Someone in another thread mentioned how people want to witness greatness when I mentioned the horse racing, and I think he was dead on. Be it, for a lack of general stimulation in their own lives or wanting to seem knowledgeable when part of the water cooler talk, people grab onto these things to make themselves feel better. In this self-serving, me-me-me culture, things like team loyalty, city pride and self sacrifice are archaic concepts of a forgotten age, much discussed but rarely demonstrated. Furthermore, people that do display these virtues are often derided, much like MLS fans often are amongst general soccer fans. None of that surprises me, although the sheer amount of people willing to pay $75 a head for a meaningless mid-season friendly to see European players of vacation, whilst totally ignoring MLS even exists, is a clear indictment on how strong the thirst for glory really is. Like I said, I went once, and never again. Not only did that game make me lose hope for the Galaxy and MLS, it made me lose hope for all humanity.
