New York Cosmos and Rowdies to renew one of the biggest US soccer rivalries Saturday

    http://worldsoccertalk.com/2015/04/...-of-the-biggest-us-soccer-rivalries-saturday/

When New York hosts Tampa Bay with the opportunity to claim an inside track on the 2015 NASL Spring Championship on the line Saturday, former players, older fans and former staff from all over the country who have lived through this epic series will have their eyes firmly on the latest incarnation of one of the biggest rivalries in US professional soccer history.

Never realized they had a rivalry. I thought Tampa's only rival was the Strikers.

12,550 the number announced over the PA here. Biggest crowd yet. Great entertaining performance as well.

Well, historically the two clubs did have some very memorable clashes in the 70's and some bad blood in those days. If you ask Cosmos fans who they dislike the most, Tampa Bay usually comes up at the top for the NASL sides. I admit, it isn't Boca v River or anything, but when they refer to the rivalry they are mostly talking about the 70's during a time they were very much hated rivals.

Shep talks about the start of the rivalry:

Cosmos beat Rowdies in Soccer Bowl '78 at Giants Stadium

Then the 2013 meeting, the first in 30 years or so...a memorable match and some fan confrontations in the stands.

A story that has been making the rounds earlier today and discussed on Soccer Morning...

Traffic Sports in discussions to sell stake in RailHawks
Speaking to WRALSportsFan.com last week from the CONCACAF Congress in the Bahamas, Davidson confirmed negotiations are taking place regarding the possible sale of Traffic Sports’ interest in Estoril and the Carolina RailHawks.
“These discussions are real,” Davidson said. “In this case, a foreign partner looked at our Portuguese team and understood that we have the U.S. team [the RailHawks] and got interested in both.”

I saw on twitter that the Strikers bought the contract for one of the new Brazilian players from Corinthias and signed him to a "multi year deal".

    Tampa Bay, first off.

And, yes, it was quite the rivalry back in the day. It was very one-sided in New York(ish), where the Rowdies only won once, ever, and that was in a shootout. Things were much closer in Tampa and they had some memorable tilts over the years.

I'd say the Strikers were the primary rival because of proximity and because they played each other more often in the 1977-83 time period, and in some memorable playoff games. The Cosmos were always a glamour game that was often on TV. In the NASL regular season, the Rowdies beat the Strikers more often than not until things went sideways for Tampa Bay in 1982 and they lost the last five to them.

NASL needs to do something soon. They can't be having this many markets jumping ship or looking to jump ship.

Almost every team would want to be in MLS, but wanting and getting there are not the same.

I don't see it as a bad thing. It means the NASL is bringing in quality clubs, and quality owners. It brings prestige to the league, making it more attractive.

The only thing that will stop clubs leaving for MLS is for MLS to stop expanding.

    this. a 1000000000%

So MLS currently at 23 (w/ LAFC, MinnU, and ATL)...let's assume 25 w/ Miami and Sacramento. 5 more til they get to 30. I would think that MLS would stop for a very very very long time at 30 and just chill. With Indy, SA and now TB on the potential list, could be a scary sight for NASL. The only question is.....is the 100 mil price tag (likely to go up and up) worth it? Yes, rich investors are out there, but will the value of MLS as a whole talk its price tag? Already enticed one NASL team, more could follow.

Hey I'm fine with that. I honestly believe if that where to happen we'd have one of the better rivalries.

This might be true, but didn't expect NASL teams to respond so quickly after Garber said they are exploring expanding past 24.

Now that the cat is out of the bag that all of these NASL teams (big market teams that is) want to go up...NASL should focus on markets that would never go MLS, but still bring in decent numbers etc.

Hartford is a great option IMO, glad they are "supposedly" going there...

    -Wichita
    -Omaha
    -Fort Worth
    - Birmingham
    -Albuquerque
    etc etc etc...

Because I do see poaching as a potential issue, who wants to see their best franchises go. I think having a mixture with New York Cosmo types teams and the ones I just mentioned, would make for a safe league.
