I'm going to miss the next two home games while on vacation...

    I wonder if they'll have
    - the electronic ad boards up
    - the Devotion Wall up

Any update on the plexiglass replacements for the railings?

The field level electronic ad boards will likely be up by the upcoming home game.

No specific date or game had yet been given for either the Devotion Wall or the plexiglass replacements, though.

I was wondering why they didn't have electronic ad boards at field level...
    What is a Devotion Wall?

The devotion wall was supposed to be installed before the start of the season as per Dave K but I guess it's coming up late. The season ticket holders who renewed before the deadline got the chance to put their name(s) up on there. Kinda like putting up handprints on the cement to speak. (Better than signing the beam--from what I heard it was painted over).

haha--or was the other devotion wall being the blotter list on the SJPD (inside joke :D )

Might be a bad joke considering what's happened the last few days. I think SJPD jokes are off limit for a bit while :)

Are you serious?? Why wouldn't they either not paint the beam or have people sign the beam after it was painted?

Man with this team it's all about putting on a public show, who cares about doing what's right, just get a bit of positive PR (see also the "GO EQ" prize winner).....

Very true with that one--didn't mean any miscontent. :) I was alluding to a post the Ultras made on another site--their take on the devotion wall being the cops list but only in jest--I hang with those guys for the most part so it's tongue in cheek. There are a few people in the Ultras I know who work in law enforcement-and they feel the same way about the recent events. They tend to go anti-commercial mostly (which is fine).

The devotion wall is a nice tribute so looking forward to the names etched in marble or stone. I go to AT&T Park and see the tribute in brick or ball/bat form. The bricks should have been considered for Avaya since that's commonplace in many ballparks. That idea was tossed around as far as 2005 if I remember with SSV.

I hate to say it but yes. In hindsight a bit of a PR move.

The one at the NE section was painted over when I chatted with one of the Quakes people not so long ago--I was a bit surprised when they mentioned that because I wanted to see what was written on there (hard to believe that was close to a year ago to this day).

It was probably a treatment for the elements. It's typical of outdoor structures like that. More of the significance, but there's no way the first beam would be exposed as is. They could alternately have people sign the beam after it's been installed and painted, but by then the stadium would already be mostly built so defeats the purpose/symbology.

Omfg... I thought the original guy who cracked the code was the one who was announced the winner? What the hell?? They gave the prize to some other random person who correctly submitted it? WOW.

Yeah, another ClusterF by the front office. For months they "unofficially" advertised this contest. What the hell did they expect?

Geezus. We're not talking about giving away a family pack of tickets or free hot dogs... The prize was a ticket to the World Cup! That's a huge value, crazy.

Sorry, I was referring to the FO, not the person who won. Meaning it was likely to be solved prior to the official start of the contest, turning it into a race of who gets the answer in first rather than a contest of who solves it first.

I posted a question on a message board where skydivers hand out - dropzone.com - and got a response from one of the FastTrax members. You can see the full response here.

    Really, or is someone confused?

    Interesting info, though!

They could have made some practice jumps into the area during construction I guess. In any case, it does answer some questions and also shows that maybe the location, being so close to the airport, is not quite as restrictive as many (including me) might have thought.

I seriously doubt that. He was probably thinking of Stanford Stadium.

Yes, especially as people were saying all along that there would be no fireworks or jumps into Avaya.

From a clueless observer perspective, that jump looked much trickier than the ones into Stanford, not because of the planes but because of the winds. Seems that the location is more likely to get cross-drafts, and from my seat it appeared that at least one of the guys barely cleared the roof.

I was at the Lobina when they came in and I thought those that actually made it into the stadium did it just fine, but, "barely cleared" could be a relative term to them.

Hard to believe anyone got the stadiums confused, especially if the person speaking was one of the people actually doing the jumps (although there is no indication that the person speaking actually did the jumping).

Can you ask him about jumping into the stadium several times over the past couple of years, since there really wasn't a stadium there a year or so ago.

No reason to think the first guy we heard about was the first one to decode it. It was a pretty simple code after all. So, they followed their contest rules, which is good, but you needed to be one of the first to see the announcement via facebook or twitter. The contest was over in minutes.

Either way, the guy we heard about was probably screwed. You can't expect them to call off the contest because someone solves it early. They wanted to generate some interest for their money, which is why they didn't announce a winner for a couple weeks.

They should have covered the area with the red seats, and they should have had a better code.

But it's not like they didn't announce the contest early on. They did. It's how we and everyone else knew about it. It's how that guy solved the code early on. He was the first one anyone knew about. The only thing we could fault him with is he just shot an email instead of calling them up and talking to them. Just botched by the FO, considering how simple it was to crack the code anyways.

He said he did finally get a "marketing VP" on the phone, but was told that he would have to enter the contest when it was announced, like everyone else. Perhaps the late starting time was to give more people a chance to see the seats. The challenge was supposed to be decoding, not getting to see the seats. What's funny was that they invited people to take a tour to solve it, but anyone who waited for that had already lost.

This is another in the category of "if you are going to do it, do it right." Nobody would have cared if there was never a contest. It's announcing it without thinking it through that's the problem.
