Parreira subbed Rai in the last match of group stage because he felt the midfield needed more pace and Rai was a bit to slow. I remember this was discussed by pundits and reporters during the WC94 Why else do you think he was benched for the rest of the tournament. He wasn't injured or sick. His pace held up the midfield. Parreira needed a midfield who could feed Romario up front, but Rai was not delivering it. I am not saying Rai wasn't good in the group stages, but he was doing his Sao Paolo performance either. Good captain, but a bit to slow like a snail/turle in the middle. Dunga was also slow, but at least Dunga made some long passes (including assists vs Cameroon) and defended harder then Rai. Hence, why the captaincy was turned over to Dunga and Rai benched.
