New York Cosmos: ? New York Red Bull: 7,800 (2012) anyone has recent numbers? New York City FC: nearing 12,000 season tickets, passed 11,000 back on November 13, could they hit 15,000+ by opening day? source: http://forums.bigsoccer.com/threads/new-and-improved-season-ticket-holder-count.1944405/ New and improved Season Ticket Holder Count
Cosmos are likely feeling the effects of their stadium delay. Expectation was that they would at least have a deal in place. NYRB and NYCFC also have a major presence on two of the major Sportnetworks in NYC Metro MSG and YES. Cosmos have a nice deal with OneWorld but it is not a NYC network where sports fans can easily have access to. Even if OneWorld could make a deal with to have its Broadcasts on an extended Network like WWOR along with other Cosmos programming it would be in the mainstream NYC Network. JMO
Im pretty sure I said the Cosmos may be feeling the effect of not having a stadium in place. Hofstra serving as a temp site was ok for a bit. However now with the delays on getting the OK for the Elmont site is something they have not been prepared for as of yet.
I'm assuming the Cosmos season ticket holder count is very low. The incentive is limited as you can purchase tickets on game day. The difference with NYCFC and NYRB is that they do have some ticket scarcity, and you can also pick the better seats. The Cosmos should pick up rather significantly if they do move to a better venue.
That 12,000 is questionable... A good chunk of that is Yankee purchase for corporate giveaway. Of course I think The Don was quoted during the MLS State of League at 20.000.
No, that was TFC's Tim Lieweke speaking at some event and he had the number wrong, as they clarified it soon after.
Not to belabor the point but: MLS State of the League Address: Crib Notes By Eugene Rupinski@GolazodelGringo on Dec 3 2014, 10:00a DG: We believe we have an LAFC "stadium solution" and confident in stadium opportunity. Have multiple options. When made decision about NY, we weren't just confident, we were at agreement level on a particular site (note: I'm not sure what that even means). We lost that site. This is not an exact science. Can't say what you say today will set a precedent for tomorrow (note: I'm pretty sure that's actually the exact definition of a "precedent"). NYCFC is committed to it, focused on it, working on it. Almost 20K season tix sold (note: I didn't actually see DG physically pull these numbers out of his ass). We failed before in Miami. We folded a team. We folded a team in Tampa. Orlando is different, but we're not going back to Miami with out a stadium. GL: There were only 11k season tickets sold for NYCFC, not 20k DG: Don't let the facts get in the way of a good story. (note: If one quote sums it all up, it's this one. By this time, I'm just glad it's over with. The awful Skrillex music is back with the terrible headache-inducing commercial for the Cup Final. I need to go lie down.) And there's video... Hey but maybe he got his numbers from Tim Lieweke. http://www.brotherlygame.com/2014/12/3/7323915/mls-state-of-the-league-address-crib-notes
And many (most) others are first timers stadium folks or people who were going to friendlies between big teams in the Big Apple and now they've got season tickets because their new team got Villa and Lampard... oh wait...
Dave Martinez had something to say gear ding those folks in particular... Lampardgate: Where are MLS and New York City FC? EDITORIAL - So let me get this straight — the opinions of U.S. Men’s National Team coach Jurgen Klinsmann were so severe that Don Garber had to field an embarrassing impromptu press call to address the situation, but no one is coming forward to clarify this New York City FC Frank Lamparddebacle? If ever there was a time for Garber to demonstrate his promise of transparency, this is it. We are now on the third day of Lampardgate, and all anyone can come up with is conjecture and secondary reporting to explain the entire mess. By now, it is almost an accepted fact that Lampard never had a contract with New York City FC. That, in turn, means Lampard never had a contract with Major League Soccer. That means both NYCFC and MLS have lied to us. All of us. http://www.empireofsoccer.com/lampardgate-where-york-31195/
I don't actually believe that is a legit figure in terms of actual fans buying tickets, i know for a fact a few large ticket brokers speculated early in the sales and grabbed a lot fo tickets, which cooled off quickly after the controversy really started to heat up...they have only "officially" stated an extra 3K in sales the past several months leading into the start of the season which you'd think would be when they hit a bump in sales. Back in 2010 the Red Bull had a similar situation, they sold a lot of season tickets but we all discovered later a large % were speculators trying to cash in on the new stadium...the result was a ton of no-show TV side midfield seats through out the season. One thing is for sure, the premium for simply being in MLS is worth an extra 6-10K season tickets sold, because the Red Bulls and Man City USA sure aren't offering much substance to fans otherwise. Makes me wonder how many tickets Cosmos would have sold if they went to MLS...i'd wager a substantial amount more than these other clowns. No idea where Cosmos are at, i know they were around 3000 ST last year, according to the reps (not that you can ever believe what they say) they are well ahead of last year's figures..so maybe 5000?? That wouldn't be terrible.
Lol If they had 300 last season I would be surprised. It would be nice to see 5000 this year, but don't get your hopes up.
Considering you are the guy that thinks NYCFC sales aren't inflated by brokers and speculators I don't believe you are much of an authority on guessing numbers either. They had 3000 last year and change, after signing a Raul and hiring a actual marketing and pr guy (didn't have one most of last season) I think getting close to 5000 is a good goal for them. Even if they don't as long as they are trending up then it's all good
Honestly, what is the point of this thread here at the Cosmos forum. There is no way the Cosmos are gonna have more season ticket holders than eigther of the MLS teams. As long as the Cosmos are doing well in average attendance I couldn't care less if the other two are selling out each game, good for them. IMHO as an organization the Cosmos need to take it one step at a time building a solid foundation and not worry about what goes on elsewhere. This is wishful thinking but if the Cosmos have an average of 8 K and continue to improve, who cares what everyone else is doing. Plus let's compare oranges to oranges NASL vs NASL for attendance, on the field is a different story.
Never said they were not inflated but that is irellevant to my point that the Cosmos had an extremely small season ticket holder base last season. The Cosmos drew an announced 3,091 as a low last year, and had several other matches in the 3k range. So unless they sold virtually zero seats those matches, I can assure you they did not have "3000 last year and change". Do you have a source claiming they did? With the signing of Raul and the hopefully improved marketing and operations, they almost definitely have grown their base. Let's hope the growth has been huge and they can maintain the big crowds they will likely see for the first game for the entire season. Shuart is not a great venue, and it is just horrible when they draw paltry crowds. However when they draw 8k it actually makes the club look more like the respectable and legendary club they try to portay themselves as, as opposed to the minor-league club many view them as.
