I believe our depth outside back defenders are Neeskens or move O'Neil out. Really on paper it looks worse then our CB depth last year.

there's no way a responsible club starts the season with this scenario....oh wait, this is the Rapids we are talking about. Maybe they are still looking for the right piece, maybe its one of the two trialist's in camp, maybe zen Pablo doesn't even think about field positions in the same socio-rigid patriarchal oppressive western imperialist mindset that we do, who knows. I'll feel a lot better when we get that depth there though, I do not want Shane wasted on RB again.

I'm actually in the middle of an email chain right now, and C38 leadership is working with the club to finalize the details.

We're coordinating dates with the Rapids' "Lads Night Out" promotions so that they can put those people next to us. We're getting the dates finalized as well as the sections we want to move to (we may try a couple of different sections just to see what happens).

I can post the info once we get everything locked in. If you're feeling adventurous, come join us!

I have a work colleague in the UK who is a huge Wolves fan. I asked him his take on why Kevin Doyle has fallen out of favor and here is his response:

KD… Ask me an easy one why don’t you!

As you probably know Wolves became the first ever team to suffer back-to-back relegation from premiership to championship to league 1. Wolves were beaten up in the Prem for 2 years, chewed up and spat out. Relegated to Champ they went into free-fall. Arguably unlucky to the double, but they did.

Club, fans, players, manager, the whole relationship went bad.

KD was part of that squad. I believe a sub-set of key players like KD were expected to do better. They didn’t.

Kenny Jacket came in as new manager. Result… Wolves got promoted from League one scoring 3rd / 4th highest total of points in all history. And we are on the edge for Champ play-offs for the Prem again this season.

Football is a team game. KD is a great player. But he was dragged down by a team that had fallen apart. When KJ pulled them together KD was out of sorts and that meant he lost his place. As a highly paid member of squad, economics took over.

Before KJ there were clearly politics at the club. And Wolves was in L1 paying premiership wages from a low-income. KJ told a set of players who were out of form (I assume in their heads) they had to go = economics and not fitting with how the squad was now working. He encouraged them to set their stalls out, gave them chance to go and raise profiles, score goals. KD did not appear to gel, and was expensive, so like several others he was encouraged to go elsewhere on loan and re-build a reputation… and get signed elsewhere.

Here's an answer to our concerns about defense:

I've liked Hairston's ability to track back from a wing position much, much better than Serna. It seemed a little more natural. It seemed like Marlon had an idea of what angles to take, what space to fill, and generally defended on and off the ball pretty well. I like what Marlon brings to the table and if playing RB (and playing it effectively) is what gets him on the field than I'm okay with him transitioning. I'm not 100% certain but I think Marlon played a few games at RB for Louisville (God, this UK alum hates to even write that shitty name) when Andrew Ferrell shifted over to CB. I vaguely, vaguely remember hearing or reading that during his MLS combine.

Although my initial sentiment about this move is represented in Jason's pic, there may at least a couple reasons for the team considering this: a. Marlan wants to get on the field and midfield positions are pretty crowded right now, b. coaches are looking to get a little more speed and attacking prowess on the outside of the back line. Still, a conversion like this leads me to believe they don't have a good answer for their needs on defense.

Oh, no doubt about that!! That was my first thought, too. I was thinking this is their way of find the cheapest, most efficient in-house solution. That's not always a bad thing but not always a good thing, either. I was trying to think a little objectively and try to rationalize (with myself) what Marlon could bring as a RB. We shall see....................

That's my issue with it. Its the same thought process that brought us O'Neill at RB and Watts at CB. how about we actually construct a roster with depth instead of trying to convert players?

That irks me, too. However, that's not just a problem limited to the Rapids. I think it's a general problem within MLS. To me, that's correlated to roster limits, the low salary cap, and a single entity structure. It makes it extremely difficult to build depth in all positions. Therefore, coaches and clubs are forced (may be a strong word) to convert players. In the Rapids case, though, it's often been due to lack of preparation and a fly by the seat of your pants mentality.

Kimura is done. He was pretty terrible in NY and is passed his expiration date. I hate to admit that as he's one of my former Rapids favorites. I think has signed or is signing with a team in the lower leagues of Japan. If you are talking about Ike Opara at Sporting KC we never had a shot at getting him. He was traded from San Jose as a redirect replacement for Collin when negotiations, in the middle of last season, went sour. On top of it all, Ike is a CB. If you talking about Kofi Opare -- now he is a RB/CB but the same rings true again. We had no shot at him given he was traded to mid-season from LA to DCU for allocation money and a 2nd round pick.

The guy we've been using at RB?? That's Marc Burch -- a well seasoned and fairly well respected defender. Although, LB is his preferred position.

Didn't Hairston talk last preseason when he first came in about potentially playing right back? Or the club talking about him being an option there early on when he first came in?

I could see it if this were a longer term developmental move. But I guess like everyone, I hope this isn't some hack move just to make the depth chart look deeper. If they think he has talent, they should let him develop it and not move him around a lot.

Posted this in the preseason thread but since the discussion is going on here I guess I'll post it here as well. Francisco Flores is a 21 year old right back which should help with our depth back there.

To those smarter than I.....if they bring in this Flores kid I assume he takes an international spot. Given the potential signings of Ramirez and Doyle, how does our international slot situation look?

8 spots available, 5 signed right now (Sjoberg, Pittinari, Brown, Eloundou, Torres). One unsigned draftee would need a spot (Badji). Flores, Ramirez, and Doyle would then be 9 total. Though good chance in this scenario that at least one of Sjoberg, Eloundo, and Badji ends up in Charlotte for the season and not counting against our numbers. Or better odds that Badji doesn't even make the team.

I need to head over to the Yanks Abroad thread (my home away from the Rapids threads) and poke around. His name is very, very familiar and he could be one of the many Mex-Am players floating around. Stay tuned. I know there are several with the last name Flores.

This Flores is in fact strictly Mexican. He was born in Mexico City and lots of playing experience with the Mexican youth national teams.

He was a starter for the 2011 Mexican U-17 World Cup champions and part of the 2013 Mexican U-20 World Cup team. He has seven senior appearances for Cruz Azul...

I have to say, on paper, this appears to be a pretty impressive trialist. Dare I say a potential quality move by the front office
