Major League Soccer telecasts have averaged a 0.2 U.S. rating and 317,000 viewers on ESPN and ESPN2 so far this season, up a tick in ratings and 51% in viewership from last year (0.1, 210K). The games have averaged an additional 24,000 viewers on ESPN Deportes, up 20% from last year (20K). Meanwhile, NBCSN has averaged 150,000 viewers for its MLS coverage this season, up 46% from last year (106K). (ESPN, NBC Sports) The combined ratings on ESPN network for MLS games have been around 341K viewers which is pretty decent number (including Deportes). I would like to see how MLS performs during the playoffs, and starting next year when it will have a destination TV spot on ESPN and FOX1. I

MLS PR office can spin the numbers all they want, but the truth is there has been no real growth in MLS TV ratings. If you exclude the All-Star Game against Bayern Munich, MLS regular season games on ESPN and ESPN2 are averaging only 267,000 viewers this season, which is lower than what they averaged in four of the seven previous years. There has been no real pattern to MLS TV ratings over the years other than the fact that they have been consistently low.
^True...there was no World Cup bounce at all, and piggybacking on the Premier League doesn't seem to have provided any boost either.
It seems obvious to me that the growing availability of top class football, primarily NBCsn Premier League, is bound to reduce the number of people who would want to watch leagues. MLS needs local in person ticket sales, not plentiful TV revenue. Sort of like minor league baseball. Or the many European basketball teams who have local fans who attend, but tune in to NBA on their TVs. I see Euro jerseys everywhere, rarely to I see San Jose Earthquakes jerseys, same phenomenon for TV viewing me things.
We don't know for sure if there's a piggyback gain or not - I suspect there is on NBCSN - but we will know more from MLS Fox1 ratings in 2015 where there will certainly no bump whatsoever and, in fact, there may be competition from the Premiership. Heck, I don't even have time for all the highlights anymore.

US Men's Soccer recent friendlies numbers: ESPN pulled 717K viewers/0.4 in key Demo for the game against HON. It was ranked in the TOP 25 cable programs for the night. (WatchESPN/Spanish Platform not included) I don't see any numbers for Friday's game (vs. EQU), but the game was sandwiched between Pardon the Interruption (946K) and College Football (1.3 million). I assume the ratings were probably between 600k-700k on ESPN.

I am not sure how they get to 317K, are they using only the 2 hour block compared to the 2.5 we usually track? Including the All star geme I get 291K for 15 games. (315 with ESPNDEP) Excluding the All Star game I get 250K for 14 games. (274 with ESPNDEP) Yes compared to its peak, MLS ESPN ratings are down, but they are up somewhat from the terrible year they had last year.

Having said that, I did the rough calculation for the estimate, which is 547k.
Network is the most important factor, followed closely by kickoff time. Stoke-Swansea was on free to air NBC. Spurs-City was on cable/sat NBCSN. Later kickoffs help bring in a better nationwide audience, especially from the West coast where the time difference is -8 UK.
