I'm not sure how much the Cosmos brand specifically would help, as opposed to any other well-executed branding strategy. The brand of the Cosmos is greatly over rated imo. Sure an MLS NY Cosmos could be extremely succesful, but I think the same excellent organization which uses a different brand (if it's not stupid) will have the same success.
You're out of your mind! I'm a hardcore devils fan and a proud New Jerseyite. I'd never watch the NHL again.
I thought you couldn't bench a player for missing a game on an international date without FIFA coming down on you, no?
[ Going from Metrostars or NY Red Bulls to a Newark FC, Harrison FC or any of these New Jersey municipality names followed by an SC, FC or City sounds like a demotion to a smaller status. I just cannot see any world renowned player getting excited about playing for Newark FC.
Actually Metro FC or Metrostars FC are fine with me. If the Cosmos brand returns, I think they need to stop focusing so much on their past and update their logo and look. The Timbers, Whitecaps and Sounders used the past to a certain extent and then adopted a more modern look.
I'll say this for Eldora: It's good for those of us in Boulder County who aren't interested in driving very far.
And how close are they to being eligible for Social Security? I'm being snarky, but we are talking about a team that played their last league game 30 years ago.
Yup, and they are averaging just over 4400 fans this year, which shows just how far you can make it on nostalgia alone. They may have had a big following and people still may remember them from their heyday, but that was quite a while ago. The people that you will build a fanbase on never saw the team play. Pretty soon, the people that you are aiming your ticket sales at will remember the Metrostars as the NY soccer team that played in Giants Stadium, not the Cosmos.
The Sounders and Whitecaps did not exactly average large crowds either in the A-League before making the leap. I think the Impact and Timbers had decent crowds. So lower league attendance does not always correlate with MLS performance. But i do agree that the Cosmos will have a hard time with younger fans if they continue living off Pele and Chinaglia. They would need to update their logo, brand, uniforms and have a better marketing campaign than the nostalgia driven boring advertising they have no.
Hey All, what's more famous or what have you heard of? Real Housewives of NY or Real Housewives of NJ?
I actually think it's a decent demographic to draw from. People in their 40's who are American fans with no massive hard on for premier league or other leagues around the world, disposable entertainment income, too old to go out partying on Saturday nights, and old enough to want to bring their young kids to games. Nostalgia is a pretty powerful motivating factor. And I just don't see it hurting them with younger fans so any buzz it might create would help.
While listening to a recording of the Seeing Red! live calling-in show...apparently more than a thousand fans listened to this momentous week's show live... I must say... Pretty ironic... Not sure there was a bigger supporter of Red Bull buying and using the Cosmos name than me over many years. In addition to posting on this site it was a talking point in many, many conversations with club employees. Thought for awhile my name could be on a lose him list on phone but face to face everyone was at least cordial though while Erik Soler took it like a man I did chase Erik Stover out of the Meadowlands bar on one occasion. Then of course the relaunch and my F.cosmos campaign and I've sort of made my bed. Even during the height of the get and use the name fervor never thought Cosmos was some sort of panacea. In fact I thought the internal effect of hopefully uniting the fanbase and connecting with soccer history here was the main attraction. Never thought the late '70s early '80s days could be recreated...thought it could add a few thousand folks to the fanbase that would likely improve attendance but only marginally. My working theory on nasl cosmos buying our team is that they're likely under-capitalized. While they apparently have been able to figure out funding for a $400 million stadium/multi-use development plan and therefore could figure out how to finance a $300 million sale price it's not clear O'Brien/Sela would pass MLS muster. Have to imagine though that a larger ownership group could be constructed particularly with O'Brien's connections in Asia/Middle East...if any of this is real. Agnostic on this...need to hear more from both Wahl and Garber...without outing anonymous sources both sides have to release more information to support their assertions or we fans just move on... until... http://www.seeingredny.com/2014/10/episode-186-rbny-head-coach-mike-petke.html
One thing to remember about the Nets and Devils is that the original ny franchise was well established in NJ before the new NJ teams came around. You don't need to really worry about NJ residents liking a NY soccer team right now. The biggest problem with having NJ in the name is local coverage. NJ doesn't really have its own channels and radio stations. And the NYC based ones will all ignore the NJ team the same way they ignore the Devils. The coverage for example of kings-rangers cup final was far better and took up more air time on WFAn radio vs the kings-devils cup final. AND the Fan is the radio home of the Devils.
I'm sure NYCFC will get ignored plenty too, right until some Yankee hurts himself at home and the blame goes on NYCFC tearing up the turf.
On the Seeing Red! live show one caller said he monitored WFAN the radio voice of NYCFC (due to Yankee arm twisting) after the Lampard signing and it wasn't covered or even mentioned. For whatever it's worth... Spoke to a Red Bull employee at the game tonight who said in a pre game meeting folks were told word had just come in directly from Austria denying any sale or plan to shop the club...no surprise there...
NY Metros FC. I think this would be a better way to take a swipe at NYCFC than "Newark City". So, you're the team for the city, huh? Well, we're the team for the whole friggin' metropolitian area! Bring back the red-and-black stripes, though. With Chivas USA gone after this season, we need a new striped kit team in the league.
Totally fantasy discussion, but I would think that New York Metro Cosmos would reflect the appropriate approach to naming a merged club. Don't forget that in the mid-70s, Canadian NPL club Toronto Croatia bought NASL team Toronto Metros and named the new entity Toronto Metros-Croatia.
