yeah? no? 1. Ruud Gullit (LA) 2. Bora Milutinovic (MetroStars) 3. Carlos de los Cobos (Chicago) 4. Aron Winter (Toronto) 5. Ryan Nelsen (Toronto) full article: worst MLS coaches
How does Yallop keep getting MLS coaching jobs? Is there even one fan of a team he's coached who didn't consider him a disaster from day one?
The team he won MLS Cup with probably liked him just fine for awhile. Then there's John Ellinger, however . . .
A lot of people would say Steve Sampson (LA) but I don't know why he catches so much flak. I guess because of World Cup 98 but I like to remember he coached the US team to a victory over Brazil that same year in the Gold Cup. Any one know if he is still coaching somewhere?
How does Frank Klopas get MLS coaching jobs? Yallop did well with the Earthquakes in 2012, when has Klopas impressed as a coach?
Nah, he wasn't even the worst coach in the Revs' history. In fact, he did a pretty decent job his first year, bringing the team to a respectable playoff spot, when they had always been pretty much the definition of "pure and utter shite" for their entire history. There are a few categories of "worst coach" levels. There are the clueless guys who may have been players or coaches elsewhere but couldn't/wouldn't/didn't adjust to the sometimes bizarre workings of MLS. There are the egomaniacs whose "my way or the highway" approach is sure to alienate both players and his bosses before too long. There are the guys who are over their heads or aren't willing to put in the work. The amount of money/hype the guy is given just ups the ante a bit. You hire some no-name guy and he doesn't work out, big deal, but if it is a guy you paid a lot of money to with high expectations and he fails, well... I think the author is correct that Gullit has to be #1 on the list, for a combination of the hype/money, the ego and lack of work ethic, it is just astounding. At least the Toronto coaches were genuinely trying to right the ship...
The alarm bells really should have been ringing in preseason. The Galaxy didn't sign a single player who wasn't already in camp on the first day of preseason, and was the only team in MLS that was so idle in terms of player moves. For that matter, the Galaxy didn't even bring in a single new player on trial after the first day of preseason.
and Denis Hamlett (good assistant coach, awful head coach) Juan Carlos Osorio? (maybe just the worst coach's wife).
Hamlett was a horrible head coach, I would of liked to see what Osorio could or couldn't of done in 2008.
Curt Onalfo seemed clueless in his time at United and didn't even last a season (keep in mind we stuck with Olsen after 2013).
You know, he did win us some hardware, but only because of MLS's ridiculously merciful playoff standards. We were wildly inconsistent under his leadership - but what's worse was that we veered back and forth between being absolutely terrible being decent but boring. AEG wouldn't stand for it. Mind you, things only got worse for us over the next few years.
You know, truthfully speaking I wasn't even speaking of him as a Revs coach. My analysis of him was based on his Colorado tenure.
I really wish we hadn't locked that Bruce Arena is the worst coach in MLS thread... http://forums.bigsoccer.com/threads/is-bruce-arena-now-the-worst-coach-in-mls.897838/
That was with New York, I would of liked to see what he could of done with the FIRE. FIRE's 2008 and 2009 roster was a little bit better then New York's.
Maybe in Fire history. But 2 MLS Cups and a Supporters Shield should keep you off a Worst in MLS History list.
