How long has this been the case? If say the mid 80's squad of the Lakers or Yankees hosted a touring squad from Madrid or Liverpool, would they have said the same or wondered "who are those foreign guys"?
In this MLSsoccer video, Fred Armisten says he is a soccer & Timbers fan: http://www.mlssoccer.com/video/2014...isen-talk-soccer-portland-ahead-2014-att-mls-
Definitely more of a recent vintage to these things, except for the odd foreign-raised athlete on an American team. They probably would have spent more time with the host of some local morning show, demonstrating how to kick a ball, than with NBA & NFL players.

Looks like Robin Williams was a fan: 484034430067949568 is not a valid tweet id He had several bits where he makes fun of soccer and soccer antics.
Turns out that Seth Meyers is a fan of the Dutch (from his time living there) and West Ham, which he admits in this interview with the Men in Blazers: http://prosoccertalk.nbcsports.com/...blazers-appear-on-late-night-with-seth-myers/
Very interesting. Often it seems some celebs are reluctant to bring up their interest in something foreign. Whether it's cause they don't wanna alienate their audience or seem "fake" I do wonder.
World famous drummer, Steve Gadd, mentions he's a soccer fan during this inetrview on the "Give The Drummer Some! Podcast. https://gtdspod.wordpress.com/2014/06/20/episode-59-dr-steve-gadd/
He's a part owner of LAFC along with Tony Robbins: Who would've ever thought a kid from Lansing, Michigan would own a soccer team! Mom & Dad look at me now! Lol— Earvin Magic Johnson (@MagicJohnson) October 30, 2014
The last two World Cups have been pretty mainstream in the US, but that is different than being a fan of the game...
I don't know but I hope people paid attention to USA's success in World Cup 2002. Your post reminds me of when a New York City sports talk radio host didn't know if Donovan was a first name or a last name during World Cup 2006.
