Spain did enjoy another 3 years of being at the top before they fell apart, they only did fall apart during this cup, but I don't think the Germans will fall apart like that, I don't think they will be as loyal to their players like Spain was and be more realistic on the expectations of their team. I mean they put aside everything that was the norm after 2000 in order to be extremely competitive, I don't see them falling into the trap of loyalty like everyone else.

Howedes cleats up on Zabaleta's knee not mentioned? It's certainly not why Argentina lost as they choked on three chances to take the lead, but had this challenge happened in the group stage Howedes would have seen red. Marchisio and Valencia saw reds for less than this.

I really don't get this. A player plays and represents his country, wins the World Cup, and says "that's all folks." And people can't accept that? What do those people expect, play until he injures himself permanently? Do those people really have a relationship that is similar to marriage? We live though our teams and players waaaay too much, and it causes us to lose perspective.

Never mind the rest of the quality that Germany still possess (even with the lost of Lahm and Klose)

Because playing for Bayern is easier and less stressful than another Tournament. Going out on Top is pretty amazing. 2 years time to find a new LB is enough. Addition of guys like Reus will be a must now

Who will be Captain now? Bastian is obvious choice but maybe Loew goes with a younger guy like Kroos or Hummels

I actually think what Lahm did was the correct thing to do, he'll be 34 by the next world cup!!!

He knows he won't be their starting RB so why bother to keep going?

Most wished to see hin leading the team to Euro glory in '16 which is only little less significant for Europeans than the World Cup. It helps to focus instead and to built a new team.

Germany was needing more good full backs anyway.

Lahm would be the starting RB until 2016 for sure. How do I know this? Because there simply isn't any other option.

Did you think that in 2010 your best player would be Reus?

Countries like Germany, Brazil, Argentina and Italy you never know what kind of talent might just sprout up out of nowhere. Your best player (that didn't even play this WC) only became a starter on your national team after 2012, and in 2011 wasn't even a regular call up.

who knows, maybe this will clear up for a new RB to come in as unexpected as Reus did.

Do you know that Reus is not a full back?

As I said the point is NOT to retire after winning the WC its that he doesnt retire at all. He will probably win the Cl with Bayern and shit....but he is too fancy to play for the national team anymore. And it wouldnt surprise me if Schweinsteiger retires as well (only from the national team of course) and others dont play motivated anymore. At least not for the next two years. And then France will be stronger I am sure.

And Spain....the point is Spain was amazing since 2008 and they won it all. Germany was also good since 2010 but only just now won the title. I am sure we will see a quality loss very soon like with Spain.

No, but if Mueller, or Reus, or Oezil stepped down I would be OK because of the number or wingers and attacking players that are being produced. But fullbacks?

As far as fullbacks, perhaps - but it is safe to say we haven't really got a good track record producing them. We have Schmelzer and Durm on the right and no one on the left. For the last few months we have had Boateng play there, Bender and Grosskreutz.

But that's the whole point, you didn't know Reus would be your best and you don't know if some guy that you didn't even think about will step up to the occasion and be great.

Well the youth scouting experts in the German forum surely have the most promising prospects on their radar as does the DFB of course. It's not like back in the day anymore when a player Klose-like could come out of nowhere. And for Germany it isnt like with AMs - they're not full of decent fullbacks.

Don't forget: Lahm came out of nowhere at 19 years old, when he stormed the Champion League with Stuttgart. With a little bit of luck, one of our youngsters will be a positive surprise...

With all the scouting that is implemented today? I highly doubt it. If there was a decent fullback prospect at this time then Mustafi wouldnt have made it into the squad.
I saw him live in 2009 vs Ahlen. Alongside Großkreutz. I didnt see in him our best AM in 2014 but at least a CL player. The talent was already there. Großkreutz went to Dortmund, Reus to Gladbach after that season.

Is there a strategy with having a field player as captain over GK?
