Univision averaged 5.1 million for the two games. The PR is a little confusing, but it sounds like the earliest match got around 4 million and the 2nd match around 6 million. I'm still not sure about the exact numbers because I'm taking a calculated guess. So, about 12.5 million combined for Brazil game About 9 million combined for Germany game
The latest ratings http://espnmediazone.com/us/press-r...-cup-quarterfinal-match-on-espn-espn2-or-abc/ The ABC ratings have been a bit disappointing. It seems like the ESPN games have always significantly outdrawn the ABC games. When it comes to the world cup, the broadcast/cable difference seems to be non-existent. It might even be worse on ABC since people might not realize it is on that channel.
Please don't forget that these ratings are about 45% higher than the previous WC, and don't forget to add the WatchESPN app numbers as they have become far more relevant during this cup. For instance, the NEDvCOS game pulled about 1.1 million total unique viewers and about 750k for the ARGvBEL game. Plus, you are sharing the Ratings with Univision. So, there is nothing to be disappointed about... 4.2 million average for the WC2010 Quarters on ESPN/ABC/ESPN2 5.5 million average for WC2014 Quarters on TV + WatchESPN which is pulling great numbers. Add another 5 million or so for Univision, you get to about 10.5 million on TV + online platforms....These are great numbers.
The ratings aren't disappointing overall. I was just suggesting that the 2014 ABC ratings have been disappointing relative to the 2014 ESPN ratings. I think the ABC games should have gotten at least 6.5-7.5 million.

We have to point out that during 4th of July Weekend, you have millions of Americans who travel and not at home or vacationing. This means the Out-of-Home experience probably affected the ratings to an extend. As for the Semis, we could see the range to be around 6 million on ESPN (5.5-6.5 million), and add another 5-6 million on Univision. WatchESPN and Univision's online platform should see heavy traffic.
On the other hand, the ratings probably got a nice boost from the Northeast because the early part of the holiday weekend was largely a washout (thanks to Arthur). The top 10 markets for Brazil vs Colombia - New York (6.5), Hartford/New Haven (6.5), San Francisco (6.3), San Diego (6.3), Providence (6.1), Miami/Ft. Lauderdale (5.9), Washington, DC (5.7), Boston (5.7), Los Angeles (5.6) and Las Vegas (5.5). Higher than normal for those three NE markets.
Due to a heavy Latin presence in the knockout rounds, the Univision numbers are boosted and the ESPN's are suppressed. It's all there's to it. As I had said before, had it been England instead of Uruguay, the overall demo skew would have been different.

Friday’s Germany/France match drew 9.6 million across ESPN2 (4.9M) and Univision (4.7M). The ESPN2 audience was the largest in the history of the network, topping the previous high of 4.6 million for an Athletics/Red Sox MLB playoff game in 2003. Saturday’s Argentina/Belgium match brought up the rear with 8.8 million on ABC (5.2M) and Univision (3.6M). Somebody can explain me why Germany - France has been watched by 4.7 million on Univision ( a Spanish channel ), while at the same hour of the after day Argentina - Belgium has been watched by only 3.6 million on the same channel ? Argentina is a latin team and has Messi....
ESPN has all languages except Spanish. It would be crazy to eliminate all Spanish broadcasts in USA. Surely cup is far more valuable to Univision than it would be to ESPN Deportes. It's over the air. It's 'go to' channel for Mexican League MX. (ESPN Deportes is rarely available in HD) No doubt there would be "economies of scale" if ESPN owned Univision. That synergy does exist and has a lot to do with Premier League on NBCsn and Telemundo, both part of the Comcast empire. ======== In other words ESPN All but English rights + Univision Spanish rights puts more money in FIFA's coffers. [ In case you hadn't noticed, you can watch ESPN's productions in Korean and Portuguese on Watch ESPN ]
2016 is going to be another massive Soccer summer... Copa America on primetime on Univision and FOX Sports (Fox has the upper hand, and will likely seal the deal). EURO 2016 ESPN daytime Olympics 2016 Brazil...Olympic Soccer could play an important role in Primetime coverage (NBC Sports) 2015 is not that far off with Women's World Cup and Gold Cup.
I'm interested in knowing the Germany/Brazil rating after that drama. In most circumstances, I'd expect the ratings to take a significant hit, but maybe not this time.
Yeah, considering the social media explosion during the match -- the numbers may have actually gone up as the score got further and further away from Brazil. http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-28226242
