You're absolutely right - it was Cameron, capping his miserable night, who lost his man and was beaten to the ball. I swear it looked like he had no idea Varela was behind him. but it all started with bradley, and it wasn't the first time he displayed poor judgment and got caught fiddlef@#%ing around with the ball. He's supposed to be one of our best players. The last tuneup vs. the Super Eagles, he looked outstanding. He has not yet brought that game to Brazil. If he doesn't show up on Thursday, I fear that US fans will be hoping that Portugal can hold Ghana to a draw (which I doubt very much will actually happen - I think the Black Stars, who have played two decent games, will crush a beat up CR & Co.)

Mexico really impressed me. I had Croatia advancing.

I though Mexico would advance, but I didn't think they'd outplay Croatia as badly as they did. Karma caught up to the Croatians, whose players (and coach) insinuated ochoa was "lucky" against Brazil and that they had seen much better on a routine basis in Europe. This is especially interesting seeing as Croatia's best was none other than a clearly past his prime Stipe Pletikosa. I think Pletikosa got his hands on all but one goal scored vs CRO in the tournament (the last goal that Mexico put in), seems to have coated his gloves with 5w-30 before taking the field.

Have to say, Mexico looked pretty good. A far cry from the team last year that had to depend on a USA result on the last day of Hex qualifying, just to finish 4th and get to a playoff.

Was pulling for the Croats hard but good for Mexico, always seem to advance past the group stage and Croatia was the much better team on paper but they still spanked them.

Pletiklosa single handedly lost Croatia points to Brazil and Mexico. Akinfeev wouldn't let those kind go in, dead serious.

So pissed Greece won, Ivory coast v. Costa Rica was going to be amazing.

Colombia and Chile haven't impressed? Only a few of the Europeans that you always want to win facing S. American opposition?

'Bout time Big Soccer does away with the 'FSU' monicker and gives separate pages to separate nation states. Russia couldn't be more dead to me

How does Russia not qualify from that group? I admit, I was pulling against them but, hey, I thought I would be involved in a losing argument!

That was a sad showing. Another mistake from Akinfeev. Sad sad sad. The only schadenfreude on my part here is b/c of Dima's rants about Ukraine.

Embarrasisng WC for Russia. A country with the huge sports tradition of Russia deserves something better.

Firing Capello should be the first measure to take. I recall Russia having a "going forward attitude" back in the good old days. Capello's got a way too defensive approach, which it doesn´t exploit the fortitudes of the team.

I'm Chilean and I was rooting for Russia as I usually do.
Don´t add me in your particular counting as being part of "rest of the world".

Like I said, while I wasn't happy about their loss.....in fact, I was hoping they would advance....it does bring me at least some pleasure to see your reaction.

You GLOATED about Russia making it and were rubbing it in our faces about how bad Ukraine was. You made fun of Ukrainian posters and kept propping up the Russian team.

As they say Dima, как аукнется так и откликнется.....So you're just going to have to suffer through this for now. You brought this on yourself.

As a side note, even the most staunch supporter of Russia has to admit this was an embarrassment of rather epic proportions.

Dude you've got shit twisted, I'm not distraught at all and neither is any Russia fan. Our expectations were extremely low and we were well aware that the team played dull football, so believe me anyone who follows this side knew the deal. Only casual knuckleheads who jump on the bandwagon (most of Russia) and so called (foreign) analysts who just assume that Russia is pretty good picked us to advance. Serious Russian journalists and fans have done nothing but criticize and downplay this team despite the fact that they won the group.

If you think that I'm sitting here all upset with a sinking feeling in my stomach you're wrong. I've passed the depression after a loss phase even before Euro 2012.

Although naturally when you love a team as much as I do this one (the people on this forum just couldn't understand) it's gonna hurt a wee bit.

Guus and DA weren't getting paid 11MM/year, either.

I know he just signed a new contract, but I would seriously take a look at replacing him. That was one awful coaching performance. Uninspiring game plans, mostly poor substitutions or tactical adjustments - or too late, as was usually the case. Game vs. Belgium, or the last 10 minutes or so, was the best example of this. Just as tepid and uninspiring as he was with England in 2010. There's no real good reason Russia should not have taken at least 2nd from this group - Korea might be the worst team in the tournament, Belgium didn't impress anyone, and a GOOD coach could have designed a game plan to take the starch out of a hard working yet one dimensional Algerian team.

One thing I wonder - did this team train on crosses and/or corner kicks at all? MULTIPLE times yesterday there were good runs into the box only to see some of the worst attempts at crosses in the entire tournament. There was exactly ONE yesterday, Kombarov's, which led to the goal, and that was about it. Every corner was abysmally taken. Algeria's central defenders left lots of holes to be exploited (wait until you see Germany dismantle them in this exact same fashion) yet the Russian team shot itself in the foot with absolutely terrible service into the box.

Korea probably wasn't helped by their staff spending night after night in the strip clubs of iguasu.

    Shit....who can blame them.

I fully expect US to beat Belgium. Belgium is going all the way though at Euros 16.
