Doc Emrick is likely making GuJo $$, not that a paycheck equates to quality (see; Berman, Chris.) And what you fail to realize is Emrick is a professional, so, yes, he'd be great at whatever, given the training. GuJo has 10% of Emrick's ability (to put it kindly), so we get an abortion every time he tries to call a soccer match. And he's not getting better.
We will agree to disagree. I don't mind Johnson. It is the Color commentators next to him I dislike. And he is getting better in my opinion.
They have done him zero favors with the color commentators he's been saddled with. I think it's safe to say that your opinion re; GuJo's improvement is in the distinct minority.
I am not sure if it is in the minority. Many people think he is improving. The growth may be very slow but he is still getting better.
I don't know about that. The of improvement I absolutely notice is so slow it's ridiculous. I have no faith will develop into suitable lead narrator for the US in four years. The problem is Fox is looking for some imaginary bullet. Perhaps is they were to assign him a couple of matches a week ever week, rather than a couple of Champion's league late state encounters, there would be a chance. My hunch is that Johnson might take it seriously, trouble is Fox is clueless in this regard and won't send him "back to school". After all he's still got to be pimped out as "GuJo" the super-star.
I don't think he has improved. And my issue isn't with the pronunciation. It is with his lack of knowledge of the game. He clearly had no knowledge of the game before he got the job, which puts him in a really difficult spot. I honestly believe he works hard and tries to learn about it but then he ends up coming off as really rigid. It's just not natural because he doesn't have a natural foundation to place the new material he has learned on. He actually reminds me of a lot of new American soccer fans I am meeting. Very informed about the game as of today. But have no depth to their knowledge so end up coming off as very, excuse the term, "plastic". And the only way to overcome it is time. Building up that base of knowledge, so you can put the current events in proper perspective and actually form your own opinion rather than repeating someone elses. Which is essentially all Gus can do at the moment. Maybe he will have it by 2018, but it's going to be tough. Particularly with an ever more sophisticated American audience.
