So he blames it on MLS, and says that he was "he was playing at 70 percent, 80 percent, and he was still dominant" and in turn brings a bunch of less dominant MLS players who are nowhere near his 70 percent when they are at 100 percent form? And what the f*** does a contract extension for Kobe have anything to do with it? He's not giving Donovan a contract extension, he's putting together the best players for three fricking games. And Landon is a lot younger and closer to his prime than Kobe.

    What a clueless jack ass.

I was mostly reffering to posters here as far as who is making an argument. You guys love to trot that strawman out and set it on fire all the while marvelling at your superior debating skills.

You neglect the matter that he has coached in a World Cup before as well as blowing up every way marker on the road to Brazil. To attack or belittle a player for supporting his coach is ridiculous. He has exceeded expectations to date, no matter what you "think"is going to happen the evidnece thus far clearly indicates we are on the right track, his name is in our record books in several spots already.

The whole yeah but... attempt to diminish or demean that just shows desperation on the part of his detractors. He may fail, but thus far there is every indication that he is delivering beyond expectations. Hence his renewal. :)

Well this basically confirms that the dude thinks like a Eurosnob. As if a summer MLS schedule has anything to do with the success of our players. As if running our national team practices more like a German national team practice will turn Matt Besler into an elite defender .

America creates fine players in multiple sports using our own development models. There is nothing so unique about soccer that requires a different approach. What we need is better coaching, more players playing the game longer into their teen years, and more financial incentives when they turn pro. It's that simple. All that takes time, and the results of the national team are correlated but aren't going to be a straight line in a positive direction.

at one time, i was on "the american way" bandwagon, essentially bruce arena's viewpoint in this article. but i'm not sure "the american way" (described well in another article somewhere as "try hard, run fast") will either develop fast enough into a full fledged method, or be sufficient to consistently compete against the rest of the world.

i was hoping that JK's "hybrid" qualities could somehow chart a clever path that mixes the best of american, with an infusion of something else to get us beyond the "try hard, run fast" method. while i think that clever path may still come about, for some reason i'm surprised at how german JK remains.

I disagree about that assessment of the "American way." Nobody would describe our basketball development model as "try hard, run fast." In basketball, it's all about having kids play a lot of the game in their free time, lots of coaches teaching the fundamentals well and elite coaches at the high school level attracting the best players to polish their technique and teach them advanced tactics. Even more so in college, though the best high school players only spend a year in college before turning pro these days. The only reason the American model in soccer would be described as "try hard, run fast" is we've had clueless coaches at the youth level on up. As we get better coaching we'll have people teach better fundamentals. This is already happening.

It's actually the only way the US will develop into a soccer power. There is no magic European solution. We aren't going to get rid of high school being fundamental in developing athletes in this country no matter how many Power Point presentations Klinsmann gives. We aren't going to have thousands of semi-pro and low level professional soccer clubs spawn all over America, because US Soccer decides by fiat that we need to be more European. Kids don't need to turn pro before 18 in basketball to become elite, there is no reason they need to in soccer either, just because that's how it works in other countries.

    What expectations are those?

(And yes, we were playing very well last year.)

He's finished 1st in the Hex and won an off-year Gold Cup. He's met expectations, as both things have been done before. He needs to continue to meet expectations and get out of the group.

I quoted a specific statement that echoes beliefs I've heard asserted here and elsewhere and laid out the evidence I'm aware of refuting it. Please try to stay away from broad statements about "you guys", burning "straw men" , "yeah, buts" (??? ) or your opinion of my opinion about my debating skills or what you imagine my emotional state is.

I am not sure what the exact expectations were for the first part of his contract, but I am certain an ahead of schedule renewal indicates satisfaction on the employers part.
    • From USSOCCERs Website dated 12/2013
      • Klinsmann’s record as head coach of the Men’s National Team is 27-10-7, including two back-to-back record-setting years.
      • After finishing 2012 with a 9-2-3 record, good for a .750 winning percentage to equal the best ever winning percentage to date, a year later Klinsmann led the team to an even better record, setting single year records for wins (16), winning percentage (.761), and consecutive wins (12).
      • The U.S. finished the final round of 2013 CONCACAF World Cup qualifying atop the Hexagonal with a 7-1-2 overall record, including an unblemished 5-0-0 home record that was achieved by keeping clean sheets in all five matches.
      • The team won six straight games en route to capturing the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup, during which the squad scored a record 20 goals.
      • Klinsmann has won a record-setting 12 straight games at home, and also led the MNT to a 12-game winning streak, the longest in program history.
      • Committed to challenging the group against the best, under Klinsmann the United States has a 2-1-1 record against teams ranked in the top 10 in the world.
      • With Klinsmann at the helm, the U.S. has collected four historic victories:
        • Beating four-time World Cup champion Italy for the first time ever
        • Earning the first win against Mexico on Mexican soil
        • Defeating Jamaica on the road for the first time in World Cup Qualifying
        • Topping second-ranked Germany in U.S. Soccer’s Centennial Celebration Match

He just doesn't like Donovan. Of course he's not going to come out and say it straight, but in every interview you sense that hypocrisy that comes when people are trying to hide something. He dismisses the MLS when over a third of the guys he selected are MLSers, some of them career MLSers, with less time outside it than Donovan. It just makes no sense.

I've settled for the guy just didn't like LD, and the balance of the tactics he was going to use, plus the peace of mind he needed for the Cup, were the perfect excuses to cut him without feeling bad over it. Now let's see how he does in Brazil.

Man this is some of the stupidest thinking I have heard yet . .

And how, exactly, given his opinion regarding Kobe Bryant's extension make his own contract extension appear?

I think he is exempt from looking at himself.

And, as others have noted, his job is to pick the best players and motivate them.

I wish he would be quiet and quit explaining how important and insightful he is. He is just digging his hole deeper.

i get the feeling sunil has given him a much broader scope. before and during previous attempts to sign him, JK often talked about "reinventing american soccer" basically from the ground up. some have suggested that ussoccer didn't want to give him that mandate, causing JK to turn down the job. since then, JK has not only gotten the coaching job, but was also named Technical Director with his contract extension.

unless something worse than 0 points in brazil happens, like the ball never leaving the us half during any game or something, i get the feeling we are stuck with the JK method for the foreseeable future.

He looks like a dumb ass saying this stuff, particularly given his own contract extension.

He has a team to coach coming up, the most important games he has, by far, yet to coach.

Here is the high road, Jurgen (particularly given his failure to discuss it after it happened), "Guys, I am sure you all would like to have some more information regarding my decision to cut Landon from the team. I'm afraid we are just going to have to leave it at 'Coach's Decision', and I know you probably want to hear more than that. I may speak about it after the Cup. Right now, I have a team to coach and they really don't need to be distracted."

He takes himself waaaayyyyyy too seriously, particularly given what is coming up and a lot of evidence of some poor thinking.

This is the key. You can say that soccer arrived in the U.S. when the head of our fed, and most discerning fans accepted soccer as the result oriented sport that it is in the rest of the world. Since 2010 we have reached the point where it is no longer just "building for the future;" results at the cup matter and getting out of the group is expected.

If you don't believe me, there are plenty of posts regarding the very same thing with expectations for the coach regarding the 2010 World Cup. It's an easy search.

I am rooting for the team and hope we do get those results. Let's take our best shot. We should be looking to pop every single one of the group opponents in the mouth. The coach has picked his team, and I will believe that he is trying to go as far as possible in this tournament. If we don't get those results we need to re-evaluate whether the program is heading in the right direction or not.

Good sir, you can certainly say that again. Tom Sermani/Jill Ellis ring a bell?

I posted his accomplishments as the coach of the USMNT that prove he is doing a bang up job thus far. I am in agreement that ...what is that phrase exactly.... He hasn't done ish as manager of the USMNT. I must in fairness admit as well that he has not has the chance yet, but all signs point to him surprising the collective wisdom of BS and putting us in position to give a good account of ourselves in Brazil.

I cannot say he has to get out of group to stay coach. I do not know what Metric Sunil is using,. or what Dear old Dan has to say about things. I was mostly pointing out that he had met the expectations that matter most, as evidenced by the ten million or so reasons they gave him to sign his extension?

I can do real mathematics, so I am not a huge fan of stats in their raw forms. I don't think I have talked about them a lot but it has more to do with the arbitrary nature of the game. The lack of controls and the multivariate nature of football does not lend itself easily to statistical analysis.

I try to stay away from them though since I don't come here to do any kind of math. If others want to reduce the game to some kind of take-off of baseball, where there are stats for guys hitting percentage against left handers on Tuesdays in June when it rains. (ok hyperbole)

There really wasn't any statistical analysis in my post, merely a list of accomplishments thus far.

When I gamble I do pay very close attention to odds, does that count? :)

Changing direction a little here; IMO these guys will not see the pitch except in the most unusual of circumstances:

    AJ
    Green
    Gonzo

With the backline unfortunately still unsettled, I hesitate to add Beasley, Brooks and Yedlin to the most likely not to play list at this time. But after Nigeria a couple more defenders such as one of these 3 could be added.

IMO that leaves about 15 or 16 field players who will get the majority of minutes in the tourney. To predict JK's starting XI past the 1st match is not useful now (insert your smack here). I just hope that Portugal and Germany has a winner and not a tie.

That match along with our own result vs. Ghana will dictate who plays the rest of the way as we find our "rhythm". The "only" way I see these other guys getting playing time will be if before the Germany match we are assured of either being in or out of the knock put rounds. Otherwise 5 guys will "only" enjoy getting awesome seats and fabulous fitness.

If you are right, that makes 18, possibly 17 that make the field (2 gk) during the cup. All it takes is an injury, a suspension and maybe a bit of fatigue (it's hot down there) to put us in trouble. If so, than we are going woefully unprepared when you consider that we have (unarguably I believe) more depth than at any time in the past.
I know that fitness is something that is supposed to be a strong point and I believe it will be, but guys will still get fatigued.
One injury would probably be par for the course and 2 or 3 over three games would not be unheard of. What if two are at one position? Outside midfield? Is Green ready to start a game? It could happen. (or a defender(s) could be moved but that creates its own problems. Dempsey to the outside? Again, it's own problems...
