Great resources indeed, especially on the game-by-game scores of the old NASL. Are the list of games complete? The 1969 season seemed pretty short... http://soccerstats.us/c/north-american-soccer-league/1969/games/ As for the Standings, possible to provide some footnotes on how the points totals were derived? http://soccerstats.us/c/north-american-soccer-league/1969/ For the all-time table, does it include playoff games, or just regular season? http://soccerstats.us/c/north-american-soccer-league/ Keep up the good work buddy!!
SoccerDB, a nice resource on game-by-game scores, stats & all-time tables (as long as the seasons/scores are complete): http://aragon.ws/soccerdb/site/about.php
As far as I know, the game results are complete - game data are pulled from Colin Jose's book NASL - A Complete Record of the North American Soccer League (let me re-emphasize that Colin Jose has been an invaluable resource for this site). It's possible that some games are missing (probably due to programming errors), but in the case of the 1969 season, I believe that the league just had a very short, strange season - it almost died that year. You can check out the standings on Wikipedia and see that they look equally weird: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1969_North_American_Soccer_League_season The all-time table does not include playoff games - I've hard a hard time deciding when to include playoff games as a separate competition and when to include them in league results. So you can find the NASL playoff results here http://soccerstats.us/c/north-american-soccer-league-playoffs/games/ - the main page is a little sad. I'll work on a description of why point totals are what they are, although it might take a little while - there are a lot of different point schemes through the history of US soccer. (thanks for the feedback.)
Hi Chris, was looking at the 1968 standings (http://soccerstats.us/c/north-american-soccer-league/1968/), just wondering if there could be any errors/omissions as below: 1. All teams have played 32 games, except the below two teams at 31 each, mind check? team w t l pts gf ga gp Atlanta Chiefs 18 6 7 174 50 32 31 Detroit Cougars 6 4 21 88 65 40 31 2. From the final standings, the overall GF by all teams was 954, however, the overall GA was just 912. Shouldn't they tally with each other? 3. The main page currently says "Goals: 0 (1.8 goals/game)". Should it be 1.8 x 278 = 500 goals? (However, 500 doesn't seem to tally with the overall goals scored of 954 or 912 in point #2 as well.) 4. Am importing the 278 games of 1968 season (as listed in http://soccerstats.us/c/north-american-soccer-league/1968/games/) into the PDA program of SoccerDB (http://aragon.ws/soccerdb/site/pocketpc.php) to check if they tally with final standings as shown on the main page, will update again upon import...
Henry, thanks a ton for doing this. It's great to have another set of eyes looking for errors. 1. Looking at the Chiefs and Spurs game listings, it looks like they both played 32 games - including one against each other. That game was in the middle of the year, so it's not likely that the standings missed it - perhaps it was invalidated for some reason? I can't find any notes as to what happened, so it might be worth contacting Colin Jose. 2. They certainly should tally. In some cases, shootout wins or something might interfere with this, but the 1968 NASL had no such thing. 3. That's two bugs on my part. I've been counting the goals that I have recorded (e.g. who scored when), not the scores of the game, which is obviously the right thing to do. The goals/game number was actually half of the correct number - a computation error on my part. Those should be correct now. 4. That's great. I'm extremely busy until the end of the week, but will try to address some of these things by the beginning of next week. I'll try to review the other NASL seasons and seem if I can find any similar problems to what you've found here. if you have any reason to think my standings are incorrectly transcribed (it's certainly possible) you can compare them to Dave Litterer's collection at the US Soccer History Archives - here's 1968: http://homepages.sover.net/~spectrum/year/1968.html. But you probably already knew that.
No problem at all, please pleasure. Perhaps we can exchange email with PM to transfer files (Excel, Zip, etc.) which may not be otherwise suitable through the forum. Found: David Litterer's site for 1968 did mention that "The close of the season found Atlanta winning the Atlantic Division (in spite of only playing 31 games; making up a canceled date with Detroit was deemed unnecessary as it would have had no impact on the standings)", that explains the one missing game. I suppose in the cases of shoot-outs, the "winning" goal awarded to the GF of the winning team would be matched by the goal credited to the GA of the losing team, as with the case of MLS '96-99, discussed in another thread at: https://www.bigsoccer.com/community/threads/changes-in-official-mls-standings-96-99.1974252/ (Feel free to vote in the poll there as well...) Upon importing to SoccerDB PDA program, have identified the following potential issues: A. There could be a number of duplicate games as below, with virtually identical scores/attendances and very close to each other. Upon removing one of them (I assume the latter ones were extras), the standings have became tallied with the match scores: April 26, 1968 NASL Boston Beacons 0 - 4 Los Angeles Wolves Fenway Park 5300 0 0 April 27, 1968 NASL Boston Beacons 0 - 4 Los Angeles Wolves Fenway Park 5300 0 0 July 5, 1968 NASL Toronto Falcons 1 - 0 Detroit Cougars Varsity Stadium 2449 0 0 July 6, 1968 NASL Toronto Falcons 1 - 0 Detroit Cougars Varsity Stadium 2449 0 0 July 20, 1968 NASL Kansas City Spurs 7 - 1 Boston Beacons Kansas City Municipal Stadium 7585 0 0 July 21, 1968 NASL Kansas City Spurs 7 - 1 Boston Beacons Kansas City Municipal Stadium 7585 0 0 Aug. 23, 1968 NASL New York Generals 2 - 4 Oakland Clippers Yankees Stadium 1554 0 0 Aug. 24, 1968 NASL New York Generals 2 - 4 Oakland Clippers Yankees Stadium 1554 0 0 Aug. 23, 1968 NASL Boston Beacons 1 - 4 Washington Whips Fenway Park 2521 0 0 Aug. 25, 1968 NASL Boston Beacons 1 - 4 Washington Whips Fenway Park 2521 0 0 Aug. 24, 1968 NASL Atlanta Chiefs 2 - 1 Baltimore Bays Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium 2066 0 0 Aug. 28, 1968 NASL Atlanta Chiefs 2 - 1 Baltimore Bays Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium 2006 0 0 Sept. 1, 1968 NASL Toronto Falcons 3 - 0 St. Louis Stars Varsity Stadium 4505 0 0 Sept. 6, 1968 NASL Toronto Falcons 3 - 0 St. Louis Stars Varsity Stadium 4504 0 0 B. Upon removing the 7 duplicate games, the total number of games played should became 271 (i.e. 272-1 game between Atlanta-Detroit, where 272=17 teams x 32 games / 2), and total number of goals scored = 936. C. From the program, also noted that Houston & Cleveland have played 17 home games (1 extra than the correct 16). Conversely, St. Louis & Baltimore have played 17 away games. As soon as one of the game between each errorneous pair is identified and fixed, all teams would have played 16 games. Both sites are great resources! David's rich in historical background while yours are full of stats and scores...
I have already voted. I think it's extremely obvious that you should separate shootout wins in the standings, and not include shootout "goals" - really just a bookkeeping device - in team goals scored. Otherwise you're really not representing what happened (shootout losses should likewise be separated from real losses.) I've looked through these and they all seem to be errors in Colin Jose's book. Date errors are pretty easy to make considering that newspapers frequently publish results on the 31st for a game on the 30th (e.g.). I'll just go ahead and assume for the sake of normalizing the standings that the first game date is the correct one - hopefully someone can figure out eventually which one is really correct. Seems like the erroneous Cleveland/Baltimore game is on 5/4 - both the Baltimore and Cleveland pages list it as an away game for the respective teams - seems very likely this is an error on the Baltimore page. The Houston/St. Louis game is on 8/20 - same problem. The website should reflect those changes in a few days.
For readability, maybe it's a good idea to include an index number (a.k.a. regular season ranking) on the left of the standings (next to the name of each team), as well as a new column on GD on the right of the standings. By the way, any idea why was the points for Toronto Metros-Croatia missing in the 1977 Standings? http://soccerstats.us/c/north-american-soccer-league/1977/
http://www.football-lineups.com/ is pretty good for the more-watched leagues. It tracks lineups (actual on-field positions for the starters) and at least several types of goals (headed, free kick, penalty). But it's crowdsourced, so games in less popular leagues are often missing players' exact positions.
In case this wasn't posted elsewhere, the below site contains the detailed game scores for NASL in 1968-84 as well: http://wildstat.com/p/7401/ch/USA_1_1968_RS/stg/all/tour/all (To look for the detailed scores for each season, just use the the drop-down menu & filter by Regular Season -> All Matches)
I would want to take one player out of a squad and swap him with someone else and see if team points, wins, and losses are affected.....but I think that is impossible.
Anybody know of any sites that have historical results in Excel format (besides http://football-data.co.uk/data.php) or at least in a layout that is easy to copy/past into Excel? RSSF has a lot of what I'm looking for but it's very time consuming to manually transfer all the data.
Hi, We are looking for football scout in : Africa, Asia, South America and few european country : - Moldova - Albania - Ukraine - Bulgaria - Macedonia - Romania - Belarus Send your cv : scoutingjob@gmail.com Thanks, Martin
I have just released the first version of a database regarding the European Cups for clubs. It is in sql and csv formats, and contains the results of all the matches played in the European Cups since 1956. I will constantly update it and add new infos. You can download it here: http://nicolacerin.altervista.org/db.html
Hello. I have been building a database that has minute by minute data for 25 different events (eg goals, corners, cards, offsides, blocks, misses, saved, subs....) The leagues covered are Premiership, Italy, Spain, Germany, France and the MLS. I am about to add another 6 seasons to this current one which equates to 11,500 matches with the detail described above. There is a tiny charge which really covers my hosting space and time to collate each week. A free sample is also available. www.footballstatistics.co Any feedback is welcome. Thank you.
I need to get the results from the old A-League. I've been copy/pasting from this site but it's a very time consuming process. Does anyone already have these results in excel/notepad format or know of a faster way of importing them into Excel?
