In the S'land forums they are theorizing the penalty is for foul by their keeper. I didn't see it, but it makes more sense, because I'm sure the ref noticed the grab on Wickham was outside the box.

So the DOGSO and the penalty were two separate actions.

The rule needs sharpened. The officials are allowed a bit too much latitude and it seems farcical.

One tug on the arm results in a penalty, a sending off and a suspension, yet play was allowed to continue due to advantage.

Altidore must really confide in you, huh?

Hey, all due credit to Wickham (great header today, by the way), but he is also getting a lot more touches and chances than Altidore. Wickham had 50 touches against Man City, that is often more than 180 minutes worth for Altidore.

For me, today is the best Wickham has looked at any time I have ever seen him at any level for any club at any age. That tentative air about him is gone today. Good for him.

Wouldn't the keeper have been sent off then?

Edit: wait, so after allowing the advantage after the DOGSO, the referee then calls another foul and awards a penalty and still sends off the player on the original foul.

    Webb is out of control.

Well, Cardiff with 10 and they winning it 2-0, I bet we'll see Jozy later on, to give one of their starting forwards a rest.

I was watching the game while typing. I meant the penalty was by their keeper, it's what they think. The DOGSO demands a red. I guess two reds for one play would have been too much.

PS: Thinking about it, what the S'land fans mentioned doesn't make much sense. The red & penalty should come from the same action, cannot punish an event happening after the call.

I wouldn't put it past Webb.

The fact that we're having this discussion points to a rule clarification being needed.

That would have been an even more ridiculous call then if it was on the defender

Following the talk about the call on both the S'land and Cardiff forums: it had to be one action punished, so it was Caulker's pull of Wickham's arm, which started outside the box, but continued until they were inside.

Waiting was done for the penalty. If Wickham scored, then no peno. DOGSO was obvious, everybody agrees with the red, even the Cardiff fans. The debate is on the penalty. Often, they are called where the foul starts, not where it ends. Problem is, Caulker loosened his grip on Wickham and then pulled him hard again, this time inside the box.

So the ref may have ignored the initial pull, and only considered the second, which was both red and peno. At any rate, the rule about where to 'point' the foul, at the start or after, needs to be more clear. Also, if the foul is a re-incident one, should it be called, or should the initial call stand?

Sunderland break 3 v 2, the Johnson cross is a little bit in front of where Wickham would want it, but it is a little strange he makes no motion to lunge for the ball right in front of goal. Odd play.

Good reaction by Mannone to save a deflected FK. He has to be their POTY, right?

Yes, Mannone is their player of the season. He gets a lot of stick, though. The fans would probably choose Cattermole or AJ as their best, though. Or Wickham now. At least from what I read on their big forum.

But if Dowd (it is Dowd, not Webb) calls the foul right after the tug and Wickham managed to get around the keeper while the whistle was being blown, people would be howling at him for blowing the whistle too early. Allowing advantage was fine - it went on a little too long IMO, but if you consider that the advantage still allowed a goal-scoring opportunity with the keeper off his line and no other defenders back, it's the right call. And if Wickham scores, Cala doesn't get sent off.

Are fans on their forums actually saying Wickham should be POTY? Ha!

But hell, he would be a far better choice than Cattermole. I mean, good lord...

Doesn't make sense. In that case, it's better to let him score, since it means no penalty and no red. I think the red would have stood, whether he scored or not. The penalty, on the other hand, depended on the scoring. If the rule were like that, then the smart thing for a forward is to miss the scoring chance on purpose. Yeah it was Cala, I thought it was Caulker.

I'm surprised how unsure Marshall looks. With Scotland he seems safer coming out.

Cattermole was their nominee in the first part of the year, then it was Adam, now it's Wickham. They praise their guys based on form. Cattermole had some very good games during their darkest days, TBH.

    3-0, Borini.

Giaccherini scores, 3-0 Sunderland. Wow, Borini actually made a good pass for once.

Can't give a red card for denying a goal-scoring opportunity if a goal is scored.

Edit: Pg 130, in the Interpretations section of the Laws:
If the referee applies advantage during an obvious goalscoring opportunity and
a goal is scored directly, despite the opponent’s handling the ball or fouling an
opponent, the player cannot be sent off but he may still be cautioned.

Cardiff have been poor today, but this is as good as Sunderland has been all year

And it was Dowd. My bad

The stream I'm watching gets all the names wrong. They said Caulker instead of Cala, and now Borini instead of Giaccherini. LOL.

Yeah it was Giacch with the goal.

No, in that case is for the foul (shirt-pulling).

Like most bottom of the table EPL matches, the technical level this is being played at is atrocious.
