"BTW, if anyone from Monaco Hotel is interested in experience what your players will face weather wise, I play a weekly 6x6 pickup game and would gladly take a team gathered from you." Couldn't be more IN for this.
Pick up game sounds good, keep us posted on the details. Forgot to ask, what are the tailgating policies before the game at the stadium? Is it allowed?
Tailgate is not really a brazilian tradition. Usually you'll find plenty of small food and beers being sold in tents around the stadium - which is kind of a tailgate. BUT I'm not sure how it's going to work with FIFA running the show. My best guess is that will be a perimeter around the stadium with several of these tents being set on the outside.
FIFA normally cordon off a wide area and don't allow any competition to the overpriced food and drink in the stadiums. They watch for any competing food drink or merchandise. Having said that one of my best memories of South Africa was in a shebeen in Rustenburg (before Australia v Ghana) in sight of the stadium where a private house turned into a huge indoor and outdoor bar selling bottles of beer and some food with Holland v Japan on the tv. It was closed by the time we went back for Ghana v USA.
Question for some of you with Manaus experience: My buddies and I are landing at 2AM on the day of the USA-Portugal game and then leaving town at 11:30PM the same day. As much as I'd love to explore the area, gotta move on to other matches. So, I am wondering if/when the VIP Lounge Fronteiras club thing at MAO airport will be open. Would be fantastic to grab a couple of hours sleep there before heading out into town. Otherwise, I might have to pay for multiple hotel nights, even though we'll only be there 4 hours or less. Thanks in advance. TE
Sorry TE, I have no idea regarding the VIP lounge. I guess I'd just hang at the airport for a few hours, leave my bags somewhere and head for the city/stadium/fan zone. I might be able to do this service and hold on to your bags for the day. PM me if you're interested.
I did a little research around town regarding hotels and found many rooms avaiable. I'm talking about small, basic hotels, with cheaper rates. Let me know if thats something you need as these hotels dont have websites.
Riker, could you please share that information for me? Of course, I would like to vet these places - even if they don't have websites, I'm hoping I can find some sort of feedback on them on the internet. Also, does anyone have suggestions for resources to find hotels or guesthouses in Manaus besides the usual hotel/flight aggregators (Kayak, booking.com, etc.)? I'm open to guesthouses as well.
I visited this morning the Hotel Belíssimo. I'm afraid you are not going to find much online about it. It has 17 rooms avaiable with cable and WiFi. Their rates will be around 150-200 reais during the WC. It fits 2. Again, not really a family hotel. It's in a good location, near the Teatro and near Mônaco Hotel (where many american fans are staying). But it's the kind of place you just want to spend the night. If anyone is interested in booking I'll charge a 10% finders fee since I'm doing all the legwork.
Hi, Is there any lockers in Manaus airport or at the bus station? We are flying in a few hours before the England vs Italy game and back out a few hours later so we are not booking accommodation, but will need somewhere to store our luggage.
Hi - I am having a really hard time finding a place to stay. We are coming to town late on June 11th, arriving at 10pm and planned on staying until June 15th. There are 4 of us and we are attending the Italy v England game. Any hints on hotels/hostels/anything would be massively appreciated? I have been scouring the net for 24 hours now and have had very little success... Ideally we want to stay in Punta Negra...
@Samgud89 As far as I'm concerned, there are no lockers at the airport. Not sure if they'll add them since the airport is being renovated, but I wouldn't hold my breath. I would be glad to pick you up at the airport and keep your bags in my place for a fee. I hate to sound like I'm selling something here, but I feel this is a win-win situation. BTW, I'll be attending the matches as well. @ssurshot It will be tough to find something at Ponta Negra. There are mainly 2 hotels in that area that you can inquire: Hotel Tropical Manaus or Park Suites Manaus. Both should be very expensive. People have booked with sucess the Vieiralves Express - which I can recommend. It's in a good neighborhood, close enough to the stadium.
Anyone still having difficulty finding lodging in Manaus? I'm looking for accommodations the night of 6/18 and 6/22 (will be on jungle excursion in between) and can't manage to find anything reasonable. Hotels are either ridiculously expensive or require a 3 night minimum.
Thanks for the Viervales info Riker, I managed to scoop that today for 3 nights. @xman818 I was seeing some one night hostels on booking.com today. I am kind of in the same situation as you since I need to get a room for one night on the 24th when I get back from the jungle.
Hi, I will be staying at the Millennium Hotel and attending Italy v England. It looks close enough to the stadium to walk. I contacted the hotel about getting to the stadium. They said that there will be no vehicle access within 2km of the stadium. Does anyone know if it will be a safe walk to and from the match? Any comments on the hotel and surrounding area? What is the best way to get to the fanfest from the Millenium? Thank you!
It's quite easy to walk to the stadium from the Millenium Hotel. It will take around 25 minutes. Regarding security, I'm sure you'll be walking with tons of other fans, so there shouldn't be any issues. The hotel stands right next to a mall, which can be handy due to its foodcourt. It's also within walking distance to the Vieiralves Neighborhood, where plenty of bars and restaurants are waiting. The best way to get to the fan fest is probably using taxis. It's a 25 minute drive (on a regular day). You can use buses, but you'll have to be informed which bus to take (I have no idea).
I live in Manaus nowadays. I'd like to share this article about Manaus, it has great tips: http://inbrasil2014.tumblr.com/post/76275051983/manaus-a-snake-preview I'd just disagree regarding the hotels he recommends, as I find them overrated.
Hi Guys We are staying in the Novotel Manaus 12-15 June. it seems to be in the industrial district and pretty far away from everything else. What's it like getting into town and to/from the airport? is there much to do in this area or will we need to get taxis every day? Cheers
Will need taxis to go anywhere. Far from airport, stadium and boat rides. The hotel itself is pretty good, but it's mostly used fo travelers with business within the industrial district.
My group of 4 has firmed up our itinerary for the Cup which includes two separate two-night stays in Manaus. Has anyone else had problems finding hotels that will book for less than 3 nights? On booking.com, I find availability if I plug in a 3-night stay, but nothing at those same hotels when I plug in just 2 of those 3 nights.
Like others, we are a group of 6 that needs a place to stay for 1 night at the end of our Jungle tour, on June 21. Just need one night and we can't find anything. Riker, happy to pay you that finders fee if you can help us out with anything. We are all willing to stay in one room if need be, we just need someplace off the street!
Riker, I was able to find this hostel through hostelbookers.com. http://www.hostelbookers.com/hostels/brazil/manaus/108206/ Can you tell me anything about this location, or if this place even really exists?
I've never heard of it, but it probably exists. Neighbourhood is not touristy at all, but I guess it's fine if it's just for one night.
