Well, tonight was the opening of St. John's new Belson Stadium. To my surprise, I arrived at the ticket gate 30 minutes before kick off to find a SOLD OUT sign (Thank God for connections). LONG pre-game ceremony to open the stadium with fireworks, cheerleaders, and dancers.

Oh yeh, there was a game too. The teams played to an entertaining 1-1 tie with both teams missing game winning chances.

SJU was on the board in the 14th on a goal by Andre Schmid following a mis-played ball from a Wake defender. Wake equalized in the 2nd half on a goal by Vicente Bastidas.

“This field will give our student-athletes a quality field to play on, and the closeness of the field to the stands will make our supporters feel like they’re part of the game.” If you want to know how close the fans are ask the Wake netminder who had the SJU student section following him around the stadium. I really felt for Willie-Willie-Willie.

For those who have previously discussed Justin Moose, this kid is everything as advertised. 110th minute he was still playing at 110%.

All in all, a great night of soccer in NYC that could have only been made better by a golden goal win.

  2. I was one of the crazies taunting ol Willy. He had a mophead...haha. The stands are REAL close...like the back of the goal is less then a yard from the fence=) Even better..I hear Willy's mama was sittin by where we "migrated" to in the 2nd OT. She had a first hand vision of what we were doin.

It was a shame we only tied it. Over 20 shots...and about 4 on goal. How sad. Wait until thurs nites game against Notre Dame...it should be real decent. That was my first college soccer game in like 10 years.,...and I was slightly disappointed by the sloppiness and how many touches the players took when they should have been one timing the ball. But oh well...gotta root for the Johnnies...

    PS...does anyone know the Notre Dame's GK's name?=)

Chris Sawyer, and he's very good: Soccer America's All-Freshman team last year, All-PDL second team this summer and Pre-Season All Big East this fall.

    Question

I'm assuming this new stadium has a grass field and not artificial turf?

    Re: Question

Yes, grass. This has been promised to recruits for five years or so now and it's finally here. The other plus of this field is that now they can host NCAA Tournament games.

Actually, it's Field Turf. Closer to grass than astroturf, but still not natural grass.

In my opinion it actually plays better than natural grass.

  7. Similar to the stuff at Cardinal Stadium where the beloved FIRE play.

FieldTurf plays far better than Astoturf but pales in comparison to a well manicured natural grass surface.

    Field Turf

Is is the "plastic" grass that has the rubber and sand mixture? A lot of schools are using this now for American football, but haven't heard it used for soccer.

If anyone's interested in some information about the turf, it can be found at http://www.fieldturf.com/index.htm

Tom, I'd love to agree with you, but I can't remember EVER playing on a "well manicured natural grass surface". The true roll of the balls being played during this game was a thing of beauty. It was like the ball was floating along the surface.

Just an opinion, and we know what those are like!

You heckled a goalie? Wow. Way to break new ground. We've been doing it for years, and it isn't a big deal, unless you suck at it, which most people do.

I had a goalie's father threaten to kill me once. Not proud. Just happened.

Let the Big East smack begin.

    Tiger1,

You are correct of course regarding the few and far between "well manicured natural grass surfaces".

Needless to say they do exist and they are an absolute thing of beauty! Speaking of beautiful natural grass surfaces I will be going to Saint Louis U this evening to watch the SLU vs UNC Charlotte Match and the SLU surface is magnificent! Earlier this season the field @ Hermann Stadium was suffering from the harsh St. Louis summer but it is responding quite well to the fall growing season. What a beautiful site to a soccer fan than looking at a smooth grass field just before kick-off!

Go here to see a picture of Robert R. Hermann Stadium and learn more about the finest NCAA Soccer facility in the country!

    Re: Field Turf

    Yeah that is the stuff.

I feel sorry for keepers on a new FieldTurf surface when they slide or dive thousands of those nasty black rubber pellets spray up into their faces invading evey facial orifice! I feel sorry for these keepers and field players as well!
