Couldn't stay healthy and wasn't well integrated with the team. In his only 2006 national team appearance prior to the World Cup, he'd gone off hurt. Now that's an under-statement. Even so, Ramos wasn't close to 100%, and he pretty much stunk. (Was Wynalda carrying an injury, too?)
It was hope of the fans, hype on Big Soccer and sidefootsitter's hatred of Bob Bradley that made the CD9 issue so big (and add to that Robbie Finley as a replacement).
All of them were in camp prior to the WC. It was there for them to take the spot from Holden. They failed to do so.
If memory serves me right, he got hurt prior to the WC but wasn't fully recovered but was selected anyway.
Has ever been a tournament that Reyna wouldn't been injured ahead of? Looks like his standard modus operandi.
Why? He never gives a straight answer He'd probably say MLS is far better, then our next starting XI would include Spector, Ream, Lichaj, Seb Hines, Brek Shea and Danny Williams over MLS guys
He missed the last two months of the epl season with a leg injury.Had looked to be on the downside before then w/ no speed left.
Actually, I looked back at this and clearly I was totally wrong. Reyna pulled his hamstring in the 11th minute of the first send off game on May 23 and had to miss both the May 26 and May 28 send off games. He played the entire game against the Czech Republic on June 12, and played well in fact, but we WAS injured just prior to the Cup.
Then he was pole-axed by some Ghanaian thug in the 22nd minute. Sprained his MCL that play. Horrible miss by the ref. I think the problem was that the linesman on that side was in the defensive half on that play.
For me it's any opponent that I don't like. It can fluctuate from game to game and hour to hour even.
Reyna never played more than 30 games for his club in any given season. The high point was Rangers in 99-00 when he hit 29 appearances. Even in the season before the World Cup he hit 22 with City*, which was the 5th highest total of games he'd played in a season in his career. * You just know in ten years or so some naive posters/fans are going to be talking about how Reyna used to play for the giants of Manchester City.
Not sure what the Ghanaian player did wrong on that play that you can call 'pole-axed' or 'thug'? see 19 second mark of clip.
I would imagine he is referring to the fact that as the Ghana player had his foot 50/50 on the other side of the ball from Reyna, he also smashed into his knee, effectively rendering him immobile. I have never really blamed Reyna for the actual mechanics of the turnover, only for putting himself in the situation by hesitating in the first place. Edit: Oh crap, I just now saw the Bungadiri post. Sorry.
Thanks for the refresher. My recollection of the play suits my narrative of the loss better, so I'm just going to ignore the cold harsh facts.
