http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...pton-accuse-referee-abusing-Adam-Lallana.html EPL refs just can't win no matter what they do.
Oh man, the daily fail. Highest standards of journalism anywhere. Also, given what players call referees I think it's a little bit unfair to castigate a referee for responding in kind. What do people think of the non-call on the Alcaraz handling though? To me I'd call that self-defense and play on, but I can also see the case for 'arm in an unnatural position => deliberate handling'. (Also with the direction Alcaraz was facing and the position of Clattenburg/his ARs, pretty much none of them would have a clear view of it - but with the direction/slow speed the ball rebounded they'd have to know it didn't hit his chest.)
Clattenburg is probably my favorite ref in the premiership right now, but he's definitely an odd guy, especially the time he was sponsored by a hair restoration treatment product: http://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2011/may/05/mark-clattenburg-premier-league-referee-hair
The details are hysterical: I'm sure all communication from Southampton's players toward referees is always more benign than this and that the club's players never say anything that rises to the level of "insult."
Actually on a scale of 1-10, (10 highest), that's an 11 for a put down. Those who saw the match will recognize that Lallana acted rather foolishly on at least two occasions, but since he is a "player" his actions aren't reportable. I have never been the biggest fan of Clattenburg (aside to PH...just slightly below Collina), but he is a really good referee, and I would rather he take charge of the big match now in England instead of Howard Webb.
Ermmm. Is the rank hypocrisy not lost on anyone else but me? So this is THE bar that players wish us to hold THEM to? Sure, that works for me. (but won't see any games finishing 11v11....)
Southampton are probably starting to regret their decision to be so open about this whole saga now, given the ridicule they're facing from all corners about getting so het up by such a harmless comment.
Really? Wow. If that's what got them so wound up it's a good thing none of them have a badge and a whistle. Good lord.
At what point does Clattenberg need to wear a recording device? Two accusations in two years? With two different clubs? No pattern here..
Well this Lallana thing is barely an accusation. Assuming he said it, if Lallana disagreed with the statement all he has to do is to say so (and then conduct himself on the field accordingly)
But what he is "accused" of saying this time is hardly abusive or problematic. Anyone know if the comm systems they use are voice activated so that the ARs/4th will hear what he says?
News just in, a ref has been sanctioned for making a play on advantage signal in a game yesterday. According to the complaint, a player from red team obstructed a player from blue team while blue was attacking. The blue player managed to keep a hold of the ball and continued with the attack. The ref perhaps sensing that some players might expect a whistle for the obvious infringement, proceeded to raise both arms up together with palms up, while running in the direction blue was attacking. The defending team (red) accused the ref of favoring the blue team. The ref has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
Reminds me a little of a tournament I did in Florida. Black team v White team (uniforms I mean). A player of African ethinicity from the black team, recklessly tackled a caucasian girl from the white team. When the coach, also of African decent, inquired about the card, the referee replied, "the black girl tackled the white girl recklessly" (referring their uniforms, of course). The black team filed a complaint of racial bias against the referee. It wasn't me, thank god.
I read this or a similar post online some time ago and it has stuck with me. Seems many clubs are going with black and white uniforms so it is common to get white uniforms playing black uniforms. I have (sadly) consciously changed to saying the player in white (or #xx white) and the player in black (#xx black). Saying a Caucasian person is white or an African American person is black to me is not at all racist but in today's climate it is best to avoid (try to anyway) any situation that will be used against you like this.
Although I know it's all in how some takes it, according to a variety of press sources (including a Gallup poll) either term is acceptable and neither would be considered racist.
level of journalism matches the level of the charge in question. a WTF charge results in (Seriously???) journalism......
the guy just ran 70 yards on a dead sprint and now has to run back the other way. he is probably thinking "useless SOB! Now I have to run back the other way! Crap!" If you have ever sprinted more than ten yards one way and then have to stop on a dime and go back the other then you can perfectly understand his reaction!
