Pre-MLS. Both Kevin and Jason were there in 95. Jason, of course, went to Duke down the street. He had a couple of stints with the Raleigh. Zavagnin and Berhalter went to UNC. Berhalter, Lagerway, and Kreis overlapped a little earlier than that. 93? Zavagnin was somewhere in there from 93 to 95.
Brian Haynes from the Silverbacks was released, heard a lot of good things about him, no idea if he's on any short lists or not.
update: We talked to Brian today. ATL chose not to renew his deal, and while he has talked to Clavijo he has not been to Dallas for an official interview.
Did he say why they didn't renew? Seems a bit odd as he took their team to the finals of that league.
No, but I think it was personnel related. He didn't seem very torn up about it. In other news: FC Dallas makes some roster moves (w/out a head coach, btw)
I could have sworn that a couple of years ago Colorado went to the draft without having officially announced Pareja. But when I tried to look it up to confirm, I found a start date for him earlier than the draft. Does anyone else remember a coachless team at a recent draft? I really feel like it happened.
Colorado announced Pareja the day before (2 days?) the draft. Essentially he left the press conference and he and Bravo went to the airport to fly to the site of the draft.
and if anyone would like a preview of the FCD 2014 season, look back at Oscar's first - when he was brought in late and had a roster that had largely been decided for him. 7th, West (11-19-4)/ Did not qualify for playoffs / lost in USOC4th Round
This entire thing is starting to take on a feel of Dan Hunt's going all-in on getting Oscar Pareja out of Colorado somehow, and not really having a good Plan B when the Kroenkes shut that down.
What was their record the year before? He's turned them around in year two and they have some good young talent. Another draft like last year and another couple foreign additions and they will be tough. FCD with a new coach might well struggle next year and might have had they hired Pep Guardiola. It usually takes a while to integrate new players and schemes. If Dallas hires a coach who likes passing and possession the whole team will be in shock for a while.
We can have a completely piece of shit season in 2014 if it means we're actually working toward a style and creating a lasting team.
About 5 years ago, I was asked repeatedly to stop posting doubt the "Cycle of Suck". We were caught in a loop in which after Dir was releaved of duties, we would hire a coach, torch the roster, and go into rebuilding mode. When we did not do well, we would hire another coach, torch the roster, and go into rebuilding mode. and on and on. The new hire, needs to be able to be a fit for what we have here. He must be able to create a cohesive possession oriented team with a couple of key players, (@ least 2 to 3 impact midfielders). He must be able to tap into our youth. If he can't get things heated up pretty quickly, he must go and be replaced before the all-star break by someone who can. If the years have taught us something, it is that the coach will eventually be fired. But, the team remains. You can always revamp an existing team with a new coach. However, you cannot simply throw a new team together and expect success. I think that the true power broker in this system will be the behind the scenes Technical Director. Given those types of realities, I think that Ferruzi will probably be given his chance. I also think that we should be grooming several eventual coaching heirs for the day that a new one is needed.
Well Kreis left RSL for NYC today. Also lost CJ Brown to Chicago Fire, so Dallas better get their order in for an RSL assistant coach pronto. They are moving fast.
I'm really not interested in an RSL assistant coach. They're the most overrated team in the league. They're good, sure, but not as good as the hype. If the thinking is that we want a coach who's been to a couple of MLS Cups, why not try to get Sarachan or Onalfo out of LA? They'd have even more experience than Kreis's subordinates. I'm not advocating this, I'm just saying I don't really get the RSL love.
I would comment, but thats trolling. I am sure RSL would like to keep some of their mediocre coaching staff, so feel free not to sign him. Do you really think Hunt's been waiting on Kreis or Cassar? Or just Pareja?
Got another contender? Nobody thinks Seattle is good except Seattle fans, so they're not overrated. LA is no doubt overrated, especially since they didn't win this year and never seemed to gel, but if you don't think they'll be back in the hunt next year you're crazy. RSL, though, I wouldn't bet the farm on. If they were to miss the playoffs next year I'd barely blink. They go on scoreless streaks, they lose big games... so RSL is my pick for most overrated. What's yours? And my question still stands. If we're waiting for an RSL guy, why wouldn't we do just as well or better to pry away an Arena assistant? I'm thinking the only reason there isn't a push for that among the fans is because coaches who have had their shots with the top job already, like Onalfo and Sarachan, are less exciting than unknown quantities who MIGHT be awesome.
But yet they make it to finals and their in the playoffs 6 years running on a tight budget while losing several starters. But yeah, way over rated, you don't want them.
