100%. These stadiums were often economic revitalization projects in poorer areas. Also, any game day will be a local holiday so there will be less traffic to get to games along with above average public transit options.
By the way, a local holiday in a game day is one of those bizarre things you will be able to see just in a 3rd World country like Brazil. A lot has been said about World Cup being a good thing for the people, once it would be the golden opportunity to build better urban infrastructure, smarter bus line redistribution (in a huge city like SP, it´s a must), to revitalize poorer areas, as @ACGreen said. But, in the end, what have politicians done? Avenues? New subway lines? No, holidays. I can only imagine what strangers, like @ACGreen, who are making their lives here think every time they read all the semantic engineering brazilian politicians use to try to explain all this daily bullshit.
Not really too bothered whether my murder goes unsolved or not.............I think I would rather avoid dying in the first place
Kind of related, no? Murders go unsolved when there are too many for the police to handle. And completing the cycle, having a minimal chance of being caught removes a powerful disincentive to capping you for your iphone. I guess what we are looking for is the poor schlub murdered right before you are assaulted to have HIS murder solved. I feel better now.
El Bigote - I'm looking in to Porto Galinhas too for similar reasons or at least because I can't find many hotels in Recife that look like a good bet. Question for you: have you booked internal flights up to Recife yet or are you waiting until January when there are supposed to be more flights available? I looked at Azul last night and return flights to Rio are around $1500!! Also do you have tickets to any of the Natal games around that time? The games times on 6/19 and 6/20 (Natal and Recife) and then 6/23 and 6/24 (Recife and Natal) are not very conducive for traveling between the cities, i.e. evening game followed by a lunchtime game. It's annoying, as being so close to two venue cities was the attraction of going to this area. If you have tickets to those games, have you looked in to travel between the two cities?
Azul is NOT a good company to fly between Rio and Recife. I don't think they even have direct flights between these places. Gol, Avianca and TAM all have and the prices are way lower. I think it's a good idea to always look for prices in a Brazilian aggregator, like http://www.decolar.com/ or http://www.submarinoviagens.com.br/, choose your flight, and then buy it directly in the airline website.
I don't have plans to fly internally. There are flights directly to Recife from Miami, and I only plan on staying put for the time I'm there- game days in Recife and off days watching games at a beach-side bar in Porto de Galinhas.
Funny how the young people freak out and jump, older people sit there with a WTF look on their faces!
hey everyone i am going to watch 2 football games in recife and am staying in olinda do you know anything about it? well i know that it's a somewhat touristic collonial town so i assume since it's smaller it should be rather save? i assume that it's probably a calmer place but i figured you will get to see enthusiastic brazilians about everywhere during the worldcup and if we want to go out there once in a while there is still recife and you can take a cab back? i also wonder if i want to have a beachday would it be a good idea to head a bit north or is boa viagem better for that? oh and last or not least do you think it's smarter to take a bus or a cab between olinda and recife during day time? although that won't be an every day thing either. sorry i ask way too much am just quite excited glad for anyone that can give me any tipps =)
LOL, I think the older ones get the prank and they look a bit pissed. The young people have no idea what it is
The FIFA Fan Fest area is at a plaza called Marco Zero. It is right on the water on an urban island. Check it our on Google Maps. https://maps.google.com/maps?q=prac...F-8&ei=xS2QUum0L4mxrQGew4G4Cg&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAg It is north of Boa Viagem and south of Olinda. It looks like a very simple cab ride from Olinda. This of course, is where people can gather to watch matches in a large public setting. (I would love to see Brazil play there) http://www.recifeguide.com/beaches/ This site will tell you all about the beaches in and around Recife. Information is divided into sections about Boa Viagem, beaches north of Recife, and beaches south of Recife. It all looks awesome. See you there, brother!
I don't know if that has been done yet, but I'm trying to start a collaborative map for the WC. I've already add stadiums and airports, might add bus stations and routes later. Anyone who wants to add something is invited. https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=zhw7-X41iXYU.kXtfxisudJr4
Hey black diamond remember I said I wanted to go to southern brazil when I go to the World Cup but you said it was too European you think I should stick to rio? What about northern brazil like fortazela...
It's been a long time I don't post here, but... I am currently living in São Paulo in a small one bedroom apartment. It's a pretty cozy place and there's a good living room with a convertible bed couch. I also happen to have one extra mattress. So, I can easily host up to 2/3 people here for some days. It would be nice to have people here. I can also take the guests to a tour around the city and all... I used to do that as a couchsurfing hobby, but it would be nice to have people for the World Cup. If anyone is interested, contact me... I can skype/videochat to reassure I am not a kidnapper. Lol. Cheers.
Rio and Northeastern cities are always a good choice if you want to live a truly brazilian experience.
Anyone familiar with Canoa Quebrada near Fortaleza? Is it worth staying out there for a few days or is it more of a one day trip? I have a game in Fortaleza (#29) and can't decide if the remaining two days I have to spend in Fortaleza or Canoa Quebrada (if it's worth more than a one day trip).
I have mixed feelings regarding Canoa Quebrada. It's definitely a beautiful and lively place, but I was a little disgusted by the ammount of underage prostitution going on there, even in broad daylight. Well, I guess that kind of thing is also rampant in Fortaleza as well, so if you're going to be around Fortaleza area you will witness this kind of thing one way or another. I guess you can stay in Canoa Quebrada up to two/three days with no problem. Get yourself one of those ATVs and go for a ride around the dunes. It's awesome.
Yeah, I've read about the prostitution and it's unfortunate that it goes on. The ATV's do look like a lot of fun and will certainly give it a try if we decide to stay in that area. Thanks for the input.
