Nice! Hopefully we can sell this out with the help of Quakes/Niners fans who want to see the new home!
Nicely done by the FO. That's a bit of a coup to be fair, we'll draw in a lot of first timer fans that will hopefully follow us back to Buck Shaw for the rest of the season and beyond...
Exciting. The opening of the stadium will be big news and a probable sell out as the Bay Area is notorious for bandwagoning for special events. And to think, we'll get to go with our pair of $14 tickets, hobknobing with stadium SBL holders. Yeah Quakes FO for this one. Any tips on free parking?
Cool. Waiting to see the reaction from American football fans were don't want the opening of their stadium "soiled" by soccer. :--)
Wow. If it sells out, and I can only assume it will, there'll be 68,500 people on hand for that game. This will be huge for MLS. Also, yes, I'm guessing Niners fans who paid through the nose for their season tickets + personal seat licenses are fuming right now.
Seahawks Stadium was opened by USL-1 Seattle Sounders, and before that the Kingdome was opened by the NASL Sounders, so, there is a precedent.
So when this happens, by my count that will make eight stadiums between San Jose and San Francisco that have hosted an MLS-era Quakes competitive (i.e, league or US Open Cup) match. 1. Spartan Stadium 2. Buck Shaw 3. AT&T Park (Hosted Houston in league play last year, among other games) 4. Stanford Stadium pre-renovation (1996 double-header w/USWNT, I believe) 5. Stanford Stadium post-renovation (4th of July games the past two years) 6. Negoesco Stadium, USF (Open Cup game vs. LA Galaxy in about 2004?) 7. Candlestick Park (didn't they have another double-header there with some Euro club teams a few years back?) 8. Levi's Stadium Am I right?
You forgot Oakland Alameda County Coliseum (or whatever it's called since Howard Cosell passed away.) And Kezar. (Open Cup game vs. Seattle in 2012).
I also remember traveling to some obscure stadium in central cal for a CCL match against a South American opponent.
That was 1999. If you're including single US Open Cup games, we played one at Stanford's Cagan Stadium last year. There was a game in Sacramento at some point. It was either 2002 against Olimpia of Honduras, or 2003 against Municipal of Guatemala. The game was in a high school stadium or something. Here's an article that says it was March 16, 2002 at "Sheldon Florin Community Stadium" in Sacramento.
Beep yeah! Will plan to take light rail and will be able to check out the new stadium. Should be rocking. After a poor season, good job front office...
In addition, Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia was opened in 2003 by a Manchester United-Barcelona game.
Just to amplify. The 1998 Quakes played their first three home matches at Stanford while Spartan was being renovated for the 1999 WWC, which is when that doubleheader occurred. The USOC match vs. LA at USF was in 2001. There were two USOC matches at Cagan last year vs. Fort Lauderdale and Minnesota.
It's actually pretty standard practice for teams to open stadiums with trial run events like this before their main tenant's opening day.
