12 minutes into the match and NIU is already down 0-2 at WVU......Correction ! 4 minutes later it's 3-0 !
Marquette goes on the road and beats Villanova 1-0 in OT on a goal by See Period Nortey. The Eagles improve to 6-3-1 and perhaps more importantly, 2-0-0 in the Big East. Villanova is 4-6-1, 0-2-0.
In the Ivy League, Princeton comes from a goal down to beat Dartmouth 2-1 and give the Green their first loss of the season. Elsewhere, Evansville had a 5-game winning streak, which included beating Saint Louis and Butler. Key word there was had as their winning streak came to a screeching halt when they lost their MVC opener to Drake, 4-1. Drake's Thomas Schermoly had a hat-trick. A 6-3 Jr. from the KC area, Schermoly hadn't scored since he scored 3 goals as a freshman. College sports. Go figure. Drake is now 5-3-2, Evansville 6-3-1. The one positive for Drake was their goal was assisted by Soph. Faik Hajderovic, his 11th helper of the season, which leads D-I.
At halftime, Notre Dame leads Clemson 1-0 on a goal by Harrison Shipp, who pounced on a mental lapse by Clemson.
Akron now down 0-2 (FINAL) at Hartwick, guess they couldn't score "Zip" today. WVU might be the new King of the hill. NIU appears to be done for the year, but there is always the tourney...if you make it.
Ara Amirkhanian, who grew up in Clemson where his father is a professor, scores the tying goal in about the 87th minute and the Tigers are heading to OT with Notre Dame 1-1. The Irish packed things in for most of the second half and it took a really nice strike to beat them.
Hartwick adds one more to beat Akron 2-0. This is a huge win for the small program as they knock off the MAC giant in conference play.
As bad as Hartwick "seemed" to be the last couple of years they have shown flashes of being a dangerous side.
Harrison Shipp scores 2 minutes into OT, collecting a poorly played clearance by Phanuel Kavita, and scoring from the edge of the 18 to keep Notre Dame unbeaten. Notre Dame is 6-0-3, 3-0-2 in the ACC. Clemson is 7-2-1, 2-2-1. Ironic that Kavita made the mistake on the game-winner as he was really solid all game long. He's gonna be a good pro. Also like Ara Amirkhanian even without the goal. He's crafty and Manolo Sanchez showed some skill. Shipp is small and limited athletically, so I wonder about how he'll do in MLS, but he is skillful, smart and crafty, too. If he can hang physically, he can be a solid player at the next level. Think Mike Magee.
I quite agree. This could be a big step forward for the program under coach John Scott's leadership. The MAC should be fun to watch in the next few weeks.
Providence beats St. John's 1-0. Friars are 7-1-2, 2-0-0 in the Big East. St. John's is 5-4-1, 0-2-1.
So here's a cool result. Mid-week Army didn't know if they'd get to play this weekend... or when their next game would be. But they get to play but go down 2-0 to Boston University. Only to rally with a pair of goals in the 82nd and 87th minutes. Then they won it 2 minutes into the second OT. Army is 7-1-1, 2-0-0 in the Patriot. BU is 3-6-1, 0-2-0.
UMBC rebounds from its first loss, beating Hartwick 2-1 in the conference opener for both. Pete Caringi gets his 10th and Kadeem Dacres his 5th. UMBC is 10-1-0, Hartford 7-2-2. And Elon continues its strong start, beating Appalachian State 1-0 in each team's SoCon opener. James Brace with the goal but ruined the pun by only scoring one. Elon is 9-1-1, App State 2-2-6. (With all those ties, App State should totally play UNC.)
Butler rebounds from a midweek loss, blanking DePaul 2-0. British freshman David Goldsmith with a brace to raise his season total to 9 goals. (National Freshman of the Year?) Butler is 8-2-1, 2-0 in the Big East. DePaul is 4-5-2, 0-1-1. Elsewhere, Connecticut rallies from down 2 goals to tie Central Florida 2-2. UConn outshot UCF 24-7 but only put 7 of them on frame. UConn is 3-2-4 and 0-0-3 in whatever their new conference is called. UCF is 3-4-3, 0-1-1.
Creighton wins 2-0 over Xavier. Game not as close as the score suggests. Creighton still struggling near goal. First goal, Creighton corner headed a couple of times harmlessly, then Barnes just flicked it at goal from the 18 to hit the crossbar - and Miller headed home the rebound. Second goal was a beautiful long range strike (30+ yards, as a guess) into far upper corner by Blandon. CU also had a shot off the crossbar and two possible PKs denied. (Someone who watched online may have a better idea of whether either should have been calked.)
SLU @ VCU Sunday at noon central. Rare in-conference, non-conference game. Both teams needed a game and they weren't scheduled to play each other in conference play.
