One of the year's bigger surprises thus far is Florida Atlantic, which went 2-13-1 last fall and is now 4-0-1 after beating Jacksonville 2-1 last night. Nomadic Jr. forward Ryan Price (formerly of FGCU and Stony Brook) is leading the way with 5 goals and 2 assists.
Eastern Illinois and Green Bay provided one of the strangest box scores of the season, a 4-4 tie where four different players each scored a pair of goals. Green Bay's 6'2 senior Sam Krenzien had a had in all four of his team's goals and is now up to 6 goals and 4 assists for the season.
Was at the game. Still issues on defense, but a healthy Carroll will help that when he returns. Nice to see the UVa offense starting to heat up. There seem to be too many weapons to not get going. Game should not have gone to OT if the referee did not swallow his whistle on 2 different occasions where a UVa player definitely seemed to get fouled in the box. NCSt seem to be a team of thugs as there were many hard fouls -- and blatant plays where no attempt to play the ball were made. One good thing that came out of the game was when the loudmouth guy behind us left in disgust after NCSt went up 2-0. I hope he feels like a fool after seeing the final score.
SLU @ UConn tonight. Should be a good one for 2 teams that are looking to get back on track after a stretch of not playing their best soccer.
I wouldn't call it a tantrum. I'd call it a strong display of emotion, caring! http://presidiosports.com/2013/09/commentary-vom-steeg-has-gotten-results-at-ucsb/
Well that was objective. Nary a mention of the ejections and referee confrontations and arrests and the various other ways he's embarrassed his school, his sport and himself. Don't get me wrong - vom Steeg's been a successful coach and he's raised the bar for college soccer in terms of attendance. But he's also a petulant bully who has done things and set the tone for a program whose players have done things that are a black eye for UCSB and college soccer and you can't praise TVS without acknowledging all that. And most coaches care and have emotion and many of them manage to have success without the antics that vom Steeg brings.
Not really. Looks solid but can't base much off a game in which Valpo only got off 4 four shots, zero until 76' -- and only 1 on frame. So far, the impact players in their first season have been freshman Ray Saari and transfer Byron Knowles-Ramirez. My POV on McGuire will be a comparison with Dominic Cervi... pretty high bar.
If accurate, the article addresses the number of full-rides given to Stanford soccer players. Unlike most D1 programs, I'm pretty confident Stanford is fully funded their 9.9 scholarship limit. Also if he would have stayed, Stanford would have have 20 goal scorers from 3 MLS academies. Seems something one would have expected from UCLA.
Pic of attendance at Cal Poly last night on AD's twitter. Pretty much half of stadium was filled. https://twitter.com/themustangway/status/381272937665273857
USD 1-0 UC Davis Another frustration - Shots - UC Davis 16-8 Shots on Goal - UC Davis 7-2 Corners - UC Davis 10-3 USD scored early in the second half on their one good attack of the game - down the left side, flat cross, one-touch shot that the Davis keeper slapped up but not over the bar. From then on it looked like 9-0-1 formation for USD.
You think I don't acknowledge the bad stuff? I felt sick after the 2010 game vs Cal. Didn't expect such a show of poor sportsmanship and whining from any UCSB program, let alone our most visible and successful one. I was also embarrassed with McGlynn's going bonkers last year when we lost at home to Davis. Created bad press which is the last thing college soccer needs. Fortunately for McGlynn, he's been able to grow as a person and move on past his mistake (afaik)
That's nice to see. If Cal Poly can continue to draw fans consistently vs opponents not named UCSB, then watch out. It will help the program to more wens and NCAA appearances.
nope. I was the sports editor for my high school and junior college newspapers, and also wrote a couple pieces for the Daily Nexus (UCSB student newspaper), but I had nothing to do with that particular article.
I wonder how Akron will perform in the post-Caleb Porter era. He did leave the program in a much better place than when he first came in. Hopefully Akron's future coaches will continue to build on those successes.
As Joe implies, I was pointing out how the article just glossed over or ignored all of the flip-side of the TVS coin, which you can't objectively do when making a fair portrayal of him and his legacy. As a 70s philosopher once said, you take the good, you take the bad...
Halftime in 3 ACC games. Wake 2, Pitt 0. (Should be worse; Men vs. boys in this one.) Notre Dame 1, BC 1 (goals scored 16 seconds apart) Maryland 1, Clemson 0 (just the second goal allowed by the Tigers this season)
Ricky Garbanzo with a goal in the first minute to help Coastal Carolina to a 1-0 win over VCU (both teams stronger than you might think).
UMBC stays undefeated by winning the Baltimore Derby 3-1 while Loyola suffers its first loss of the season. RS-Jr. Gaeton Caltabiano, who is a transfer from Loyola, had a goal and an assist against his former team, as did Kadeem Dacres. Pete Caringi III also scored his 9th of the season.
