LOL, sorry to derail the thread. I'm talking about it in this thread below! https://www.bigsoccer.com/community/...truction-thread.1982121/page-26#post-28680548
NYCFC extends job offer to RSL's Jason Kreis to be first coach. http://soccer.si.com/2013/09/19/new...re-rsls-jason-kreis-to-become-new-head-coach/
This is indeed shocking news I was almost sure that they would go for some Euro coach..... trying to go for an MLS coach is I wager something not many of us expected.
If this is true, coupled with the Reyna signing and the guy from Rutgers signing, I think bodes very well in giving the team their own MLS specific identity with out turning into Man City USA.
At least NYCFC got permission to talk to him, Seattle did the same but they did not seek permission for talks with Sigi.
Its smart to go with an MLS guy but I always thought they would try a world renowned big name coach as opposed to Kreis.
Its smart to go with the proven commodity. Bring in some big name bozo that has no idea how the salary cap works and he'll likely crash and burn. Kreis, armed with the largest salary in MLS, would be a sight to behold.
I agree and I don't think a big name guy will be successful in this league of salary caps and stringent crazy rules.
Not a bad first choice at all.. But from that to actually getting him to sign up, or rather, why would he leave?
Money and a chance to have all the resources he could ever dream of (well MLS style). Still, he has a good thing going in Utah, he is definitely the boss and loved by all out here.
It should be noted that RSL's owner okayed the meeting because he believes he can match any offer NYCFC will propose. And he's moving from a team where he has full control and is the center of everything to a literal blank slate in NY. No team, no logo, no culture, a big budget, but one that has many hands holding the purse strings. Also his family is strongly intrenched in SLC. I doubt he'll go.
If the reports of him being flown out to London are true then I have to think that Kreis is more than interested.
RSL is a fantastic organization but, let's be honest, NYCFC will be a step-up. They'll have bigger names, way more money, way more media coverage. ESPN already shows how many Red Bull games a year? NYCFC is going to be even bigger. Red Bull has how many big names on the team? NYCFC will have more. A job at NYCFC could be bigger than a lot of EPL jobs in a couple of years which would throw open those doors most likely....
Although what you say is true, Kreis is a type A+ personality. His way or the highway. At RSL, he is the indisputable master, no one is above his law, the "team is the star" is his motto, his players look to him as the leader and the fan base absolutely is behind him 110%. The idea of Kreis playing 2nd fiddle in player decisions to Reyna or dealing with me-me-me egos and personality might be things Kreis wants nothing of.
I'm sure NYCFC is aware of all that when they called him. I'm sure their pitch to him will be something like "We want you to develop NYCFC in the same mold as RSL. We will get you whatever you need.". I'm sure they'll tell him that RSL might be able to match them on his salary but can't match them on exposure and players and they'll probably hammer the fact that NYCFC will be an advancement in his career. I think the decision will hinge on how much Kreis believes them and if his family is willing to move. Its going to be a hard decision.
I would be shocked if Kreis doesn't take the job, if offered. What more does he really have to prove in Salt Lake? He has done everything but won CCL there. And he has to know the league is evolving. When he looks at the money LA, Seattle, and Red Bull are spending he has to at least wonder about what he could do with such a budget. And I think the guy is in no danger of harming his career by moving. If he went to NY and they fired him quickly because they didn't see the results they wanted with an expansion team, he would be re-employed very, very quickly. He's in the Arena/Schmid/Kinnear world now. Those guys practically have lifetime employment in front of an MLS bench if they want it. I actually thought NYCFC would target Bob Bradley though, for after World Cup or whenever it is Egypt falls out of contention.
I hate, absolutely hate this kind of reasoning. It makes assumptions that all people are motivated by the same thing. Who says he's coaching Salt Lake to prove anything? There's just so much wrong with this perspective (as a universal - it certainly applies to some people) that I'm not going to bother listing everything.
Most people in professional careers want to reach the highest level they can, sports or not. NYCFC offers more potential and a larger salary. He's done everything at RSL other than win the CCL, so unless he feels particularly attached to Salt Lake or his family don't want to move to NYC, it's almost inevitable he'd be attracted by such a position. In the soccer world very few people turn down moves to bigger clubs aside from family reasons.
I guess I would look at his personality - at least as exhibited from afar throughout his playing and coaching career - and say he seems to be a hyper-competitive guy. My experience with those kinds of people - from my brother to the high school, collegiate, and pro athletes I have met - is that they are often motivated by the idea that they need to prove their worth and their value. Not sure why the idea so offends you.
